Another fine interview from the best deep political radio programme around. Much as I enjoyed it, can't say I bought Nadler's revisionist take on Judith Miller; nor his alternative explanation for Kelly's murder. But well worth a listen, and thanks for drawing attention to it.

I'm no fan of Ms Miller either but I thought Nadler's take on her interesting: First she makes serious and VERY unwelcome waves for the 'Bio/Military Industrial Complex'; next she becomes the darling of a gaggle of Neocon cheerleading mouthpieces; next she is discredited when her cheerleading has served its purpose. Has a certain elegance to it don't you think?

Also, on the David Kelly business. I'm agnostic. I finished Norman Baker's book about 3 weeks ago. One thing that jarred with me in Nadler's piece was his pointed assertion of its title "The MURDER of David Kelly, whereas the actual title is 'The Strange Death of David Kelly'. That said DK's discomfiture over the Gilligan broadcast followed by his H of C committee grilling could arguably have provided a not-to-be missed plausible cover for any group already contemplating his elimination.

I agree about the elegance, Pete, but I'm damned if I can conceive of Ms. Miller writing anything that wasn't cleared by the same people who fed her all that guff about Iraq etc. Looked at that way, doesn't the piece on the BMIC just amount to some intelligent credibility-building?

I've never got round to finishing Baker's book after listening to him solemnly hypothesize that Iraqi agents terminated Kelly. Good grief, what an insult.

I have to agree that this conclusion seems to be a complete cop out and that henceforward Baker's motivates must be treated with caution. There are so many indications of a domestic cover-up over DK's suicide-ation that trying to pin it on Saddam merely points to the hypothesis that the same boys who brought us the Iraq wars - I & II - are almost certainly responsible for DK's demise also.

As Nadler mentioned, Danzig sits on the board of HGSI. He is also currently defense policy advisor to President Obama [1]. He holds almost half a million dollars in HGSI shares as part of his compensation [2]. In mid-July, the Dept. of Health and Human Services ordered 45,000 doses of HGSI's anthrax drug [3]. HGSI's stock price tripled over the next three days ($3.32 to $12.51 per share) [4], and currently trades at about $19 a share.

Could be; but a dangerous and ultra-sensitive area to be credibility building in with its potential to open a BIG can of worms. OTOH It could be that the Neocon cheerleading (though I agree natural enough to the personality type) was that much more dedicated and intense as a sort of quid pro quo for the earlier transgression, with the denouement inevitable when her usefulness had expired. OK, I accept that the left delight in taking credit for having exposed her methods, but the history of the left is one of being near effortlessly co-opted and deceived in such matters.

Quote: I've never got round to finishing Baker's book after listening to him solemnly hypothesize that Iraqi agents terminated Kelly. Good grief, what an insult.
My overall impression of Baker, through the book, is one of credulous naivety. He makes daring forays into the 'world of conspiracy theories' but is always quick to qualify his own position. The credulousness is apparent in his obvious acceptance of the official narratives of major historical events and the role of the police and security services in them. I guess that, like anyone coveting esteem and a fond self-defined role in national politics, he instinctively understands the limits of allowable discourse. That is what handicaps him the most, but there is also an unmistakable air of naive niceness about the man. His conclusion that the deed was done by Iraqis is somewhat qualified by the merest of hints that, in so doing, they may have been the tools/patsies of either the US or UK SS's. IOW, he can envisage our SS's being involved in skulduggery, but simply cannot accept that they would ever stoop to doing the knife-wielding themselves - a bit like the need to outsource torture I suppose and very childlike. Personally I think he has effectively made himself persona non grata in Privy Council level political circles so he might just as well shed his illusions and get really stuck in - dangerous though.

Having said all that, the book IS a useful reference IMO, if only for time lines, geography, and background information on those associated with the case, together with their on-the-record utterances. A bit like Nafeez Ahmed on 7/7 though a tad less scholarly.

Ah, yes, what Peter Shore called "the other level of government" (?)...

I'm no expert in UK Labour Party affairs but it has always struck me as odd that Peter Shore didn't rise further.

I was on the lower rungs of a prospective national political career through the 'Winter of discontent' and the later resignation of Jim Callaghan. I vividly recall Peter Shore being regarded as his most feared potential replacement. Michael Foot, bless him, was a gift to the right. Similarly with Foot's departure; Peter Shore was the man the Right most feared - but it wasn't to be and Kinnochio (aka the Welsh Windbag) became yet another gift to them.

So why was did Peter Shore's rise hit a glass ceiling? Could it be that he was a genuinely incorruptible 'man of the left' who simply could not be allowed to take control, even of entertainment division of real government?

PS - sorry this is a bit off-topic - maybe a seperate thread is warranted

About the Documentary:

For filmmaker Bob Coen, who was raised in Zimbabwe where the former white regime has been accused of unleashing anthrax against the black population, biological weapons have a deep personal meaning. He embarks on a journey that raises troubling questions about the FBI’s investigation of the 21st century’s first act of biological terrorism.

Coen’s investigation takes him from the U.S. to the U.K. and from the edge of Siberia to the tip of Africa. In a rare interview, Coen confronts “Doctor Death” Wouter Basson, who headed Project Coast, the South African apartheid-era bio-warfare program. Project Coast used germ warfare against select targets within the country’s black population.

Anthrax War also investigates the mysterious deaths of some of the world’s leading anthrax scientists, including Dr. David Kelly, the UK’s top military microbiologist, the Soviet defector Dr. Vladimir Pasechnik, and Dr. Bruce Ivins. The FBI claims – despite the doubts of highly ranked U.S. officials – that Ivins was the only person behind the U.S. anthrax murders.

In tracing the 2001 bio-terror attacks in the U.S. to the heart of the U.S. bio-defense program, this film raises an alarm. These attacks that helped prepare a country for war have also spawned a multi-billion dollar bio-defense boom. The line between bio-offense and bio-defense is becoming extremely thin. Biological weapons research is now being conducted by corporations and private labs without effective government oversight. The international treaty prohibiting the development of offensive bio-weapons may no longer be sufficient to keep the world from drifting towards the unthinkable biological warfare.

One aspect of this film hits home; right here in North Carolina, thanks to Richard Burr (R-NC) who as Chair of the Senate Subcommittee on Bioterrorism and Public Health Preparedness crafted legislation dubbed Project Bioshield aka Bio-Shield, BARDA and others. Pay close attention to what is disclosed about the legislation in the film and then think about the H1N1 vaccine.

One last thing, everyone who was involved in stopping the National Bio and Agro Defense Facility (NBAF) from coming to Butner should find the contents of this film chilling. Furthermore, you deserve a pat on the back (insert pat here), the prospects of a post-NBAF town to me is unimaginable, especially after watching this film.

Here is Anthrax War, presented in 6 parts
