This is a connection I first learned about in James Ellroy's new novel Blood's A Rover. I looked up Grapevine Tavern and found this interesting story. There were two murders associated with an art burglary that may well have had connections to the MLK plot, either directly or in such a way as to reinforce the racialist red herring.
Interesting read, but requires some patience.

Ellroy deals quite a lot with the Grapevine Tavern in his new work of fiction. I recommend the book. He has done his and others homework.
