Joe McCarthy's Boy Wonder

Bobby Kennedy Was No Hero

By DAVID MACARAY
It's a mystery why John F. Kennedy is still regarded as the family moderatecautious, pragmatic, shrewd and calculatingwhile brother Bobby gets to be portrayed as the impetuous, left-leaning, idealistic humanitarian. It's a mystery because even a cursory examination of history reveals that that wasn't Bobby.

For openers, Bobby Kennedy was about as "leftist" as Douglas MacArthur. In truth, he, like his brother John, was a shrieking anti-Communist. The Kennedys were not only Cold Warriors, they were fairly paranoid about itconfusing progressivism with Bolshevismwhich is why they believed, ludicrously, that Martin Luther King, Jr. was a Communist, and is why they (John as president and Bobby as Attorney General) had King's telephone tapped.

How much of an anti-Communist was Bobby Kennedy? Consider: During the early 1950s Bobby served as an aide to Senator Joseph McCarthy. Yes, that Joseph McCarthy. His witch-hunting senate committee ruined the careers of scores of Americans through the use of smears and innuendo. It's a fact. Bobby ("Don't get mad….get even") Kennedy was Joe McCarthy's boy.

It was only after family patriarch, Joe Kennedy, advised his son to jump off the McCarthy bandwagon (alas, "Tail-Gunner Joe" had become an embarrassment, having degenerated into a clownish, alcoholic demagogue) that Bobby sought a new vocation. It was only after Papa Joe urged him to abandon Commie-hunting and focus on another bogy man that Bobby Kennedy decided to make America's labor unions his next victim.

Obviously, there were many corruption targets to choose from. He could have gone after Wall Street, pharmaceuticals, insurance companies, defense fraud, payola in the record industry, etc., but because Joe Kennedy had no ties, no loyalties, no connections of any kind to the working classindeed, he held the common working man in contemptorganized labor became Bobby's new whipping boy. Best to leave those well-groomed gentlemen in the three-piece suits alone, and go after the guys in the watchmen's caps and mackinaws.

As for Bobby's celebrated social conscience, that's another exaggeration. In his award-winning history of the CIA ("Legacy of Ashes"), Tim Weiner reports that it was Bobby himself who spearheaded the plan to murder Fidel Castro. It was Bobby Kennedy who not only initiated the assassination plot, but whofollowing one ignominious failure after anotherflogged the hare-brained operation to keep it going. After all, he was the president's brother. Who was going to tell him to back off?

All those conspiraciesthe exploding cigars, the LSD-laced coffee, the chemical additives to cause Fidel's beard to fall out (!), bribing trusted Castro associates to poison him, hiring out-of-town Mafia hitmen to murder him outrightthose were all sanctioned by Bobby.

Based on documents released via FOIA (Freedom of Information Act), as well as material gleaned from numerous first-person interviews ("Legacy of Ashes" has 150 pages of notes), Weiner made the case that Bobby Kennedy was obsessed with killing Fidel Castro, that he ate, drank and breathed Castro assassination fantasies.
It's also been documented that Bobby Kennedy bullied Lyndon Johnson into continuing the Vietnam war. According to Doris Kearns Goodwin (in "Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream"), Bobby insisted to LBJ that President Kennedy would have done everything in his power to keep Southeast Asia from falling to the Communists, and that it was therefore incumbent upon Johnson to honor his dead brother's legacy by not abandoning the war. He pressured LBJ to remain in Vietnam, arguing that pulling out would be the act of a coward and traitor.

It was only after the Vietnam war had become toxically unpopular and been deemed unwinnable that Bobby, who was now seeking the 1968 presidential nomination, reversed his position and declared himself America's "peace candidate," harshly criticizing Johnson for his hawkishness. So much for Bobby's principles….and so much for Brother John's "legacy."

While Bobby Kennedy obviously had some good qualities, it's a mistake to regard him as heroicas a combination of Mahatma Gandhi, Cesar Chavez and Che Guevara. Bobby was no hero. He was a hardboiled player. If we insist on making comparisons, he was a combination of Lee Atwater, John Gotti and Henry Kissinger.

He was, was again, is now.

Movement. Evolution. From prick to priest to prophet.

My hero, Robert Francis Kennedy.

