The main ones are now a joke. Google, Yahoo, Bing etc., utterly useless is returning hits for specific information - and instead "flood" your browser with trivia and undifferentiated information. I feel sure this has been done to restrict access to deep politics information and stories, and that this action has increased dramatically in the last few months.

The danger is that ordinary people will be left entirely at the mercy of the major media BS and propaganda - unless they can be very specific about their search terms. Even then the major search engines filter out results all too often.

We as a community are in danger of becoming a sealed community communicating only with ourselves, I think.]]>

There are a ton of browser extensions that promise to protect your privacy, which leads to some natural questions: Which is the best? Do they all do the same thing? What should I really download? In this guide, we're going to look at the most popular browser extensions that promise to protect your privacy online, and give you our recommendations.
We've talked about why you should care about your privacy several times here, so whether you choose to do something to protect yourself is up to youwe're not going to rehash it. Instead, we're going to dive into the tools available to keep your data safe. Most of them fall into three groups: add-ons that prevent third parties from tracking your movements, add-ons that block ads and scripts, and passive security tools that enforce good habits. Don't worry, though. You don't need to download a ton of apps to keep yourself safe and your data close to pocket. Here are the best in each group.

Block Ads, Scripts, and Popups with AdBlock Plus

Ad and script blockers give you control over your browsing experience. They can block ads on the sites you visit and kill third-party scripts and widgets that send your data to who knows where. However, with great power comes great responsibility: If you don't know how to use them, these tools can break the sites you read, rendering them unusable until you figure out what to allow and what to block. Plus, blocking ads can has a very real impact on the site and the people who work on it (like us here at Lifehacker). Even so, it puts the power into your hands to decide which sites are worth supporting and which are just too annoying to use without an ad-blocker.
AdBlock Plus (Firefox/Chrome) blocks banner ads, pop-up ads, rollover ads, and more. It stops you from visiting known malware-hosting domains, and also disables third-party tracking cookies and scripts. We think it has the right combination of ease-of-use, on-and-off toggling, and hands-off management that makes it a tool that anyone can pick up and use. Power users can get their hands dirty with different subscription lists and tweaking the active lists they use, but basic users can enable it and walk away.
The Alternatives:

In our opinion, Adblock Plus is all you need, but there are a few other extensions that do the same thing. Here are your other options:
  • NoScript (Firefox) and ScriptSafe (Chrome, formerly ScriptNo): Both disable all scripts from running on pages without you specifically adding them to an allow list. This includes Java, JavaScript, Flash, and others. They're powerful, but they're also really aggressive, and will break an awful lot of sites. If you use them, you have to be up to the task of digging through scripts on every new site you visit to figure out which ones will make the site even work properly. Plus, AdBlock Plus already does this (and is less aggressive), you just have to add the right filters.
  • FlashBlock for Firefox and for Chrome: Specifically blocks Flash until you load it, including web video, advertisements, and other annoying site elements. FlashBlock is well regarded and in use by a lot of people, but all it does is handle flash. It's a good install on the side if you want to, for example, stop YouTube videos from auto-playing. If you're looking to block ads though, AdBlock Plus is more useful and flexible.
  • Better Pop Up Blocker (Chrome): Vastly improves on Chrome's native pop-up blocking by stopping pop-unders and new-tab popups generated by javascript and other on-action scripts that Chrome would normally allow through. If you're already using AdBlock Plus and don't have a problem with ads, you don't need this, but if you're running into sneaky pop-ups that make it through your defenses anyway, give it a try.

Stop Everyone from Tracking You with Disconnect

Anti-tracking and anti-cookie extensions have exploded recently. We covered a number of them when we discussed how you can stop companies from tracking your movements on the web. Since then, the market has only grown, with more extensions and apps that all honestly do the same thing, with little more than UI tweaks and differences between them.
Disconnect (Firefox/Chrome/IE/Safari) is our pick because it continues to add useful features and improve its database, and its secure Wi-Fi and bandwidth optimization features aren't available in other tools. It blocks third party tracking cookies and gives you control over all site scripts and elements from a simple-to-use toolbar menu. It also protects you from tracking by social networks like Facebook, Google, and Twitter, which use your browsing even off-site to collect data about you. Finally, Disconnect protects you from sidejacking (or widgetjacking), where an attacker can use stolen cookies to access personal data without having to know your password, with its Secure Wi-Fi feature.
The Alternatives:

Disconnect is our favorite of the bunch, but there are other extensions that do the same thing (or some of the same things) if you need alternatives:
  • Do Not Track Me (Firefox/Chrome/IE/Safari): Do Not Track Me offers a drop-down browser toolbar that shows you which tracking cookies and scripts have loaded on a site, and gives you the option to disable them entirely. It's similar to other tools, but with a friendly, colorful UI. It also leaves plug-ins and scripts enabled until you specifically turn them off. Disconnect is much more powerful and feature rich, Do Not Track Me might appeal to people who want to leave everything on and disable items selectively.
  • Ghostery (Firefox/Chrome/Safari/IE): Much like the others, Ghostery blocks tracking cookies and scripts from running by default. It'll also show you what it's blocked, so you can see whether the items it's blocked are harmless or intrusive. Ghostery's database is huge, and gives you the power to block all, some, or none of the things that it finds. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in a while and Disconnect's features have surpassed it. Still, it's a solid alternative for people who can't get Disconnect's latest version.
  • Priv3 (Firefox): Priv3 is probably the least intrusive and most transparent of this breed of privacy protecting add-on. All it does is stop social widgets and plugins from loading and sending your data to social networks until you interact with them. Since Facebook is tracking you and Twitter is tracking you, even when you're not using those networks, Priv3 is a lightweight tool to stop them, but keep in mind that it doesn't do anything else.
You could argue that Disconnect, Do Not Track Me, and Ghostery all do the same thing, but we still think that Disconnect is the most robust of the three. That said, Disconnect's newest version is only available for Firefox and Chrome, so if you prefer Safari, IE, or Opera, we'd suggest going with Ghostery instead.
Some of this comes down to personal preference and what works best in the browser you use most often, so don't hesitate to try something else if one doesn't work. The worst that can happen is you're extra protected, and none of these add-ons have that much resource overhead.
Additional Privacy Tools You Should Have

In addition to privacy protecting tools and ad blockers, a few other add-ons, utilities, and services came up while we were researching this piece that you shouldn't roam the web without.

