"He was one of the last kids tocome in, and he sat down and almost immediately started laughing to himself in a way that was just kind of creepy," a classmate, Alex Kotonias, 20, told USA Today.
"As soon as the teacher started going over the syllabus, he had this outburst out of nowhere, didn't even raise his hand, and started asking the teacher some sort of weird questions about whether he believed in mind control."

On June 14, she wrote: "We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon. Everyone interviewed would say, 'Yeah, he was in my math class and he was really weird.' I sit by the door with my purse handy."
In September, college officials sent campus police officers to Loughner's home, where he lives with his parents, with a letter informing him he could not return without a mental health professional's written assurance that hispresence at college would "notpresent a danger to himself or others."
"It was obvious to everyone that Jared wasn't a normal guy,"said neighbor Anthony Woods, 19.
Loughner worked as a volunteer at the Pima Animal Care Center, where he walked dogs and cleaned cages. "He loved animals and was a good worker," said another volunteer.
Loughner had once tried to join the military but was deemed unsuitable, officials said.

FBI investigators delving into the warped mind of the Tucson massacre suspect Jared Loughner are exploring whether he was influenced by the occult and a Right-wing conspiracy theorist.In messages left on the Internet before the shooting, Loughner, 22, revealed himself to be a social outcast with paranoid, nihilistic beliefs and a fixation with grammar.
At a public meeting with Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords three years ago, he asked: "What is government if it doesn't exist?" It left the politician baffled.
According to the Southern Poverty Law Centre, a U.S. civil rights group, Loughner's language and beliefs appeared to resemble those of David Wynn Miller, a Milwaukee-based activist who believes the U.S. government uses grammar to control people's minds.
Miller, 62, a retired welder, has described himself as a plenipotentiary judge, ambassador, banker, genius and King of Hawaii, and invented his own form of grammar called "truth language", that is said to set people free of the government.
He said he was appalled by the shootings, but agreed with Loughner's pre-shooting Internet statement that "the government is implying mind control and brainwash on the people by controlling grammar". Miller told the Milwaukee Journal that Loughner could have visited his website but he didn't know him and he was "obviously disturbed".
FBI agents combing through Loughner's life will also explore whether he was an enthusiast of the occult after a fake skull was found at his home, sitting in a plant pot with shrivelled oranges. It appeared to be some form of shrine.
The skull was concealed outside the home he shares with his parents, Amy and Randy, in a middle-class area. Classmates and neighbours described Loughner as "creepy" and "an emotional cripple" and said he used to ask teachers about mind control.
They said he was an atheist who also believed that NASA space shuttle missions, which have been flown by Miss Giffords's astronaut husband, Mark Kelly, were faked.
Ben McGahee, 28, a professor at Pima Community College, said: "I remember going home and thinking to myself: Is he going to bring a weapon to class?'?"
Lynda Sorenson, 52, a mature student who had an algebra class with Loughner, wrote on email in June: "We have a mentally unstable person in the class that scares the living crap out of me. He is one of those whose picture you see on the news, after he has come into class with an automatic weapon."
Loughner was suspended in September after writing on the Internet that the college was "unconstitutional".
On Monday, one of the people who jumped on Loughner as he tried to reload on Saturday told of the struggle with him. Patricia Maisch, 61, who grabbed his second magazine, said: "The woman next to me was shot and I was expecting to be next. Then two men knocked him over and somebody yelled, Get the gun!' so I knelt up.
"He reached into his pocket and brought out a magazine. A third man came up and grabbed him, he dropped the magazine and I was able to pick it up and secure it. The three men were on him but his legs were flailing so I knelt on his ankles. He didn't look angry, just a dead face, nothing."
Colonel Bill Badger, 74, one of those three men, was grazed by a bullet on the back of his head. "I grabbed him around the throat," the colonel said.

