Newt Gingrich: We should 'test' all Muslims in US, and if they 'believe in Sharia,' deport them

Newt Gingrich said Thursday night in the aftermath of the deadly terror attack in France that the US should issue a religious test to Muslims in the country and deport those who are found to believe in Sharia Law.

"Western civilization is in a war," Gingrich said. "We should frankly test every person here who is of a Muslim background, and if they believe in Sharia, they should be deported. Sharia is incompatible with Western civilization. Modern Muslims who have given up Sharia, glad to have them as citizens. Perfectly happy to have them next door."

He added: "Anybody who goes on a website favoring ISIS, or Al Qaeda, or other terrorist groups, that should be a felony, and they should go to jail. Any organization which hosts such a website should be engaged in a felony. It should be closed down immediately."

The First Amendment to the US Constitution protects against "an establishment of religion, prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

Gingrich, who was thought to be one of Donald Trump's top picks for vice president, said he was "sick and tired of being told that the wealthiest, most powerful civilization in history, all of Western civilization, is helpless in the face of a group of medieval barbarians."

I'm not sure where to begin. OK, I concede that the concept of Sharia is fundamentally incompatible with democracy. But so is communism. Shall we bring back McCarthy? Shall we bring back the Tsar and his pogroms?

You might not agree with Islam. But if you think that it's ok to test and deport Muslims for agreeing with their holy book, how far is it from there to being a deportable event for believing in the Bible, or the Torah? Or not believing in anything at all? Legally, those are exactly the same justifications.

Next, how stupid do the Republicans think terrorists are? They can't pass a test? Muslims that are willing to lie about the sincerity of their beliefs are somehow less dangerous than sincere Muslims?

Do you seriously think that "visiting a web site" should be a jailable offense? Billions of people visit web sites every day. The internet, whose existence the US has midwifed and promoted throughout the entire world as an engine of commerce, is now to be feared? Or the free exchange of ideas? You Republicans better be careful if you do bring back McCartyism - you're starting to sound like Mao.

Last, are you sure that you want to promote the idea that America CAN be "helpless in the face of a group of medieval barbarians"? That sounds more like terrorist propaganda than a political statement.

Republicans, having loosed hatred in our society by fear-mongering for the last 15 years, and accidentally bringing Trump to the forefront this moment (apparently hijacking your organization), are now going to double down on the fear and hatred?

Or is this just a desperate shell game to justify changing the party rules to dump Trump?
At least Trump didn't pick the "newt."