HTTPS Everywhere (Firefox/Chrome) is a must-have regardless of what other security tools you opt to use. Once installed, the extension will shunt your connection to SSL whenever possible, and will try to find secure versions of the sites you visit. It's a great way to protect your browsing without really lifting a finger. It can break some sites that weren't meant to work with HTTPS though, so you may have to whitelist sites from time to time if the secure version doesn't work.
A Virtual Private Network (VPN)encrypts all of your internet traffic and offers the most possible protection from prying eyes.We've covered VPN services in detail before, including what to look for, what makes a good one, and some great providers to try. Look for a provider that keeps only the minimum required logs for troubleshooting purposes, offers strong encryption, is well regarded by its users, and offers multiple exits locations. Contrary to common belief, don't just spring for any offshore VPNjust because your VPN provider is in a far-off country doesn't mean it's secure, or at all private. For more suggestions, our friends at TorrentFreak just updated their list of providers that take your anonymity seriously, and it looks a bit like ours. If you're just looking for a free or freemium service to keep you protected while you're out and about, and you're not ready to try on a full, paid, VPN service yet (or roll your own), try Hotspot Shield, Hideman, or Tunnelbear.
Antivirus and Antimalware utilities are essential to protecting security. It may sound like "How to Internet: 101," but taking care to avoid suspicious sites, practice good internet hygiene (eg, not opening suspicious attachments, checking file names before you download, etc), and keep updated antivirus and antimalware tools on your PC is important. Often the term "privacy" is couched in terms of advertising and marketing, but the risk of identity theft and getting infected with ransomware is growing. Other Security Tools You Probably Don't Need, but May Want

We've covered the most important privacy and security tools you need already, but there's always another step you can take to make sure your communications can't be intercepted and read by third parties. Here are a few other tools you might consider:
  • Web of Trust (WOT): (Firefox/Chrome/Safari/IE) WOT does a great job at ranking sites by reputation, and will show you whether a specific site has been known to host malware or is loaded with tracking cookies and scripts that could result in malware or adware on your system. It's not an ad blocker or anything, but it does rank and notify you when the site you're visiting is less than trustworthy. Advanced users may not need the hand-holding, but beginners and anyone else who wishes they could see behind the veil of what's loaded when they visit a site may.
  • Encryption for Email and Chat: If you want to take desktop security to a whole new level, you might consider encrypting your email and instant messages. Our favorite chat clients for Windows and Mac, Pidgin and Adium (respectively) can both do this pretty easily. If you need another option, we've mentioned TorChat as well. For your email,SafeGmail or Mailvelope gets the job done for Gmail and other webmail users. For everyone else, PGP is the way to go. Here's how to set it up.
  • Tor (Windows/Mac/Linux) encrypts your web traffic and bounces it across a series of other computers, known as relays, to keep their location and browsing private and anonymous. Granted, that anonymity only goes so far: traffic leaving a Tor exit node is unencrypted, so while traffic inside the Tor network is encrypted and anonymous, ultimately your browsing comes out of someone else's pipe and looks like normal web traffic. Tor is built for anonymity with a nod to securitynot the other way around. You can read more about how Tor works here. It's a great way to stay anonymous on the internet, but don't mistake it for something like a VPN.
There's a ton of overlap between a lot of these tools, which is why we wanted to trim the fat and pick specifics that we think you should install. Keeping too many on your system isn't necessarily a bad thing, but it can slow your computer down at worst, and at best it doesn't offer you any additional protection. If you're not using any because you're not sure which to use, now you have some solid options. Either way, the tools are at your fingertips. Late on the evening of January 11, 2013, someone sent me an interesting email. It was encrypted, and sent from the sort of anonymous email service that smart people use when they want to hide their identity. Sitting at the kitchen table in the small cottage where I lived in Berkeley with my wife and two cats, I decrypted it.
The anonymous emailer wanted to know if I could help him communicate securely with Laura Poitras, the documentary filmmaker who had repeatedly cast a critical eye on American foreign policy.

I didn't know it at the time, but I had just been contacted by Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency contractor who was then preparing a momentous leak of government data.
A month earlier, Snowden had anonymously emailed Glenn Greenwald, a Guardian journalist and chronicler of war-on-terror excesses, but Greenwald didn't use encryption and didn't have the time to get up to speed, so Snowden moved on. As is now well known, Snowden decided to contact Poitras because she used encryption. But he didn't have her encryption key, as is necessary to send someone encrypted email, and the key wasn't posted on the web. Snowden, extraordinarily knowledgeable about how internet traffic is monitored, didn't want to send her an unencrypted email, even if just to ask for her key. So he needed to find someone he thought he could trust who both had her key and used encrypted email.
That was me.
And as it turned out, several months later I was drawn more deeply into the whole thing, when Snowden got back in touch and asked me to work with him to launch an online anti-surveillance petition.
Until now, I haven't written about my modest role in the Snowden leak, but with the release of Poitras' documentary on him, "Citizenfour," I feel comfortable connecting the dots. I think it's helpful to show how privacy technologists can work with sources and journalists to make it possible for leaks to happen in a secure way. Securing those types of interactions is part of my job now that I work with Greenwald and Poitras at The Intercept, but there are common techniques and general principles from my interactions with Snowden that could serve as lessons to people outside this organization.

When I got that first email, I was working as a staff technologist for the Electronic Frontier Foundation and as the chief technology officer of the Freedom of the Press Foundation. My encryption key was posted at both sites, so Snowden was able to find it easily, and the key was digitally signed by people who were well-known in the privacy world (pioneering blogger Cory Doctorow and free software champion Richard Stallman, for instance); this meant those people had digitally vouched, in a way that was incredibly difficult to forge, that the key really belonged to me and not to, say, some NSA trickster. In other words, Snowden didn't need to worry about the key being a fake. Poitras was a founding board member of the FPF, so he assumed I would have her key, and he was right.
It wasn't uncommon for me to receive the type of email Snowden sent strangers send me encrypted emails all the time, requesting help. Some of those emails are from people who appear to have personal issues to work out, but the inquiry from Snowden, emailing under a pseudonym, struck me as serious. I quickly forwarded it in an encrypted email to Poitras. The encryption technology we used the standard among email users concerned with privacy is known by two acronyms: GPG, for GNU Privacy Guard, or PGP, for Pretty Good Privacy.

