Killing Oswald
A film by Shane O'Sullivan
UK 2013 102 MINS
New feature documentary KILLING OSWALD premieres at the Texas Theatre in Dallas this Sunday ahead of UK release
Using archive footage, interviews and dramatic reconstruction, Killing Oswald explores the mystery of how and why John F. Kennedy and Lee Harvey Oswald were assassinated in 1963. We trace Oswald's bizarre transformation from US Marine radar operator in Japan, monitoring U2 spy planes over Russia; to 20-year-old Marxist defector, decamping to Moscow threatening to share military secrets with the KGB; to pro-Castro activist in New Orleans and self-proclaimed patsy in Dallas. We chart his secret life in the months and years leading up to Dealey Plaza, and the troubling intelligence connections that led to the "assassin" being assassinated.
The film features interviews with authors John Newman, Dick Russell, David Kaiser, Joan Mellen and Doug Horne, Cuban exile leader Antonio Veciana and Watergate burglar Eugenio Martinez; alongside rare archive film and audiotapes of Oswald and his alleged CIA handlers George De Mohrenschildt and David Atlee Phillips. Oliver Stone's JFK prompted the release of six million CIA and FBI records related to the assassination a paper trail showing us the complex web of intelligence agencies monitoring Oswald in the months and years before his death.
The film will have its world premiere at the Texas Theatre in Dallas, where Oswald was arrested, on Sunday evening, November 17th ahead of its UK theatrical release five days later. There will be a Skype Q&A with director Shane O'Sullivan (RFK Must Die, Children of the Revolution) on Sunday evening after the screening. A new Shane O'Sullivan movie on Oswald has to be something interesting. Curious there's not a word about it.

Film Review: 'Killing Oswald'
★★★★☆
It's been almost fifty years since the assassination of US President John F. Kennedy on 22 November and already this week we've seen articles, documentaries and fictionalised accounts all offering a different take on the events of that fateful day in Dallas. Shane O'Sullivan's Killing Oswald (2013) is unique in that it focuses solely on the alleged assassin, Lee Harvey Oswald, and his movements prior to the shooting. Despite the seemingly endless desire of the traditional media to paint Oswald as the crazed "lone gunman", those who have examined the case in any great depth agree that he was part of a grander conspiracy.

The inconsistencies and errors of the Warren Commission, set up by President Lyndon B. Johnson to investigate the incident, are glaring and Oswald's association with the CIA, Castro and the Russians are hardly wild theories but instead documented and proven historical facts. Oswald was an American solider with Marxist leanings who defected to Russia, married, then returned to the US were he immediately became involved in Pro-Castro politics. After a failed attempt to defect to Cuba, Oswald allegedly went to work at a school book depository, aimed his rifle out of the sixth floor window and fired at Kennedy's motorcade. He was then found, arrested, interrogated and eventually shot by Mafia stooge Jack Ruby.

For students of the Kennedy case or anyone who has sampled Oliver Stone's much-talked about JFK (1991), rather than offer just another timeline of cold, hard facts, O'Sullivan attempts and succeeds in humanising Oswald by filling in the blanks between events using expert interviews, reconstructions and archive footage. Far from being the mysterious and unhinged assassin, we get a coherent picture of a uniquely intelligent man seemingly spurred into action by a firm belief in left-wing politics. He would have been a remarkable man even if he hadn't have allegedly shot Kennedy, but O'Sullivan goes on to suggests that Oswald was perhaps too remarkable.

It's later put forward that Oswald was influenced, cajoled and motivated by various individuals who may or may not have been part of a larger organisation. It's clearly a complicated case to investigate, but any major attempt to dilute or simplify his documentary would have been detrimental to O'Sullivan's central theories. Such complexity can often put off the more casual viewer and even seasoned conspiracy devotees may lose track of who is who from time to time, but for the most part Killing Oswald is an intricate and mesmerising tale that even its abrupt and slightly unsatisfying ending can't come close to diminishing.

Hmm, I'll reserve judgment since I haven't seen it, however the Oswald as a firm leftist doesn't go right to the set-up enough for my tastes. In my opinion what needs to be made is an Oliver Stone-type movie that takes the risk and does a straight narrative of Oswald being a CIA operative who was then set-up and betrayed in a Northwoods-type plan. Throw everything into it like the doubles, Douglass perspective etc - the works. The public needs to be jarred away from the official version of Oswald by being shown the truth. Once they understand what Oswald really was the whole thing falls into place.
