112 People Arrested Across Europe in Crackdown on Child Porn
The Intel Hub
December 18, 2011
THE HAGUE, NETHERLANDS (BNO NEWS) More than 110 people have been arrested across 22 European countries on suspicion of possessing child pornography, the European Police Office (EUROPOL) announced on Friday. More arrests are expected.
Officials said an investigation into a file-sharing program identified 269 suspects who allegedly possessed and shared child pornography. A total of 189 house searches have been conducted as of Friday, resulting in 112 arrests across 22 European countries.
Europol said the operation targeted those who shared the most extreme forms of video material, which includes babies and toddlers being sexually abused and raped.
"This is the latest major success in over 10 years of Europol supporting law enforcement agencies in Europe in their fight against child sex abuse online," said Rob Wainwright, Director of Europol.
The arrests were made in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Croatia, Norway, and Switzerland.
In Denmark alone, police said it arrested 19 men aged 24 to 55 and seized 59 computers and 2,430 external media such as hard drives, USB sticks, DVDs and other material.
"From just one of the accused Danes we seized a quantity of 29 terabytes of data," said Danish National Police Commissioner Jens Henrik Højbjerg. "It's a tall order to handle for our investigators it can potentially be 9,000 hours of high quality video."
But Højbjerg said its investigators are using automated software which compares the seized material against a police database of previously known child pornography. This allows investigators to concentrate on new images and movies, which may uncover new victims.
The operation, called Operation Icarus', is the first operation to be concluded under the auspices of the new action plan of the COSPOL Internet Related Child Abuse Material Project (CIRCAMP), an initiative by EU police chiefs led by Belgium and funded by the European Commission. Denmark was chosen to lead the operation.
According to investigators, the latest arrests have already uncovered previously unknown networks of pedophiles. "This operation shows how the internet is helping offenders to develop better techniques forsharing images on a global basis and for protecting their identity," Wainwright said.
"The problems involved are becoming harder to police and call for sustained efforts by policy-makers and law enforcement agencies to ensure that society's response remains strong and agile in this area."
Investigations are ongoing and Europol said it expects more arrests in the near future, with a special focus on identifying those who produce child pornography, the suspects and their victims. Among those arrested during Operation Icarus' is at least one person who is suspected of grooming and meeting a young child.
"These children are victims of multiple crimes," said Cecilia Malmström, European Union Commissioner for Home Affairs. "First, when the actual abuse takes place. Then, when it is filmed. And, thereafter, every time the images are posted, circulated or viewed."
In March, Europol announced 184 people had been arrested in what is believed to have been the world's largest online pedophile network. The investigation centered on the Netherlands-based website boylover.net, which attracted more than 70,000 members at its height.
The website operated as a discussion-only forum where people could share their desire about sexual contact with young boys, without committing any specific offence.
However, some members of the website would eventually move to private channels such as e-mail to exchange illegal images and videos of children being abused.

The phrase "child porn" is entirely inappropriate, and I've had standup rows with journalists who've used it.

"Porn" makes it seem vaguely naughty but not necessarily malign. It's the kind of phrase propagandists for sex between adults and children, such as NAMBLA, have sought to use.

Personally, I either use the phrase "child pornography", "images of paedophilia" or, more properly, "images of child abuse".

I agree 100% Jan. Child abuse. Even in the adult pornography industry things are far from just being 'naughty' but very malign indeed. We are no longer talking about 'French postcards' .
No arguments from this corner. And yet it seems pervasive in terms of the news stories and the sheer breadth and depth of the mind-set and its practices. What is the root in psychological, psycho-biological, neurological, psychiatric or other terms?

OK - for starters remember the material on Underwager and Paedika here. This reveals an agenda to "normalize" the activity of adults having sex with children, and of influential forces creating pseudo-scientific edifices which ultimately cover up trauma and horror.

Child abuse is a grossly underinvestigated and underprosecuted crime.

The proportion of police resources devoted to a shoplifter who steals a sandwich, or a four pack of beer, dwarfs the police resources dedicated to bringing organised child abuse rings to justice.

The history of child abuse by religious organs such as the Catholic Church reveals clear collusion between State and Church to silence and marginalize the abused, and protect the abusers.

A lust for abusing children appears to be a routine trait in many powerful figures such as politicians and businessmen. These figures are "squared" (a phrase I use very deliberately) by the provision of children (often street children or orphans) and once the abuse has occurred, these figures are controllable through blackmail threats.

Very senior figures arrived at NATO, the IMF, and the EU after allegations of child abuse surfaced in their home countries. These figures were not prosecuted. Rather they became key apparatchiks in international institutions.

Guaranteed to do Their Master's Bidding.

At the superficial level, the phrase "child porn" is simply part of MSM's move to simplify, sexify and trivialize important issues in the supposed cause of "greater public understanding". However, it is also one of those occasions where language has real resonance and meaning.