The frustrating and ironic thing about GPG is that even experts make mistakes with it. Even, as it turns out, Edward Snowden.
I now had Poitras' permission to send Snowden her encryption key, but in his first email to me, Snowden had forgotten to attach his key, which meant I could not encrypt my response. I had to send him an unencrypted email asking for his key first. His oversight was of no security consequenceit didn't compromise his identity in any waybut it goes to show how an encryption system that requires users to take specific and frequent actions almost guarantees mistakes will be made, even by the best users.
After receiving Snowden's key, I sent him an encrypted email with Poitras' key. This enabled him to send his first encrypted email to Poitras, in which he called himself Citizenfour. But I wasn't out of the identity-confirmation picture yet.
Snowden and Poitras quickly set up a more secure channel for communication. Poitras created an anonymous email account, doing so with the Tor Browser that masks your identity on the web, and she created a new GPG key, just for communicating with Citizenfour. This was advisable because, if she were under surveillance by the NSA or any other intelligence agency, they might have compromised her known accounts, and she would prefer for there to be no trace of her true name in the correspondence with this secrecy-seeking stranger.
But the internet is a hall of mirrors. Even though Snowden and Poitras had set up new anonymous email accounts and traded GPG keys through a trusted chain of communication, it's still possible that something could have gone wrong. Maybe one end of the communication (either Snowden or Poitras) could have had their computer hacked, with the attacker in a position to impersonate them. Or maybe they could be victim to a man-in-the-middle attack where, for example, the NSA tricks two parties who think they're having an encrypted conversation directly with each other into secretly having two separate encrypted conversations with the attacker, who forwards their messages along.
To be extra sure that these things weren't happening, Snowden wanted to verify through a separate channel that he had Laura's legitimate key. He asked Poitras to get me to tweet the fingerprint of her new GPG key.
Just a tiny bit of background: encryption keys are technically just strings of random data that scramble and unscramble information. Because these keys are too long to memorize or conveniently post on bios or put on business cards, each one has a far shorter "fingerprint" that is unique to the key. These fingerprints are just 40 characters long. To verify the new key that Poitras had sent him, Snowden needed to receive her new fingerprint from me and then compare it to the one he was using.
If the fingerprint that I tweeted didn't match the key that Poitras sent him, that would be evidence that NSA or some other actor may be attempting a man-in-the-middle attack. If the fingerprints matched, however, he could be confident that he had her real key and no one was attacking their communication.

It might seem strange to use Twitter, a public platform, to convey crucial information, but in some circumstances it makes perfect sense. Doing a man-in-the-middle attack against encrypted email without getting caught is significantly simpler than performing an attack on a public platform that anyone in the world might notice. If NSA had hacked my Twitter account and posted the wrong fingerprint, there's a good chance I, or one of my followers, would notice and start looking into it.
So on January 28, I tweeted Poitras' new fingerprint:

With that, Snowden, using the handle Citizenfour, had a very secure channel for communicating with Poitras, using the email address 303@riseup.net. I assumed this would be the end of my work with him.

Encrypting Greenwald

Snowden signed off from my life, or so I thought, with a final request: He asked that I help Greenwald get encrypted. He said it was an important task, though he didn't tell me why. He also told me that someday I would be proud of the role I was playing.
I tried to teach GPG to Greenwald but I had the same problem Snowden had encountered when he reached out in December, that Greenwald was busy and couldn't focus on it. Several months later, however, I succeeded in getting Greenwald up to speed on using an encrypted chat system called Off-the-Record (OTR), which is much simpler than GPG. For the first time he was able to have encrypted communications on the internet.
Then, on May 9, I got an encrypted email from Poitras that was exciting and alarming.

I'm working on something with Glenn and I really need to get him on a secure (preferably Tails) system. He does not have the technical skills to set this up himself, and I'm trying to keep things compartmentalized, so I don't want to email him about this topic directly on a non-secure channel.
Poitras didn't tell me what was going on, and I didn't ask. Not who, not what. The same with Greenwald. I didn't ask. This was basic operational security. Whatever they were doing was sensitive, and I had no need to know. Whether you're working in the analog or digital world, this is one of the simplest and most important security practices: share secrets only with people who have to know. The fewer people who know a secret, the lower the chances are that it will be compromised.
Tails, the secure system Poitras asked me to get for Greenwald, is serious business. It's a hardened operating system designed for people who need to be anonymous, and not a lot of people use it. The acronym stands for The Amnesic Incognito Live System. Before Poitras asked me to teach it to Greenwald, I had never used it. Crucially, everything you do in Tails is anonymous. All internet activity is routed through Tor, so by default your privacy is protected. And you run Tails directly off of a DVD or a USB stick it is not installed on your hard drive. Since Tails operates completely independently from your hard drive and usual operating system, it offers a hefty dose of protection from malware and from anyone who might inspect your computer to look at what you've been doing.
It's also a free software project, just like Tor, GPG, and OTR. That means the code is open source and can be peer reviewed, a level of transparency that makes the software resistant to backdoors, covert access points buried deep in the code.
On May 13, after creating a customized version of Tails for Greenwald, I hopped on my bike and pedaled to the FedEx office on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, where I slipped the Tails thumb drive into a shipping package, filled out a customs form that asked about the contents ("Flash Drive Gift," I wrote), and sent it to Greenwald in Brazil. He received the package two weeks later, it having been delayed in transit, for what I believed to be bureaucratic rather than nefarious reasons, and the blue thumb drive actually made a cameo appearance in "Citizenfour." For a technologist, this was a dream come true.

