Ft McMurrray is the main urban center for the Canadian tar sands employees and infrastructure support. There is a wild fire threatening the entire city due to a dry winter and temperatures in over 30C! This area used to be just trying to melt it's snow about now. Check #ymmfire for updates.

There is so much bitumen in the rock and soil spoils/waste of the open-pit mining there that it too could catch fire - and like some coalmine fires could burn for decades without being able to be put out. It is of course a tragedy for the families loosing everything, but it is almost like Gaia's revenge in burning down the single most destructive area to her atmosphere and environment. Should set back the tar sands business by many years. It is ironic that the damage places like the tar sands have caused on the World are now the cause of its own demise........
