When the massacre occurred at Jonestown, the CIA station chief in Guyana's capital, Georgetown, was James Adkins, who subsequently came a cropper in the Iran-Contra affair. It was Adkins who sat up all night with a radio, trying to find out what had happened. Eventually, he made contact with the Temple's Odell Rhodes, who had escaped from Jonestown to the police station in nearby Matthews Ridge. After talking with Rhodes and learning of the many deaths, Adkins notified the U.S. ambassador and, moments later, CIA headquarters.
