Scheffer: NATO is going to need military presence in
the Arctic

NATO Secretary-General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer insists
on NATO presence in the Arctic region.

An armed conflict in that part of the world can hardly
be expected, Scheffer said on the sidelines of a
security seminar in Reykjavik, but the climatic
conditions are changing and the Arctic ice is melting.

The opening of new transportation routes will require
NATO presence in the Arctic....

Gives new meaning to the term "cold war."
I'd also suggest a strong presence with nukes and bioweapons in Antarctica - hell with the international treaty that makes it illegal! You never know when a group of penguins, polar bears, etc. will become a terrorist cell! At least have the NSA spy on their communications! CIA analysts could easily try to determine if their patterns of nest sites and defecations are a means of covert communication, indicating a planned attack. Anyone having seen Hichcock's The Birds knows what havock penguins could bring to a research station there or via drift ice to our allies in the Falklands and beyond! Danger is everywhere! We must strike first and ask questions later! And in the meantime - GO SHOPPING!:vollkommenauf:
I want to open a financial centre in the Artic where legions of besuited wise guys and friendly bankers can engage in naked short selling without regard to impact or criticism and rake in hundreds of billions each year.

It'll be great.

We can also engage in our favourite stock pumping and dumping strategies, play the central banks of the world on the foreign exchange and money markets, thanks to buying inside information, and manipulate the commodities markets on a daily basis - so the price of oil (for example) leaps to $140 plus a barrel and then back down to under $70 a barre a few months later.

We make bucket loads of money when the price goes up and we make shed loads of money when we force it down again. Same deal with rice and other essential foodstuffs.

Come to think of it though, NY and London have this franchise already...
Some great responses to this nonsense - guys n gals.

Yes indeedy.

And who knows quite what is going to be found in that once frozen ice?

We know there's lots of strange stuff in Antarctica and around the South Pole.

So, the North Pole is also likely to harbour everything from rare resources to Twilight Zone material.

Last time I checked, Thule was way up North.... :listen:
