Woolwich attack: David Cameron under fire as MI5 terrorism blunders emerge
David Cameron visited MI5 headquarters to thank spies for their work on the Woolwich terror case a day the after murder of Drummer Lee Rigby despite concerns about the failings of security services.
In other developments:
* The family of Drummer Rigby visited the scene of his murder in Woolwich, where both his mother and sister were so overwhelmed by grief that they collapsed on the roadside.
* Theresa May, the Home Secretary, said the attack was not the work of a "lone wolf" as four other men were arrested by police over the weekend in connection with the murder.
* Hate clerics could be barred from appearing on broadcasters such as the BBC under government plans to expand the powers of Ofcom, the watchdog.
* Lord Howard, the former Conservative Home Secretary, suggested Labour and the Tories join forces to push through a "snoopers' charter" against the wishes of the Liberal Democrats.
* Kenyan officials said they arrested one of the suspected killers two years ago with a group of alleged terrorists but British authorities had failed take the matter seriously. [My bolding MH]
On Thursday Mr Cameron announced that the Intelligence and Security Committee would carry out an independent investigation into what the intelligence services knew about the alleged killers.
After visiting the scene of the murder in Woolwich, he then paid a trip to security services headquarters on Millbank. He thanked staff for the work their work on the investigation and other counter-terrorism successes.
However, a senior Westminster source suggested that it was a mistake to go there so soon after the tragedy and amid concerns about potential intelligence failings.
Michael Adebolajo, 28, had been known to the security services and police for a decade and was arrested six years after violent protests by extremists outside the Old Bailey six years ago.
In November 2010 he was arrested in Kenya after being caught trying to travel to Somalia, allegedly to join the terrorist network Al-Shabaab.
Kenyan authorities say they returned him to British intelligence officers, who failed to take their concerns seriously. The second suspected killer, Michael Adebowale, 22, was also known to police and the intelligence services.
One senior Westminster source suggested the visit was a mistake. He said: "I just wonder what he was going to thank them for. While they [the Security Services] did tremendously well during the Olympics 10 months ago a number of pieces of information have come to light since then. The interesting question is how much David Cameron knew about the potential intelligence failings when he went to see them."
A source said Mr Cameron's did not "exonerate" the intelligence agencies during his visit to their headquarters.
The source said: "He wanted to thank them for the work they had done both on that particular operation - there had been a lot of people working around the clock - but also more generally.
"The work that they do is obviously highly secretive but the Prime Minister is one of the few people who gets to see the effects of that work.
"The idea that he was either blaming the security services or exonerating them when an investigation into what happened actually hasn't taken place isn't right."
Mr Cameron today travelled to Ibiza, where he is spending a week long holiday in a privately rented villa with his family.
A Downing Street source said: "He is on a week holiday with his kids. He has some office support with him to remain full update in terms of what's going on at home.
"The primary focus now is the investigation which is going on, which is being led by police and security services not by the governments.
"There was a Cobra on Thursday but there aren't any more scheduled in. He remains in charge of the country."
John Mann, a Labour MP, said: "People expect him to be at his desk leading from the front. It is inappropriate that he is away, it suggests that he thinks he can run the country from a beach in Spain.
"Does anyone think Margaret Thatcher or Tony Blair would disappear at a time like this?"
Nick Clegg, the Deputy Prime Minister, will take a holiday next weekend while Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, has opted for a holiday in Britain over the Bank Holiday.

Thousands have the potential to be turned into Muslim extremists, Home Secretary Theresa May has warned.
She was announcing planned new laws designed to fight terrorism, including banning orders for hate preachers who manage to avoid proscription and new internet controls.
But she faces a battle with Lib Dems over her Communications Data Bill - the Snoopers' Charter - which would allow police and security services to monitor all texts, emails and other internet traffic.
She said: "I have made my view very clear. The law enforcement agencies and the intelligence agencies need access to communications data.
"That is essential to them doing their job."
Former Lib Dem leader Sir Menzies Campbell warned this could lead to "a very substantial intrusion into people's lives".
Mrs May said there was a case for increasing the powers of the media watchdog Ofcom to block extremist messages on the internet and television.
She said: "There is no doubt that people are able to watch things through the internet which can lead to radicalisation."
She added that since 2010 Ofcom had ordered 5,500 items on the internet to be taken down.

