Lauren, I think Jan & I were on the same page in terms of control - but, of course, things don't just end there. I should also explain that Masonry offers a very positive occult tradition and techniques aimed at spiritual development. But things can and do go wrong with that, as with any secret society, when lofty aims are subverted for personal benefit and group protection. And from there things just go downhill, as the urge to power is activated.
And as with anything really, any technique - whether it be an occult one or not - can be used for good or for evil... take P2 as a clear example.

The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort.