Hardcore adult pornography is now routinely viewed by adult males across the world, including MSM editors. The use of the phrase "porn" rather than "pornography" renders it less deviant, more normal - it strokes and reassures the male half of MSM's audience.

Now, if (and it's an important if) adults are genuinely consenting and paid to be filmed having sex, then it's a perfectly legitimate means of making one's way through a material world. I get fucked by multinationals and bankers every hour of every day, and don't get paid a dime for it.....

So, I don't have a particular problem with the shortening of the word "pornography" to "porn" in the adult context.

However, by law and by common sense, children cannot consent to sex, and thus an adult having sex with a child is abusing that child. There is no such thing as "child porn". There is only imagery of child abuse.

If, at the superficial level, the phrase "child porn" represents lazy thinking, at the deeper level it perfectly symbolizes society's refusal to treat child abuse as serious crime requiring robust investigation and draconian punishment.

A low level street drug dealer can make three trivial deals and get a life sentence. A convicted child rapist is routinely allowed back onto the streets and housed in a poor area where children play unsupervized.

The research clearly shows that a child who is raped is a child who is not just physically damaged, but very often psychologically traumatized for the rest of their lives. So much so that, very sadly, some abused children become abusers themselves.

The phrase "child porn" has become part of the dominant culture's deliberate downplaying and suppression of the horrific realities of child abuse.

The whole legal establishment is set ip for the protection of property. Property rights trump human rights time and again.

Indeed, those powerful figures in politics and business have a lust for power and privilege and are routinely blackmailed in order to do the bidding of others. For those that don't personally have a personal fondness for youth they can be set up with an apparently willing and interested adult woman/man who often then with draws to the bathroom momentarily to be substituted by a child all caught on the waiting camera and no explanation possible.

Quote:Now, if (and it's an important if) adults are genuinely consenting and paid to be filmed having sex, then it's a perfectly legitimate means of making one's way through a material world.

I would agree but there is rarely any genuine consent. The relationship is clearly one of gross exploitation. The women are in most cases addicts and poor, unskilled and desperate. They are not in control of their lives in any way and have few choices and are easily manipulated by others. It is an illusion of male consumers and manufacturers of pornography to think that these women actually choose this for them selves and absolves the male consumers for thier role in the abuse of these women. Former performers in the industry that have survived at all will look back and say as much. But the myth of consent continues because it is so very profitable and convenient for it to continue for so many self entitled males. The same disregard for the continued abuse of women enables the abuse of children as well. So while the extremely unlikely possibility of a fully empowered woman who makes a free and informed decision to enter the pornographic industry as a viable form of paid employment above all other options may hypothetically exist it can never exist for children.

Our whole culture is becoming pornified. Male and female sterotypes are more limited than ever. It is so hard to avoid it at all. It used to be that one had to go seeking it in hard to find places. Now it is hard to avoid it. All part of the normailisation process.
Magda - thank you for those highly insightful comments.
I appreciate both the quality and the depth in Jan's and Magda's response (especially Magda's). But little of those responses involved psychological, psycho-biological, neurological, or psychiatric awareness, research or insight; that was the question and the focus of my own slow attempts at learning. What is the societal cure, therapeutic response, health & wellness systems responses and actions, etc.? I do not think the path can be the political one, as the political one has been so contaminated with the disease as to make the situation metastatic.
Is this extract from old post of mine relevant?

"I prefer to look at the wider perspective, the holistic totality of their disrespect for people, humanity, law, spirit and life in their pursuit of unfettered political, financial, militaristic, hegemonic and global control.
 • Teenagers in juvenile detention are the playthings of jailers.
 • Prostitutes and big poker pots are the payoff for corruption.
 • Teen-agers are the playthings of Congressmen.
 • Prisoners held in secret detention are the subject of hellish psychological destruction.
 • Civilians in the Mideast are cluster-bombed, DU'ed, displaced, and killed (the recent estimate is up to a million).
 • Soldiers are left to disability, disease and homelessness.
 • The Constitution is in the shredder, and massive surveillance is underway for purposes of domestic political control.
 • People are rounded up and put in camps, separated from their families and social services.
 • Endless war is on the horizon.
 • The US spends more on the military and intel than the next 20 countires on the list combined.
 • The government is/was complicit in the debilitating business of addictive and destructive street drugs.
 • The government is/was complict in the theft, mismanagement or purposeful doling out to cronies of dollars.
 • That the government is infiltrated with spies, moles, etc ought to be higher on the political agenda.
 • That the foreign policy is driven by a handful of men in league with other foreign entitites is well documented.
 • That the for-profit miltary industrial complex is having a field day in the marketplace at the cost of millions of innocent lives is arguable.
 • That the justifications for thousands of deaths of our neighboirs, friends and family are all lies is irrefutable.
 • That two national elections were stolen is increasingly obvious.
 • That there is and has been no accountability at the Federal level for high crimes and misdemeanors is obvious....."