Snowden's Website

Near the end of May, I received an anonymous and encrypted email from an account called "verax," which is Latin for "truth teller." The writer told me that he was the same person I had been in touch with several months earlier. He had a new request.
Would I help him build a website that would launch a global petition against surveillance?
I still didn't know his name, where he was located, or what else he was up to, though clearly whatever he had going on with Poitras and Greenwald was sensitive. Because of my respect for them, I believed that anything they were going to this much trouble to accomplish was going to be worthwhile, so I agreed to build the site. I started using Tails in all my work with the contact, because I sensed that I had to take the highest security precautions possible. As Poitras had done with him in January, I created a new anonymous email account and GPG key just for communicating with him. He was glad that I did.

Got it. Good idea, btw. There are some issues with keys being used for fingerprinting as they move over the network.
He said he was writing an anti-surveillance manifesto that he wanted to post on the yet-to-be-named site, along with a petition that people could add their names to. The site would be unveiled once the journalists he was working with published their first stories. I had ample experience building privacy-respecting websites, including many online petitions for EFF. Among others, I built a petition against the draconian online copyright enforcement bill SOPA that sent more than a million emails to Congress. So this was familiar territory for me.
Working in Tails to remain anonymous while I developed the site, however, meant that this would be trickier than the web development I'd done in the past. I didn't have access to the latest browsers I was used to, and I didn't dare test the mobile version of the site on my smartphone. I also had concern that my coding style might betray my identity: my code for this project used similar commenting and naming conversions as other code I'd written in the past. Trying to develop software without your personal coding style is like trying to write an essay using someone else's voice. I was also concerned that the visual designs I was creating could be compared to my work in the past.
Snowden was even more worried about detection, though I didn't know it at the time. He expected to be quickly arrested and prevented from speaking for himself, and predicted that the government would use that silence to mischaracterize his intentions. To keep that from happening, Snowden decided to take a highly visible online stand against mass surveillance. Part of his plan included the petition website that he asked me to build.
On May 27, Snowden had his first encrypted conversation directly with Greenwald, who agreed to travel to Hong Kong with Poitras, funded by Guardian.
As my work on the site got underway, I had an encrypted chat with Poitras and mentioned what I was doing, though I didn't give her many details; just as I didn't need to know everything she was doing, she didn't need to know everything I was doing. She warned me to be extremely careful, and added that a very big story was in the works. I promised to be careful.
I was in a strange position. I was working with Snowden (whose name, in late May, I still didn't know) and I suspected he was a whistleblower working with Poitras, but I didn't know what he was blowing the whistle on, I didn't know a large volume of documents were involved, and I had no idea where he was located. I didn't know, for that matter, that Greenwald and Poitras would soon be heading to Hong Kong to meet him there. My ask-no-questions cluelessness was best for all concerned.
Days later, I was having an encrypted chat with Poitras, from our anonymous accounts, and she sounded excited. "You'll never guess where we are right now," I remember her writing. She didn't tell me where she was, of course, because I didn't need to know.
Snowden and I exchanged encrypted emails to discuss the site mockup and the site's functionality, and he let me know a bit of what was going on. "Just wanted to provide an update on the work out here," he emailed me on June 3. "Had an extremely productive meeting with two journalists today you may know, and will encounter a third tomorrow [Ewen MacAskill, a Guardian reporter who joined Greenwald and Poitras at the last moment]. After discussion, may hold off on the declaration for a few more days to give them time to work first."
He told me his name, so that I could attach his signature to the end of the manifesto. This was about a week before the rest of the world would learn who he was. Using Tor, I searched the internet for Edward Snowden, but I couldn't find anything. I checked LinkedIn, I checked Facebook, I think I even checked Twitter, and I found nothing. Who was this guy?
I learned more from the manifesto he sent me. It chilled my spine. He wrote about ubiquitous surveillance by not just the NSA but the intelligence agencies in the "Five Eyes" alliance: Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. He wrote about privacy and the lack of accountability, and what this means to democracy around the world. I still didn't know exactly what he was leaking, but I could tell it would be big.
It turned out that he wasn't familiar with the subtleties of using Twitter in petition campaigns. Due to my work at EFF, I knew that one of the things that can make a campaign go viral is offering a pre-written tweet to people who sign your petition and allowing them to send that tweet from their own account with just a couple of clicks. People often post these tweets, and that's almost more helpful than their signatures since it vastly increases the campaign's visibility. I explained this to Snowden, and also explained that it was really important to have a good hashtag for the campaign. He got it immediately, thanked me for pointing this out, and suggested the following Twitter template:

Snowden decided that the site should be called supportonlinerights.com, and we got to work registering it and finding a hosting company. But we ran into trouble paying for the registration and hosting. Snowden was using his real name and email address (edsnowden@lavabit.com) and his own credit cards he was not yet an international fugitive but he was also using Tor, and this caused problems. Tor protects your identity by routing your web activity through a number of nodes, so that the site you are in touch with does not know your IP address or where you connect to the Internet from. But this creates a problem when you want to pay a bill, because the use of Tor can trigger fraud warnings with corporate payment departments, since Tor links your traffic to IP addresses that might be flagged as sources of abuse.
The company through which Snowden was registering his domain name and hosting his site, Dreamhost, initially rejected his credit cards. This led to a funny situation. Snowden, in his Hong Kong hotel room, wasn't just discussing government secrets with Greenwald, Poitras and MacAskill. He was also chatting online with customer support. Trying to troubleshoot these problems, I checked the complaint logs he had opened and noticed that he explained he was using Tor because he was traveling overseas and didn't trust the local ISPs. Eventually he prevailed and his credit cards were accepted. Here is the original registration record in the internet's "WHOIS" system:

I was a bit nervous at the time, and my wife was very nervous, because the government does not look kindly on whistleblowers and the people who work with them. For security reasons, we were in a bubble. I hadn't told any of my co-workers at EFF that I was building a website for a whistleblower. So there weren't a lot of people to turn to for advice or comfort. Nonetheless, I was quite excited, especially after Greenwald's first story was published on June 5, revealing a secret NSA program to collect massive amounts of domestic phone data. I finally knew what Snowden was leaking.
"Big news today, huh?" I emailed him. "How are you doing?"
He responded quickly.

