Who would have given the order for the 1/3 of a division of US combat troops to return from Germany? They were in the air at the time of the assassination.
I don't know the size of an Army Division, but would one-third of a Division be enough to aid in the control of a rioting populace in the large cities of the US?
With National Guard and Police?

Or just Washington, D.C.?

Adele
Adele, one division is made up of at least three brigades with between 10,000 and 20,000 soldiers. Divisions are normally commanded by major generals and so are quite large. Probably enough for a city or four but not for the country.
Magda, how strange. I was thinking this exactly same question just two days ago, as a means of identifying one of the Pentagon conspirators, for whoever gave that command in 1963 -- and it must have been the commanding officer of the Division in question -- there, at least, is one name that can definitely be identified as a conspirator.
Ah, David, great minds think alike!
Yeah, that's what I am trying to work out. Get a better picture of the shadow players and the connections.

I haven't been getting too much out of google on this and thought some one may have already invent this wheel some where. I can get information on the Joint Chiefs of the time but not beyond that. At least with my limited resources and time. I can ask my girl friend whose brother ran one of the US bases in the FDR. Not contemporaneous but he might know. Or at least point me in the right direction.
I have no idea which unit it was that was in the air at the time, but it shouldn't be hard to find out and from there to discover who the commanding officer was on 22 November 1963.

Then check that officer out.

From there one might be able to unpick the connections.
Just a question (?) Would General Edwin Walker, who was to be dismissed by President Kennedy, but resigned first, be somehow once connected to this Army unit from Germany?

Adele
An interesting thought Adele and worth checking out.
