The origin of the 2008 bank heist actually was the S & L's heist of the 1980's.
This was a Bush family, CIA and Mafia rigged bank robbery, described by Pete Brewton in his book, The Mafia, CIA and George Bush:
For me the S & L became a dry run. The main players discovered they could get away with outright robbery and so prepared the ground for the biggest bank heist history has ever known.
And they got away with that too.
