A New, Permanent Presence of U.S. Troops on Australian Soil

November 12th, 2011Via: ABC News:
Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has refused to give details of the extra military ties expected to be announced when US president Barack Obama visits Darwin next week.
Media reports suggest Mr Obama will announce the US will begin rotating Marines through a base in Darwin, with a new permanent presence on Australian soil.
Mr Rudd was asked today if he would confirm the report and he was very diplomatic in his response, but less so in comments directed at the Greens who have suggested any decision to boost US troop numbers should be put before Parliament.
Australia and the US have been working together for a year on ways to boost military cooperation.
They want to bring in more US troops to strategic areas including Darwin, as well as increase the number of joint exercises and the amount of training.
Mr Obama will announce the details during his visit. Defence Minister Stephen Smith has called it the biggest operational addition to the alliance since the 1980s.

Why don't we just make it a new state?!....sorry Magda :p What a disgusting and hypocritical Empire, now with two poodles who speak English. Can anyone imagine the USA allowing any other nation to set up a military base on our stolen* land?!:mexican: *[we stole it 'fair and square']

Australia has has been a forward operating base for a long time. The good ole USofA is not the first to take advantage of its dominating location, its vast resources, etc. (Sorry, too, Maggie... and all who lie under the Southern Cross). Indeed, most of the globe can be considered (or soon will be) worthy of an FOB in their postal address. [Mine is in the greater realm of the military-industrial complex centered on the old rude bridge that arched the flood, its nearby airfield, et alia.] The reason the lanes in the territory have some mystery left in them is because they disgorged a number of people suddenly* one day when the Empire's local marines (dressed in red) tried to seize their powder, generating a couple of poems, lots of roadside historical markers, re-enactments and a museum or two.

* I note the word 'suddenly' with tongue-in-cheek, having an annotated copy of Ray Raphael's "The First American Revolution", and other histories written during the era.

Not happy. Not happy at all. Locally they are known as septic tanks = Yanks. This is going to be fought and resisted on the ground but as you note our poodle and her keepers are all beholden to Washington. We have several US bases here and despite the title "joint facilities" we are not allowed in there to see what actually goes on though we are allowed to serve coffee and buscuits to the marines on guard there. Last time an Australian leader thought he actually led the nation and wanted to know what went on inside there it came to a very bad end for him and us all. Though not quite as bad as Allende. Since then Australian leaders have always checked with the US embassy first before changing policy or even their clothes and there have never been any visits to the 'joint facilities'.
