I Worked In Reagan's EPA. Trump Hasn't Learned The Lessons Of Those Years Yet

Ellen Spitalnik Environmental consultant 02/03/2017
.........
A month into my job as a lawyer at EPA, in November 1980, Ronald Reagan won the presidential election. My colleagues, environmental law recruits like me, drowned our disbelief in reruns of the 1951 comedy, "Bedtime for Bonzo," starring Reagan. With mixed feelings of arrogance and dismay, we wondered how a former actor and conservative governor of California could be elected president.

Reagan appointed Anne Gorsuch the late mother of Neil Gorsuch, Donald Trump's nominee to the Supreme Court as EPA administrator, and picked James Watt to run the Department of Interior (DOI). Under these far-right leaders, federal government scientists were coerced to change their opinions or just ignored; federal laws protecting the environment and natural resources were disregarded; and Congress and federal prosecutors investigated EPA leadership for a scandal involving misuse of cleanup funds.....

After removing the regime of Mohammad Mosaddeq (which was originally focused on nationalizing Iran's oil industry but also set out to weaken the Shah's power) from power on 19 August 1953, in a coup, the monarch, Mohammad Reza Shah, established an intelligence service with police powers. The Shah's goal was[SUP][6][/SUP] to strengthen his regime by placing political opponents under surveillance and repressing dissident movements. According to Encyclopædia Iranica:
A U.S. Army colonel working for the CIA was sent to Persia in September 1953 to work with General Teymur Bakhtiar, who was appointed military governor of Tehran in December 1953 and immediately began to assemble the nucleus of a new intelligence organization. The U.S. Army colonel worked closely with Bakhtīār and his subordinates, commanding the new intelligence organization and training its members in basic intelligence techniques, such as surveillance and interrogation methods, the use of intelligence networks, and organizational security. This organization was the first modern, effective intelligence service to operate in Persia. Its main achievement occurred in September 1954, when it discovered and destroyed a large communist Tudeh Party network that had been established in the Persian armed forces[SUP][7][/SUP][SUP][8][/SUP]
In March 1955, the Army colonel was "replaced with a more permanent team of five career CIA officers, including specialists in covert operations, intelligence analysis, and counterintelligence, including Major General Herbert Norman Schwarzkopf who "trained virtually all of the first generation of SAVAK personnel." In 1956 this agency was reorganized and given the name Sazeman-e Ettela'at va Amniyat-e Keshvar (SAVAK).[SUP][8][/SUP] These in turn were replaced by SAVAK's own instructors in 1965.[SUP][9][/SUP][SUP][10][/SUP]
SAVAK had the power to censor the media, screen applicants for government jobs, "and according to reliable Western source,[SUP][11][/SUP] use all means necessary, including torture, to hunt down dissidents".[SUP][12][/SUP] After 1963, the Shah expanded his security organizations, including SAVAK, which grew to over 5,300 full-time agents and a large but unknown number of part-time informers.[SUP][12][/SUP]

February 2 President Trump continued his bellicose posture toward Iran on Thursday, reiterating in a series of tweets his administration's warning that Iran has been "put on notice" for its recent ballistic missile launch.
"Iran has been formally PUT ON NOTICE for firing a ballistic missile," Trump wrote in a tweet shortly after 6:30 a.m. Thursday. "Should have been thankful for the terrible deal the U.S. made with them!"

In a follow-up tweet, Trump assailed former president Barack Obama for backing the nuclear deal with Iran, claiming the sanctions relief helped Iran as its economy was being squeezed by international pressures and isolation.
"Iran was on its last legs and ready to collapse until the U.S. came along and gave it a life-line in the form of the Iran Deal: $150 billion," Trump wrote. (In fact, most experts place the number closer to $100 billion)....

.....Trump also weighed in Thursday on violent protests at the University of California at Berkeley on Wednesday evening, which led to the cancellation of a planned speech by Milo Yiannopoulos, a far-right provocateur and editor at Breitbart News. Stephen K. Bannon, Trump's chief strategist, previously was the chairman of Breitbart News, a conservative website.