Britain's Security Service: More Questions about MI5's Relations with the Woolwich Killers

Questions continue to pile up over the security services' familiarity and contact with the two killers of Drummer Lee Rigby in Woolwich, southeast London.
Rigby was hacked to death on a public high road, near Woolwich army barracks. His killers, Michael Adebolajo and Michael Adebowale, made no attempt to flee the scene, instead talking to members of the public and giving video statements justifying their savage assault as revenge for the killings of Muslims by the British army in Iraq and Afghanistan.
For days the media and political elite sought to deny that their gruesome assault has any connection with British foreign policy. Initially they also denied that the two were known to the security services, portraying them as "clean skins."
This quickly unravelled. It been confirmed that both were under surveillance for yearsin Adebolajo's case, since at least 2005. In addition, at the weekend, the Kenyan authorities finally admitted they had detained Adebolajo in November 2010 as part of a group attempting to cross the border into Somalia to join the Al Qaeda-aligned al-Shabaab.
In a statement, the Kenyan government confirmed his arrest under the name of Michael Olemindis Ndemolajo. He appeared in court and was handed over to British authorities, after which "he seems to have found his way to London. The Kenyan government cannot be held responsible for what happened to him after we handed him to British authorities."
Details of Adebolajo's arrest first came to light in an interview with the BBC's Newsnight programme last week by Adebolajo's close friend, Abu Nusaybah. He reported that Adebolajo had been detained, and physically and sexually tortured in Kenya, before being deported to the UK. He also reported that MI5 had made repeated approaches to Adebolajo on his return, attempting to recruit him to infiltrate jihadist groups in the UK.
In extraordinary development, Nusaybah was arrested by intelligence officers at the studio immediately following his recorded interview, and remains in detention on unspecified charges.
Speaking to ITV news, Nusaybah's account was confirmed by Adebolajo's brother-in-law. Immediately on hearing of his arrest in Kenya, the family "contacted the British government and essentially, they refused to do anything and the Kenyans were saying they were going to kill him, behead him," he said. "We had clear proof that he was being tortured … violently and sexually."
On his return, Adebolajo had changed and become "a lot quieter and quite bitter towards the fact that he wasn't getting any help from anyone," his brother-in-law continued. "They [the British authorities] did the opposite of what they were doing really. If they wanted help [with information on jihadists], surely they would have given him some support first?"
The security services had approached Adebolajo to work for them, his brother-in-law continued. "They obviously asked him would he be a spy for them … You'd expect maybe they'd say Can you tell us about Kenya, can we do anything for you?' But instead you know, they basically pestered him for years, when he was trying to recover from something psychologically damaging."
Allegations that MI5 "pestered" Adebolajo are backed up by the Guardian, which disclosed that he had seen lawyers last year to complain of harassment by the security services.
According to the Independent, however, Britain's security services "sought to recruit" Adebolajo while he was being held by the Kenyan authorities. The Foreign Office would only confirm that he had received "consular assistance … as is normal for British nationals detained."
Adebolajo was held in custody for several days in Mombasa. When he appeared in court he complained of severe mistreatment, including being denied food for days. If the accounts by family members and the Independent are true, it would mean that the British authorities were aware of his abuse and did nothing to stop it. Given allegations that the security services were trying to recruit him, this can only be because they hoped such mistreatment would break him and make him amenable to approaches.
Adebolajo returned to the UK without any reported follow-up investigation, let alone charges, as to his suspected activities in Kenya. This was despite the fact, again according to the Independentciting "Whitehall sources", that Adebolajo "also made a second attempt to travel to Somalia last year but was stopped by MI5 and warned he would be detained once more by the Kenyans."
These accounts refute claims that, despite eight years of surveillance and two occasions in which he had presented himself as someone actively seeking to engage in terrorist-related activities, Adebolajo was considered a "peripheral" figure, or a "non-risk". This claim is made all the more suspect because the ruling elite has continuously cited terrorist activities in Somalia as a major threat, warranting British involvement in the impoverished African country.
It was only on May 7 that Prime Minister David Cameron hosted the second "UK-Somalia Conference" in London, where he warned that Somalia mattered "because when young minds are poisoned by radicalism and they go on to export terrorism and extremism, the security of the whole world is at stake."
As regards Adebowale, Sky News revealed that he had recently been reported to police by a local shopkeeper for "grooming" a 12-year old schoolboy into jihadi politics. The shopkeeper, who spoke anonymously, said that he was told Adebowale "was being monitored by security services and his movements were being monitored."
While the extent of MI5's involvement with the Woolwich killers is concealed, public revulsion generated by the horrible death is being used to further attack civil liberties.
In what amounts to a form of collective punishment, this assault targets Muslimsalthough its broader aim is to undermine the democratic rights of all working people.
Home Secretary Theresa May has set out new measures to prevent the "radicalisation of British Muslims", including "pre-emptive" censorship of the Internet, banning radical Muslim groups even if they disavow terrorism and violence, and a further crackdown on freedom of speech, especially on university campuses.
Exact details have yet to be announced, but indicating the open-ended character of the intended measures, May argued, "There is no doubt that people are able to watch things through the Internet which can lead to radicalisation."
May made clear that she intends to revive the Communications Data Bill, dubbed the "snoopers' charter" because of the wide-ranging powers it seeks to give to police, security services and the authorities to intercept all electronic communications.
The Conservative Party had been forced to retreat from the bill after protests by civil liberty organisations and sections of the Liberal Democrats, with which it is in coalition. But two former Labour home secretaries, Lord Reid and Alan Johnson, have backed the measures, while former Conservative Home Secretary Lord Howard called on Cameron and May to form a bloc with Labour to get the measures through Parliament.

