Froomkin doesn't really say, but its a very good question. History tells us desperate times result in extremist Governments.
I've still got a hunch the US may not endure in its current form. There's a bit of secessionist talk coming from Texas. The south never seems happy and the Government is still racing headlong in the opposite direction to the people. I don't think there's much holding the US together except hollow patriotism.
