Froomkin doesn't really say, but its a very good question. History tells us desperate times result in extremist Governments.
I've still got a hunch the US may not endure in its current form. There's a bit of secessionist talk coming from Texas. The south never seems happy and the Government is still racing headlong in the opposite direction to the people. I don't think there's much holding the US together except hollow patriotism.
We have to be our own salvation. It is not going to come from the heavens. Charlton Heston is not going to appear as God and tell us what to do. There is no great alpha daddy coming to rescue us and make it all better. Start local and eventually we all join up. It's up to us.

It is nothing new that Texans talk about secession. It's in their DNA,and they are quite proud of thinking this way.In fact,to a great many Texans if you are not so inclined to believe in this, you are not really considered a true Texan Patriot.
As for who will harness the rage?Right now,I'd have to say that Glen Beck has done a fine job of cornering the rage crowd. While Limbaugh grabs the Christian base,Beck has grabbed hold of the Independents and Libertarians. The Democrats as usual disoriented and mumbling.
In the video section I posted a clip from the Colbert show about Beck.Whether you thought the anal exam was funny or not, watch the video just looking at how Beck is using mind control/hypnosis type techniques. This seems to be his first show.Modus Operandi clearly detected.....:driver:
