BOR and Greg Poulgrain - Jim DiEugenio - 09-02-2017

Of late, Len Osanic had been taking his show Black Op Radio to new heights.

In just the last few weeks, he has had on Bill Pepper on MLK, Grover Proctor on the Raleigh call, and Doug Valentine on his new important book, The CIA as Organzied Crime.

Upcoming, he will soon have Dan Hardway on the new audio version of the Lopez Report and John Newman on his revised edition of JFK and Vietnam, and his new volume Countdown to Darkness.

This week, tomorrow night to be exact, he will have on the Australian scholar, Greg Poulgrain who wrote the Incubus of Intervention about JFK, Dulles and Indonesia. I was in on this interview from Brisbane. To me, it was a bit shocking what Greg revealed. No one has ever been able to piece together what really happened on the night of September 30, 1965, which was the beginning of the end for Sukarno, who had been backed by JFK. The CIA backed plot to overthrow Sukarno--and supplant him with Suharto-- was considered by the Agency to be their masterpiece of covert action; and the rumor is David Phillips had been to Jakarta to help organize it in advance.

In this interview, Poulgrain reveals that he talked to one the alleged conspirators who was released from prison after Suharto fell. What this man told Greg is essentially the key to the jigsaw puzzle which no one could ever figure out before. In other words, there had been a lot of theories as to what happened. But now we know how it actually worked. Fifty years later.

It's important because, first what happened that night completely reversed Kennedy's policy in Indonesia, and second, thus began what is by far the bloodiest CIA coup in history. On the show you will hear as Greg corrects the previous estimates of how many died when Sukarno fell. It was twice as many as previously given.

Len's show should be on satellite if you ask me. Instead the public gets Howard Stern.

I agree Jim. Len has some great guests on and great interviews. Indonesian history is such an under reported and little understood area. I am pleased it will be covered on BOR.

It is, utterly compelling. In fact, I'd go as far as acclaiming this the single-most original & revelatory programme on the Dallas coup & the foreign policy consequences of it that I've heard. Wonderful stuff.

And all the better for having an informed interlocutor asking more systematic & structured questions.

Well done to all concerned.

One minor question that intrigued - the mention of Kennedy's determination to exclude the CIA from negotiations for his proposed visit to Indonesia. This isn't in Ambassador Jones' book, which is otherwise fiercely critical of the agency. What is the source?

Thanks Paul.

I will have to ask Greg about that when he returns from Jakarta. He was leaving right after that show.

But you are correct, IMO that stuff he got across was very crucial. Writers have been walking around in the dark trying to put together exactly how the overthrow worked. But the info Greg got from LaTief was the missing link to how it happened. I have to say, it was pretty clever. They colonels did not go to Suharto's since he was a part of it. He then did not show, but his friend and agent did. They were not supposed to kill the suspects originally. That was added to it by Sjam.

I really hope that Greg writes his book about 1965.