Timing is everything on this, and we aren't close to finished. It's encouraging to see prominent civil rights organizations already calling for change, and I'm hopeful that maybe this time, things will be different.
Come Monday, people will have something to be angry about. I think that will be the day. Please feel free to criticize the draft as much as you'd like: it needs to be something people are willing to give words to their own feelings.
The next few days brought a blitz of headline-grabbing stories about NSA surveillance from Greenwald, Poitras, and MacAskill as well as the The Washington Post's Barton Gellman, who received documents from Snowden even though he hadn't made the risky trip to Hong Kong. On June 9, there was another thunderbolt: Greenwald, MacAskill, and Poitras broke the news that Edward Snowden was their source, releasing a 12-minute interview with him in which he explained his motivations.
At this point I was terrified. What if he got arrested and extradited to the U.S.? What if he were forced into solitary confinement for long stretches, as had happened to Chelsea Manning? What if he was tortured or killed?
I also worried about properly shepherding the project with which he had entrusted me. What was the contingency plan for the petition website? If he was arrested, should I unilaterally launch supportonlinerights.com?
"I hope you're safe and doing well," I emailed Snowden. "In case anything happened to you, what would you like me to do with the website?"
The site was ready to go. At the time, I was using the Declaration of Independence as a placeholder for the manifesto; for security reasons, I didn't want to load the manifesto until the launch. Here's what it looked like:

On the same day the interview was posted, Gellman published the "Verax" handle while Snowden was still using it. This caused me great concern. When Snowden reached out in late May asking me to build the petition website, he initially emailed my public email address from his Verax address. I had tried hard to have no traceable connection to Snowden, but now the FBI and NSA knew his handle and were, I believed, in a position to search their massive surveillance databases to find his full email address and perhaps the email addresses he had communicated with, including mine. While I knew that I hadn't broken any laws, I became worried that I would receive a knock on the door. I could deal with that the EFF is, after all, filled with lawyers but my wife was quite scared for me.
I was unable to concentrate on anything else as I waited to hear from Snowden. Due to Gellman's story, I wasn't sure whether he was still using his "Verax" address. (Gellman later told me that he didn't and doesn't think he put anyone at risk, and that he carefully weighed the decision to publish the "verax" handle.)
On June 13, after he had parted ways with Greenwald and Poitras and gone underground in Hong Kong, he finally emailed me.

We never launched the website. When it became clear that Snowden wasn't immediately getting arrested or prevented from communicating, and that the U.S. government wasn't forcibly denying the public an accurate understanding of what he did and what his motivations were, he decided the website was no longer necessary. He never wanted the story to be about himself anyway, preferring instead that the public debate stay focused on NSA spying.

Teaching Snowden's Lessons

After the dust settled, I sat down to write a simple tutorial for using the open source tools that allowed me, Poitras, Greenwald, and Snowden to communicate securely, and I ended up with a 30-page whitepaper called Encryption Works: How to Protect Your Privacy in the Age of NSA Surveillance. I took the name from Snowden's now-famous quote: "Encryption works. Properly implemented strong crypto systems are one of the few things that you can rely on. Unfortunately, endpoint security is so terrifically weak that NSA can frequently find ways around it."
The post-Snowden world is a different place. While the NSA and its allied spy agencies still have very little accountability, and while their leaders can still lie to Congress without consequence, they're no longer operating in the dark. The internet is enjoying a renaissance of security research to try to fix the major technical holes spy agencies have been exploiting for over a decade, and companies are demanding the right to protect the privacy of their users and to challenge gag orders. Lawsuits against NSA are finally moving through the courts, when before they were stalled.
In January 2014 Edward Snowden became the newest board member of Freedom of the Press Foundation, joining Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, as well as Poitras, Greenwald, myself, and others.
Snowden was right. I am proud of the role that I played in shining light on the global espionage apparatus.

Late on the evening of January 11, 2013, someone sent me an interesting email. It was encrypted, and sent from the sort of anonymous email service that smart people use when they want to hide their identity. Sitting at the kitchen table in the small cottage where I lived in Berkeley with my wife and two cats, I decrypted it.
The anonymous emailer wanted to know if I could help him communicate securely with Laura Poitras, the documentary filmmaker who had repeatedly cast a critical eye on American foreign policy.

I didn't know it at the time, but I had just been contacted by Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency contractor who was then preparing a momentous leak of government data.

This was advisable because, if she were under surveillance by the NSA or any other intelligence agency, they might have compromised her known accounts, and she would prefer for there to be no trace of her true name in the correspondence with this secrecy-seeking stranger.
But the internet is a hall of mirrors. Even though Snowden and Poitras had set up new anonymous email accounts and traded GPG keys through a trusted chain of communication, it's still possible that something could have gone wrong. Maybe one end of the communication (either Snowden or Poitras) could have had their computer hacked, with the attacker in a position to impersonate them. Or maybe they could be victim to a man-in-the-middle attack where, for example, the NSA tricks two parties who think they're having an encrypted conversation directly with each other into secretly having two separate encrypted conversations with the attacker, who forwards their messages along.
To be extra sure that these things weren't happening, Snowden wanted to verify through a separate channel that he had Laura's legitimate key. He asked Poitras to get me to tweet the fingerprint of her new GPG key.
Just a tiny bit of background: encryption keys are technically just strings of random data that scramble and unscramble information. Because these keys are too long to memorize or conveniently post on bios or put on business cards, each one has a far shorter "fingerprint" that is unique to the key. These fingerprints are just 40 characters long. To verify the new key that Poitras had sent him, Snowden needed to receive her new fingerprint from me and then compare it to the one he was using.
If the fingerprint that I tweeted didn't match the key that Poitras sent him, that would be evidence that NSA or some other actor may be attempting a man-in-the-middle attack. If the fingerprints matched, however, he could be confident that he had her real key and no one was attacking their communication.

It might seem strange to use Twitter, a public platform, to convey crucial information, but in some circumstances it makes perfect sense. Doing a man-in-the-middle attack against encrypted email without getting caught is significantly simpler than performing an attack on a public platform that anyone in the world might notice. If NSA had hacked my Twitter account and posted the wrong fingerprint, there's a good chance I, or one of my followers, would notice and start looking into it.
So on January 28, I tweeted Poitras' new fingerprint:

With that, Snowden, using the handle Citizenfour, had a very secure channel for communicating with Poitras, using the email address 303@riseup.net. I assumed this would be the end of my work with him.

Encrypting Greenwald

Snowden signed off from my life, or so I thought, with a final request: He asked that I help Greenwald get encrypted. He said it was an important task, though he didn't tell me why. He also told me that someday I would be proud of the role I was playing.
I tried to teach GPG to Greenwald but I had the same problem Snowden had encountered when he reached out in December, that Greenwald was busy and couldn't focus on it. Several months later, however, I succeeded in getting Greenwald up to speed on using an encrypted chat system called Off-the-Record (OTR), which is much simpler than GPG. For the first time he was able to have encrypted communications on the internet.
Then, on May 9, I got an encrypted email from Poitras that was exciting and alarming.

I'm working on something with Glenn and I really need to get him on a secure (preferably Tails) system. He does not have the technical skills to set this up himself, and I'm trying to keep things compartmentalized, so I don't want to email him about this topic directly on a non-secure channel.
Poitras didn't tell me what was going on, and I didn't ask. Not who, not what. The same with Greenwald. I didn't ask. This was basic operational security. Whatever they were doing was sensitive, and I had no need to know. Whether you're working in the analog or digital world, this is one of the simplest and most important security practices: share secrets only with people who have to know. The fewer people who know a secret, the lower the chances are that it will be compromised.
Tails, the secure system Poitras asked me to get for Greenwald, is serious business. It's a hardened operating system designed for people who need to be anonymous, and not a lot of people use it. The acronym stands for The Amnesic Incognito Live System. Before Poitras asked me to teach it to Greenwald, I had never used it. Crucially, everything you do in Tails is anonymous. All internet activity is routed through Tor, so by default your privacy is protected. And you run Tails directly off of a DVD or a USB stick it is not installed on your hard drive. Since Tails operates completely independently from your hard drive and usual operating system, it offers a hefty dose of protection from malware and from anyone who might inspect your computer to look at what you've been doing.
It's also a free software project, just like Tor, GPG, and OTR. That means the code is open source and can be peer reviewed, a level of transparency that makes the software resistant to backdoors, covert access points buried deep in the code.
On May 13, after creating a customized version of Tails for Greenwald, I hopped on my bike and pedaled to the FedEx office on Shattuck Avenue in Berkeley, where I slipped the Tails thumb drive into a shipping package, filled out a customs form that asked about the contents ("Flash Drive Gift," I wrote), and sent it to Greenwald in Brazil. He received the package two weeks later, it having been delayed in transit, for what I believed to be bureaucratic rather than nefarious reasons, and the blue thumb drive actually made a cameo appearance in "Citizenfour." For a technologist, this was a dream come true.

Snowden's Website

Near the end of May, I received an anonymous and encrypted email from an account called "verax," which is Latin for "truth teller." The writer told me that he was the same person I had been in touch with several months earlier. He had a new request.
Would I help him build a website that would launch a global petition against surveillance?
I still didn't know his name, where he was located, or what else he was up to, though clearly whatever he had going on with Poitras and Greenwald was sensitive. Because of my respect for them, I believed that anything they were going to this much trouble to accomplish was going to be worthwhile, so I agreed to build the site. I started using Tails in all my work with the contact, because I sensed that I had to take the highest security precautions possible. As Poitras had done with him in January, I created a new anonymous email account and GPG key just for communicating with him. He was glad that I did.

Got it. Good idea, btw. There are some issues with keys being used for fingerprinting as they move over the network.
He said he was writing an anti-surveillance manifesto that he wanted to post on the yet-to-be-named site, along with a petition that people could add their names to. The site would be unveiled once the journalists he was working with published their first stories. I had ample experience building privacy-respecting websites, including many online petitions for EFF. Among others, I built a petition against the draconian online copyright enforcement bill SOPA that sent more than a million emails to Congress. So this was familiar territory for me.
Working in Tails to remain anonymous while I developed the site, however, meant that this would be trickier than the web development I'd done in the past. I didn't have access to the latest browsers I was used to, and I didn't dare test the mobile version of the site on my smartphone. I also had concern that my coding style might betray my identity: my code for this project used similar commenting and naming conversions as other code I'd written in the past. Trying to develop software without your personal coding style is like trying to write an essay using someone else's voice. I was also concerned that the visual designs I was creating could be compared to my work in the past.
Snowden was even more worried about detection, though I didn't know it at the time. He expected to be quickly arrested and prevented from speaking for himself, and predicted that the government would use that silence to mischaracterize his intentions. To keep that from happening, Snowden decided to take a highly visible online stand against mass surveillance. Part of his plan included the petition website that he asked me to build.
On May 27, Snowden had his first encrypted conversation directly with Greenwald, who agreed to travel to Hong Kong with Poitras, funded by Guardian.
As my work on the site got underway, I had an encrypted chat with Poitras and mentioned what I was doing, though I didn't give her many details; just as I didn't need to know everything she was doing, she didn't need to know everything I was doing. She warned me to be extremely careful, and added that a very big story was in the works. I promised to be careful.
I was in a strange position. I was working with Snowden (whose name, in late May, I still didn't know) and I suspected he was a whistleblower working with Poitras, but I didn't know what he was blowing the whistle on, I didn't know a large volume of documents were involved, and I had no idea where he was located. I didn't know, for that matter, that Greenwald and Poitras would soon be heading to Hong Kong to meet him there. My ask-no-questions cluelessness was best for all concerned.
Days later, I was having an encrypted chat with Poitras, from our anonymous accounts, and she sounded excited. "You'll never guess where we are right now," I remember her writing. She didn't tell me where she was, of course, because I didn't need to know.
Snowden and I exchanged encrypted emails to discuss the site mockup and the site's functionality, and he let me know a bit of what was going on. "Just wanted to provide an update on the work out here," he emailed me on June 3. "Had an extremely productive meeting with two journalists today you may know, and will encounter a third tomorrow [Ewen MacAskill, a Guardian reporter who joined Greenwald and Poitras at the last moment]. After discussion, may hold off on the declaration for a few more days to give them time to work first."
He told me his name, so that I could attach his signature to the end of the manifesto. This was about a week before the rest of the world would learn who he was. Using Tor, I searched the internet for Edward Snowden, but I couldn't find anything. I checked LinkedIn, I checked Facebook, I think I even checked Twitter, and I found nothing. Who was this guy?
I learned more from the manifesto he sent me. It chilled my spine. He wrote about ubiquitous surveillance by not just the NSA but the intelligence agencies in the "Five Eyes" alliance: Britain, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the U.S. He wrote about privacy and the lack of accountability, and what this means to democracy around the world. I still didn't know exactly what he was leaking, but I could tell it would be big.
It turned out that he wasn't familiar with the subtleties of using Twitter in petition campaigns. Due to my work at EFF, I knew that one of the things that can make a campaign go viral is offering a pre-written tweet to people who sign your petition and allowing them to send that tweet from their own account with just a couple of clicks. People often post these tweets, and that's almost more helpful than their signatures since it vastly increases the campaign's visibility. I explained this to Snowden, and also explained that it was really important to have a good hashtag for the campaign. He got it immediately, thanked me for pointing this out, and suggested the following Twitter template:

Snowden decided that the site should be called supportonlinerights.com, and we got to work registering it and finding a hosting company. But we ran into trouble paying for the registration and hosting. Snowden was using his real name and email address (edsnowden@lavabit.com) and his own credit cards he was not yet an international fugitive but he was also using Tor, and this caused problems. Tor protects your identity by routing your web activity through a number of nodes, so that the site you are in touch with does not know your IP address or where you connect to the Internet from. But this creates a problem when you want to pay a bill, because the use of Tor can trigger fraud warnings with corporate payment departments, since Tor links your traffic to IP addresses that might be flagged as sources of abuse.
The company through which Snowden was registering his domain name and hosting his site, Dreamhost, initially rejected his credit cards. This led to a funny situation. Snowden, in his Hong Kong hotel room, wasn't just discussing government secrets with Greenwald, Poitras and MacAskill. He was also chatting online with customer support. Trying to troubleshoot these problems, I checked the complaint logs he had opened and noticed that he explained he was using Tor because he was traveling overseas and didn't trust the local ISPs. Eventually he prevailed and his credit cards were accepted. Here is the original registration record in the internet's "WHOIS" system:

I was a bit nervous at the time, and my wife was very nervous, because the government does not look kindly on whistleblowers and the people who work with them. For security reasons, we were in a bubble. I hadn't told any of my co-workers at EFF that I was building a website for a whistleblower. So there weren't a lot of people to turn to for advice or comfort. Nonetheless, I was quite excited, especially after Greenwald's first story was published on June 5, revealing a secret NSA program to collect massive amounts of domestic phone data. I finally knew what Snowden was leaking.
"Big news today, huh?" I emailed him. "How are you doing?"
He responded quickly.

Timing is everything on this, and we aren't close to finished. It's encouraging to see prominent civil rights organizations already calling for change, and I'm hopeful that maybe this time, things will be different.
Come Monday, people will have something to be angry about. I think that will be the day. Please feel free to criticize the draft as much as you'd like: it needs to be something people are willing to give words to their own feelings.
The next few days brought a blitz of headline-grabbing stories about NSA surveillance from Greenwald, Poitras, and MacAskill as well as the The Washington Post's Barton Gellman, who received documents from Snowden even though he hadn't made the risky trip to Hong Kong. On June 9, there was another thunderbolt: Greenwald, MacAskill, and Poitras broke the news that Edward Snowden was their source, releasing a 12-minute interview with him in which he explained his motivations.
At this point I was terrified. What if he got arrested and extradited to the U.S.? What if he were forced into solitary confinement for long stretches, as had happened to Chelsea Manning? What if he was tortured or killed?
I also worried about properly shepherding the project with which he had entrusted me. What was the contingency plan for the petition website? If he was arrested, should I unilaterally launch supportonlinerights.com?
"I hope you're safe and doing well," I emailed Snowden. "In case anything happened to you, what would you like me to do with the website?"
The site was ready to go. At the time, I was using the Declaration of Independence as a placeholder for the manifesto; for security reasons, I didn't want to load the manifesto until the launch. Here's what it looked like:

On the same day the interview was posted, Gellman published the "Verax" handle while Snowden was still using it. This caused me great concern. When Snowden reached out in late May asking me to build the petition website, he initially emailed my public email address from his Verax address. I had tried hard to have no traceable connection to Snowden, but now the FBI and NSA knew his handle and were, I believed, in a position to search their massive surveillance databases to find his full email address and perhaps the email addresses he had communicated with, including mine. While I knew that I hadn't broken any laws, I became worried that I would receive a knock on the door. I could deal with that the EFF is, after all, filled with lawyers but my wife was quite scared for me.
I was unable to concentrate on anything else as I waited to hear from Snowden. Due to Gellman's story, I wasn't sure whether he was still using his "Verax" address. (Gellman later told me that he didn't and doesn't think he put anyone at risk, and that he carefully weighed the decision to publish the "verax" handle.)
On June 13, after he had parted ways with Greenwald and Poitras and gone underground in Hong Kong, he finally emailed me.

Thank you again for all of your help and support. I'm sorry this has become so dangerous for everyone involved, but I suppose this is precisely what needed to be illustrated about our government. Let's hope people reign it back in.
We never launched the website. When it became clear that Snowden wasn't immediately getting arrested or prevented from communicating, and that the U.S. government wasn't forcibly denying the public an accurate understanding of what he did and what his motivations were, he decided the website was no longer necessary. He never wanted the story to be about himself anyway, preferring instead that the public debate stay focused on NSA spying.

