I thought this wouldn't be of special interest until I note the date of destruction was 2007! There were much earlier files destroyed just after the War, I'm sure.....this date is puzzling! It needs explanation.

Stinks of covering the tracks of those who were integrated into Gehlen Org and the BND as their handlers retire from positions of power.

Here's the piece, for posterity:

Quote:BERLIN, Nov. 30 (UPI) -- Germany's foreign intelligence agency destroyed personnel files for former employees of the Secret Service and the Gestapo in 2007, historians said.

The Bundesnachrichtendienst, or BND, destroyed the files in 2007, historians studying ties between the Third Reich and the foreign intelligence agency told Spiegel Online.

One week before BND head Ernst Uhrlau is to retire, an independent commission he appointed to research the agency's Nazi roots uncovered the destruction of documents relating to 250 agency officials who were "in significant intelligence positions in the SS, the SD (the intelligence agency of the SS and the Nazi Party) or the Gestapo," Spiegel reported Wednesday.

Some of those whose files were destroyed were investigated for possible war crimes in the aftermath of World War II.

Commission spokesman and historian Klaus-Dietmar Henke said he was "stunned" by the findings, and the commission has called for a full investigation of the document destruction.

Most likely this was done with the approval of the US due to a new era of war crime unaccountability and the destruction of records which most favors US government war criminals.

Agreed, Jan, but BND has covered it tracks since the War and those who worked with them [such as the CIA] have helped them cover their tracks since then......most of this was done shortly after the war and through the 50s and 60s. A date of 2007 begs for some explanation, IMHO. It seems as if a large number were destroyed then. Why?!

Agreed, Peter. However, the third paragraph of the UPI piece is provocative.

We here know the nature of "independent commissions" set up by those who write the historybooks....

Can't risk letting a truly independent researcher get his hands on documentary evidence now, can we?
