Internet providers would be forced to keep logs of their customers' activities for one yearin case police want to review them in the futureunder legislation that a U.S. House of Representatives committee approved today.
The 19 to 10 vote represents a victory for conservative Republicans, who made data retention their first major technology initiative after last fall's elections, and the Justice Department officials who have quietly lobbied for the sweeping new requirements, a development first reported by CNET.
A last-minute rewrite of the bill expands the information that commercial Internet providers are required to store to include customers' names, addresses, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporarily-assigned IP addresses, some committee members suggested. By a 7-16 vote, the panel rejected an amendment that would have clarified that only IP addresses must be stored.
It represents "a data bank of every digital act by every American" that would "let us find out where every single American visited Web sites," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, who led Democratic opposition to the bill.

Well, if we had good FOIA laws and follow-through, there would no longer be need for doing backups etc....all information ever on your computer would be in perpetuity filed and perhaps even cross-indexed at the NSA, HS, TIA, DOD, FBI CIA and countless other agencies. How modern.....or is this post-Modern?.....perhaps Post-Neo-Fascism
To be honest, what upsets and frightens me more than that they propose and often get into law things like this, is the silence of the lambs in my own and other counties. Yes, some few brave souls speak out loud and clear; others work in silence - but, sadly, most are just too busy with their finances, waistline, toys, TV circus and life...as if the political, financial, social and humanitarian/legal changes now happening are 'warp speed' are not part of life and will not effect all of ours....[negatively, perhaps in the long run, fatally].