I hate these rightwing hit pieces disguised as left wing uncover the beast stories. There are similar ones about JFK - all meant by the propaganda machine to give an unconscious rationale for their murder by the very engine behind the propaganda machine. Neither were perfect, but they were changing - in a direction and to an extent that those fascists who had them killed feared. That is good enough for me. I suggest for JFK you read Douglass' book. Bobby was also changing and underwent a HUGE one on 11/22/63. [Although the decision to kill him too predated that date.]
I'm not sure I'd call this a right wing hit piece. The author is a big time union guy.Didn't Bobby go after the corrupted unions hard? This could explain the guys utter distain for the Kennedys. It's a pretty mean spirited article for sure. :monkeypiss:
Joseph McCarthy
Reexaming the Life and Legacy of America's Most Hated Senator
By ARTHUR HERMAN
Free Press
http://www.nytimes.com/books/first/h/her...arthy.html

Robert Kennedy served McCarthy loyally as assistant counsel for his Subcommittee on Investigations, until a personal quarrel with the chief counsel, Roy Cohn, forced him to quit. But he and Joe remained close, and Joe McCarthy stood as godfather for Bobby and Ethel's first child. One day after McCarthy's censure by the Senate in 1954, Bobby was sailing on the Potomac with a group of reporters. He started defending McCarthy against their criticisms. "Why do you reporters...feel the way you do?" he wanted to know. "OK, Joe's methods may be a little rough, but after all, his goal was to expose Communists in government a worthy goal. So why are you reporters so critical of his methods?" Even after his own conversion to left-to-center liberalism, he refused to disown or even criticize his old boss. "A very complicated character," he would muse to himself years later. Robert Kennedy had seen in America's Grand Inquisitor a man who, for all his glaring faults, had "wanted so desperately to be liked."
John Kennedy's views, on communism and the Soviet threat, were not so different from McCarthy's either. Although a loyal Democrat, Kennedy had also bashed the Truman administration for its dismal China record. One night in February 1952 he heard a speaker at Harvard's Spree Club denounce McCarthy in the same breath as Alger Hiss. Kennedy shot back, "How dare you couple the name of a great American patriot with that of a traitor!" Later he would back the Communist Control Act, a measure that went far beyond anything McCarthy had ever proposed, by virtually outlawing the Communist Party in the United States. During the debate on McCarthy's censure in 1954, while most Democrats lined up against him Kennedy warned that censure might have serious repercussions for "the social fabric of this country." And when the actual censure vote came, John Kennedy carefully contrived to be in the hospital for a back operation, so that he would not have to cast a vote against a man who was wildly popular with not only his father but his Irish and Italian constituents.
Such are two paragraphs of an interpretation by Arthur Herman to counter the unremitting slur of the unionist David Macaray. Herman depicts the Kennedys as patriots, personally loyal to the late senator though well aware of his excesses.

As for Macaray's slandering Robert Kennedy as anti-uniononly if we allow Macaray to conflate Hoffa with unions.

Macaray takes Doris' word for Bobby "bullying" LBJ to fight the Vietnam War? Is he her crack dealer? In the September 18, 1964, phone call by Senator Russell to LBJ listen to the president going on about the Tonkin Gulf incident. He wasn't bullied by Robert KennedyI wouldn't trust Doris to be objective about LBJ.

The overall tone of Macaray is a Saturday Night Special firing cheap shots like Sirhan the good little hypno-doper.

The throwaway cracks about Mahatma Ghandi, Cesar Chavez and Che Guevara versus Lee Atwater, John Gotti and Henry Kissinger? The man can't shoot straight.

McCarthy was godfather to Bobby's first child, and was vindicated by the Venona decrypts. Bobby separated himself from the Cohn businessthere's no call to smear himunless you're a unionist on your hobby horse.

And just who compares Bobby to ANY of the six straw men Macaray throws up?

The man became quite thoughtful, reached out to Chavez, spoke in Indianapolis and likely averted a riot.

And as for that killing Castro nonsense, it smells like Helms to blame it on Bobbybut it came out of Ike and Allen Dulles to Helms to Harvey, not out of John and Bobby.

We'll have enough cartoon crap coming out of the Mardi Gras marriage of Tom Hanks and Vincent Bugliosi, magic thinking in abundance to blame it all on the dead president and the dead scapegoat.
This same topic came up over at the EF.Jim DiEugenio posted a letter that he wrote to the author Dave Macaray. The letter is a great smackdown of this hit piece.I haven't seen Jim here on the forum for awhile,so I'm hoping that he will see this post, and do us all a wonderful favor and post up this letter.