In the wake of this awful butchery, why is there a need to impose a "snooper's charter" giving wide-ranging powers to the police, security services and authorities to intercept all electronic communications - when Adebolajo had been kept under surveillance for 8 years, by the security and intelligence services anyway?
THis entire sordid affair stinks to high heavens in all sorts of ways.

The psyop is working all too well apparently. A reader here linked me to a video in which a British group called Britain Firsters issued a demand from local police to arrest Anjem Choudary for being a "scary Muslim" and inciting all kinds of hate crimes committed against good British folks. They claimed that if local authorities didn't arrest him by yesterday for basically saying stuff, then they would take the law into their own hands and go get the bad guy themselves.
But a funny thing happened on the way to the Kristallnacht. The cops came in and whisked their assets away to a new safe-house and that just completely blew the hive mind of the mooing herd. That's to say nothing of the fact that the Daily Mail published a photo (see below) of the scary fundamentalist Muslim's completely westernized daughters wearing jeans, Nike shoes and carrying Hello Kitty backpacks with their heads and faces exposed (but being hid from the cameras).
This kind of mob justice action is exactly what the powers that be want. It's what happened when neoliberalized countries like Indonesia and India were converted to the "new normal' and it's inevitably going to happen here as well. I've been saying that for years. Citizens got riled up and some torches and pitchforks and they went out to get the evil Muslims and the leftists who didn't support the new normal.
There just happens to be another similar historical event worth mentioning that this Britain Firsters video brings to mind…
Kristallnacht or Night of Broken Glass "… was a pogrom (a series of coordinated attacks) against Jews throughout Nazi Germany and parts of Austria on 910 November 1938, carried out by SA paramilitary and civilians. German authorities looked on without intervening"
In this case though, the authorities intervened on behalf of Michael "Mujahid" Adebolajo's mentor and they swooped in and secured him and rushed him off to an undisclosed location to keep him from the hands of the mob though it is unclear if the mob ever showed up. In fact, they didn't.
Why is it you think that Anjem Choudary can run around saying the most heinous and awful things, calling for violence against all sorts of people, and the authorities in Britain never touched him? Why is it that as soon as a group of townsfolk are ready to pick up their pitchforks and do away with the Jews Muslims, they rush in and whisk him off to a nice new home somewhere safe?

Now if you think that is rather telling, take a look at this. The Daily Mail published a photo of Choudary's family being escorted out of their home by police in order to protect them from the mob that wasn't actually there. Too bad that soldier didn't get as much protection from the guy MI5 had been watching…
But here's the interesting thing, look at how the kids of the fanatical Muslim Choudary are dressed!

Really? The only reason these daughters of the strict Islamist parents have their heads covered up is to keep the paparazzi from getting a clear shot of them. Something tells me that isn't the point of their traditional attire.

There is a very good reason the cops kept you from getting to Anjem Choudary and his westernized daughters… because he's playing a role for British intelligence, just like Michael "Mujahid" Adebolajo was.
You won't get to him either.
But fear not. Your Kristallnacht won't be denied you. There are plenty of Muslims in your community who had nothing to do with any of this and never advocate violence of any kind who you can vent your hatred on and I am sure the cops won't do jack squat to stop you. After all, that's what Kristallnacht and Anjem Choudary are all about. Get it?
Just don't forget who you're emulating. Don't forget the bombings in London and all your fellow countrymen who died protecting Britain from the very thing you are becoming. Don't worry about them turning over in their graves while you goose-step your way to fascism.

The only thing about this is that Muslim women can and do wear what they like at home, including Hello Kitty paraphenalia. It is only when they go out of the home or are in the presence of men not of their family that they may cover themselves. And girls before puberty do not have to be covered at all.