This is the report that Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has been dreading since the tragic event on Saturday January 8.
The sheriff has been editorializing and politicizing the event since he took the podium to report on the incident. His blaming of radio personalities and bloggers is a pre-emptive strike because Mr. Dupnik knows this tragedy lays at his feet and his office. Six people died on his watch and he could have prevented it. He needs to step up and start apologizing to the families of the victims instead of spinning this event to serve his own political agenda.
Jared Loughner, pronounced by the Sheriff as Lock-ner, saying it was the Polish pronunciation. Of course he meant Scott or Irish but that isn't the point. The point is he and his office have had previous contact with the alleged assailant in the past and that is how he knows how to pronounce the name.
Jared Loughner has been making death threats by phone to many people in Pima County including staff of Pima Community College, radio personalities and local bloggers. When Pima County Sheriff's Office was informed, his deputies assured the victims that he was being well managed by the mental health system. It was also suggested that further pressing of charges would be unnecessary and probably cause more problems than it solved as Jared Loughner has a family member that works for Pima County. Amy Loughner is a Natural Resource specialist for the Pima County Parks and Recreation. My sympathies and my heart goes out to her and the rest of Mr. Loughner's family. This tragedy must be tearing them up inside wondering if they had done the right things in trying to manage Jared's obvious mental instability.
Every victim of his threats previously must also be wondering if this tragedy could have been prevented if they had been more aggressive in pursuing charges against Mr. Loughner. Perhaps with a felony conviction he would never have been able to lawfully by the Glock 9mm Model 19 that he used to strike down the lives of six people and decimate 14 more.
This was not an act of politics. This was an act of a mentally disturbed young man hell bent on getting his 15 minutes of infamy. The Pima County Sheriff's Department was aware of his violent nature and they failed to act appropriately. This tragedy leads right back to Sherriff Dupnik and all the spin in the world is not going to change that fact.

It seems like the terms vitriol and vitriolic have been used more in the last 3 days than in the rest of history combined. Perhaps that's an exaggeration but you know the media, once a word catches on it is used repetitively until we're sick of it. Sort of like anti-semetism.
Everyone with a political axe to grind or a propaganda angle to push is trying to make use of the Gabrielle Giffords mass shooting. Blame this one or that, words incite, words can kill. We've heard it all before but this event really gives an opportunity to push the envelope for censorship and more. In the end this is not about quieting the controlled left/right politicians, their media shills and misguided followers. It is about shutting us up ... you and I.
Already there's a call to introduce legislation that would make it a federal crime to use language or symbols that could be perceived as threatening or inciting violence against a federal official or member of Congress.
Just how specific would that law be and who would have the say so on what inciting violence is? Would violence actually have to occur or would this be more in the realm of 'thought crime?'
Would calling Joe Lieberman a traitor, Lindsey Graham a war whore or questioning that a majority of Congress are controlled or blackmailed by AIPAC, Wall Street and the mega-corporations be inciting? How about saying that the entire Congress and many federal officials are complicit in covering up the 9/11 black op? It could be dangerous just talking about how the Congress and federal officials have blood on their hands for allowing the lying wars to continue or how they get on their knees waving tons of money before Israel and supporting the genocide and land theft of Palestine. Words could trigger loons to act and it would be all your fault.
Mostly it's about inciting fear. Fear to speak out. Fear to call those in power the applicable names they so well deserve. Fear to try and expose the criminal activities in government.
It's not about the "in the crosshairs" symbols of Sara Palin. It's about the symbolism of "we" who are dangerous because we ask the questions.

The feds are reportedly probing whether shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner has ties to an anti-Semitic, anti-government hate group that has ads for tea party organizations on its website.
A Department of Homeland Security memo quoted by Fox News says the agency is looking into whether Loughner is "possibly linked" to the fanatical group American Renaissance.
The group promotes views that are "anti-government, anti-immigration, anti-ZOG (Zionist Occupation Government), anti-Semitic," the memo says.
It's not immediately clear that Loughner is actually a member.
Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, the target of Loughner's firing frenzy, is "the first Jewish female elected to such a high position in the U.S. government. She was also opposite the group's ideology when it came to immigration debate," according the memo.
The group's website features what appear to be paid advertisements for tea party versions of the "don't tread on me" flag.
Jared Taylor, editor of American Renaissance, made clear in an interview with Fox News that the group considers itself a think tank of sorts with a conservative circular that's available by subscription.
Asked about the memo, he said, "That is complete nonsense. I have absolutely no idea what DHS is talking about."
He told the cable channel that his group checked subscriber lists for its circular and found no record of Loughner subscribing or attending events.
Mark Potok, director of the Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, described the American Renaissance's journal as a "kind of white-collar, white supremicists outlet, better described as white nationalists" that is read by "pseudo intellectuals" and "academic racists."
He said the group focuses on race and IQ issues, specifically that African Americans are not as intelligent as whites.
The group had a debate about whether they should also concentrate on Jews, but the majority "was not into that," Potok said.
"Jared Taylor is not an anti-Semite," Potok said.

[In spite of how the media spins this tragedy, let's keep the bigger picture in mind.--CB]

January 9, 2011, 10:30 AM PST (Culver City) The shooting yesterday of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D, AZ) which also resulted in the deaths of six people and the wounding of 14 others was more than just a wake up call. My first reaction was that civil unrest in the midst of economic collapse and corruption calling into question the legitimacy and relevance of government had begun. One in seven Americans are now living on food stamps. Unemployment is now near 25% according to some sources which track those who have stopped looking. And the continuing travesty of Mortgagegate is eroding everyone's faith in the rule of law in this country. This nation is seeing poverty rates approach levels unseen in this country for nearly a century. Yesterday I called my old friend former six-term Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney for a reality check. When she first learned of the shooting she had the same reaction as mine which was essentially that "The people have (finally) turned on congress". Her take as well as mine was that House leadership had exactly the same gut-level reaction. These perceptions were confirmed by the very first news reports (saying that Rep. Gifford had died), and that all members of the House should take immediate and increased security precautions.
Even though the situation is still unfolding, and I have heard reports of possibly two other people having been with or connected to the shooter, one message is clear. Congress has been and still is expecting attacks from an increasingly frustrated, impoverished and disenfranchised populace for its abysmal failure to rationally explain and address what is so obviously happening to the American people and the world as a whole.
It may well be that the suspect Jared Lee Loughner will prove to be a highly deranged and unstable individual. That certainly is the way he's being spun, and not without evidence to support it. But it would be folly to automatically assume that his actions occurred in a vacuum somehow uninfluenced by the events of collapse that we see all around us. Fear is everywhere. One other thing is clear. This will have a chilling effect on personal interactions between members of the House and their constituents. "It's going to change", said McKinney.
There will undoubtedly be those who want to go off down blind alleys and after red herrings looking for all kinds of things. Anti-Semitism has already been offered on the altar of public consumption because the Congresswoman is Jewish. The Tea Party and Sarah Palin are being routinely injected into media discussions. We may see some new gun laws but they will not alter the fact that there are already an estimated 250 million firearms and perhaps billions of rounds of ammunition that are in the hands of an increasingly distressed American populace. Conditions are inevitably going to worsen despite Fed Chairman Bernanke's recent proclamation the "The recovery is taking hold". Continued irrationality on the part of the government will produce more irrationality from the people until the time comes when it will not be possible to conveniently categorize would-be assassins and shooters as deranged. Otherwise the government will be in the position of having to label us all as such and by then it won't matter.
Jared Lee Loughner is a young man, from a younger generation less inclined to worry about the labels offered by The Establishment. His generation as with young people all over the world is suffering mightily and will bear the brunt of the wreckage human industrial civilization has left them. He is a member of a generation which looking into its future sees nothing except hopelessness. Make no mistake that as the fallout from this tragic event continues that, and that alone will be the paramount concern for political leaders in this country and around the world.
