Federal authorities indicated Thursday that the Secure Communities program helped them to return Joao Brito to the Netherlands Thursday, where the 30-year-old was turned over to Dutch authorities who have been seeking him in connection with child sexual abuse and human smuggling allegations.

According to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Brito, 30, was arrested in May by Boston Police and charged in connection with vandalizing a vehicle. ICE reported Thursday that Suffolk County's Secure Communities program enabled investigators to share fingerprint information following his arrest that produced a match indicating Brito was in the country illegally since his visa expired in September 2008.

While in ICE custody, federal officers were alerted that Brito was under investigation by the Dutch National Police for child exploitation, according to ICE. The federal agency announced Thursday that ICE officers accompanied Brito on a flight from Logan Airport in Boston to Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam, where Brito was turned over to Dutch authorities.
