Trump Executive Order and the Latest National Emergency - Lauren Johnson - 28-12-2017 Trump quietly signed an executive order a week ago with alarmingly broad language allowing for the taking of assets of persons violating human rights. Here is the key paragraph: Quote:[FONT=&]I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, find that the prevalence and severity of human rights abuse and corruption that have their source, in whole or in substantial part, outside the United States, such as those committed or directed by persons listed in the Annex to this order, have reached such scope and gravity that they threaten the stability of international political and economic systems. Human rights abuse and corruption undermine the values that form an essential foundation of stable, secure, and functioning societies; have devastating impacts on individuals; weaken democratic institutions; degrade the rule of law; perpetuate violent conflicts; facilitate the activities of dangerous persons; and undermine economic markets. The United States seeks to impose tangible and significant consequences on those who commit serious human rights abuse or engage in corruption, as well as to protect the financial system of the United States from abuse by these same persons. It now appears that the EO is being used to target the core of the Democratic Party. From ZeroHedge: Quote:The Trump Administration quietly issued an Executive Order (EO) last Thursday which allows for the freezing of US-housed assets belonging to foreign individuals or entities deemed "serious human rights abusers," along with government officials andexecutives of foreign corporations (current or former) found to have engaged in corruption - which includes the misappropriation of state assets, the expropriation of private assets for personal gain, and corruption related to government contracts or the extraction of natural resources. Furthermore, anyone in the United States who aids or participates in said corruption or human rights abuses by foreign parties is subject to frozen assets - along with any U.S. corporation who employs foreigners deemed to have engaged in corruption on behalf of the company. A national emergency? That means the Unitary Executive can do what he wants. Trump Executive Order and the Latest National Emergency - Peter Lemkin - 28-12-2017 A little confusing just what this order is cover for. Trump cares NOTHING about Human Rights - quite the opposite...but is using this as cover to hurt his enemies and help his friends. This bears watching. It also may be Unconstitutional. It certainly is a nasty piece of work which, to me, on the surface states to be against international 'offenders', but I suspect is mainly against domestic opponents and perhaps to enable a large group of persons in the USA that can be threatened or arrested or have their assets seized. Most of Trump's own team would easily fit into the rubric of Human Rights offenders...but as his administration and not the Courts will decide who gets 'attacked', for now this is a very dangerous Executive Order. I'm not a Constitutional lawyer, but my first thought is that selective enforcement may make this Unconstitutional and open it up for Judicial review and being frozen in its tracks....likely not before a lot of harm is done. Harm is Trump's middle name. |
