The republic was abolished shortly after his birth there and the whole population was exiled to Kazakhstan because of their collaboration with the Nazis, at least amongst many, who assisted in showing them access to the oil fields of Azerbaijan. The former territory was divided between Georgia, Dagestan and North Ossetia. Hence the seeds of today's Georgian conflicts. The republic was restored by Kruschev in 1957 and the population allowed to return.