Teaching Snowden's Lessons

After the dust settled, I sat down to write a simple tutorial for using the open source tools that allowed me, Poitras, Greenwald, and Snowden to communicate securely, and I ended up with a 30-page whitepaper called Encryption Works: How to Protect Your Privacy in the Age of NSA Surveillance. I took the name from Snowden's now-famous quote: "Encryption works. Properly implemented strong crypto systems are one of the few things that you can rely on. Unfortunately, endpoint security is so terrifically weak that NSA can frequently find ways around it."
The post-Snowden world is a different place. While the NSA and its allied spy agencies still have very little accountability, and while their leaders can still lie to Congress without consequence, they're no longer operating in the dark. The internet is enjoying a renaissance of security research to try to fix the major technical holes spy agencies have been exploiting for over a decade, and companies are demanding the right to protect the privacy of their users and to challenge gag orders. Lawsuits against NSA are finally moving through the courts, when before they were stalled.
In January 2014 Edward Snowden became the newest board member of Freedom of the Press Foundation, joining Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, as well as Poitras, Greenwald, myself, and others.
Snowden was right. I am proud of the role that I played in shining light on the global espionage apparatus.

Since my visit to Fremont CA in June to inspect the Mae Brussell papers at the home of Bob and Virginia McCullough, I have been working with Mae's daughter to secure a signed Gift Receipt to transfer the papers to Baylor. We cannot move them without a signed document.

Unfortunately, in my last exchange, the family requested that after we move the papers, our staff would remove all correspondence from/to Mae Brussell, all handwritten and typed analysis notes, , book drafts and outlines of Mae Brussell, photographs and documents pertaining to the family. In earlier conversations, we had talked about returning any personal family materials. Now with the addition of correspondence, analysis notes, book drafts and photographs, what would this leave of research value?

Having seen the materials, what would be left would be mostly photocopies of magazine articles and newspaper clippings. So I'm conflicted about the value of the large cost of moving the papers and then going through them looking for materials we need to return to the family. Would what is left be of interest to researchers if it is mostly magazine articles and news clippings? Isn't what researchers hoped for were her analysis notes and correspondence?

Nevertheless, I am still in touch with Mae's family and hope they see the value of leaving the materials together. Our library cannot devote one to two years processing materials that we are going to return to the donor. Neither would it be a good use of the resources which you have donated to move papers with decreased research value. So stay tuned. When there is a working agreement with the family, I'll let you know. I haven't given up yet.

On Google, you can find specialized tabs that only search all sorts of specific results, like news articles, images, patents, and scientific studies. The Declassification Engine is an ambitious project that aims to help citizens search for and uncover one very particular sort of result: U.S. government secrets.

The project, based out of Columbia University and launched about a year ago, uses advanced computer science methods in big data, machine learning, and natural language processing to scale up what some scholars have been struggling to do by hand for a decade: Document the rise of government secrecy, learn more about what the government isn't releasing, and uncover new patterns and information in the millions of documents that do get declassified but contain heavy redactions.
Without more accountability, the historians, statisticians, computer scientists, and lawyers involved in the Declassification Engine project fear that our past will be "shredded in secrecy."
"People have always complained about official secrecy, but over time there's been measurable growth in the government secrets that are created," says Columbia University historian Matthew Connelly, the co-leader of the project. "The whole system is breaking down."

Today, to actually review the classified documents being created every year would demand the full-time work of every single federal and state government employee in the country, the project's site says. The National Declassification Center has a current and rather hopeless backlog of 370 million pages of documents, and the government spends $10 billion protecting its secrets. It allocates only $50 million to declassification work.

The Redaction Archive is another tool that is turning up matches of redacted and unredacted documents side-by-side to uncover what's beneath the black marker.The tools that the Declassification Engine have created thus far offer a glimpse into why the overabundance of secrecy hurts American democracy.
Their first mission was to gather as many declassified documents as possible into one database. The National Archives and other government troves are one source of information. But researchers have also collected others, such as scanned and full-text documents from private database companies like ProQuest and Gale Cengage Learning. Researchers involved in the project are now working with the Internet Archive to analyze the millions of PDFs that group has scraped from government sites since 1996. It also hopes to incorporate the results of FOIA requests, which are housed in online reading rooms of government agencies.
From this work, programmers and scientists are now starting to create apps, tools, and visualizations that will help others do analysis and searches.
Often, for example, the government posts declassified documents in different places and at different timeswhich means the redactions can differ. The Redaction Archive is turning up matches of redacted and unredacted documents side-by-side to uncover where they differ. This reveals the unknown text (like one sentence redacted from a 1969 memo from Henry Kissinger to Nixon which read: "In Israel, preasures [sic] will increase to deploy strategic missiles and nuclear weapons."), and it will also help academics to do large-scale pattern analysis of the "logic" of redaction. A "Redactometer" under development will measure the number of redactions in documents being released, to try to provide a degree of accountability to the process.
"The Sphere of Influence" is a massive visualization of the State Department's early electronic diplomatic cables from 1973 to 1976 (the government hasn't yet released subsequent years). It seeks spatial patterns in the million declassified cables and also at the metadata, such as the "to" and "from" fields and certain topic words, from still-classified cables.
Secrets are the coin of the realm of government. It's what people trade to get what they need.One area of development is an accurate model that will try to predict which embassy a cable came from based on the language and topics used. "What's interesting is the 2%when it can't accurately classify a cable. It means the cable is off-topic. What's interesting about these off-topic cables is they tend to be classified a secret," Connolly says. "Someone who is dealing with a million cables and they don't even know where to beginit's a way to start."
Already, there have been new insights from these tools. The research found that cables with the word "Boulder" in the subject or file name were 130 times more likely to be withheld from the public's eye. Connolly found out this term referred to "Operation Boulder," a little known program that existed in the 1970s that subjected Arabic visa applicants to an FBI investigation and that the Bush administration went to greater lengths to keep secret after 9/11. After learning about Operation Boulder through the Declassification Engine project, historians have delved in deeper and produced an exhibitabout the secret program.
The Declassification Engine project, which is really just getting started, aims to help both researchers, journalists, and citizens, but also hopes to help the government itself prioritize and speed-up its declassification backlog. An advisory board has been set up to make sure the "big data" processing proceeds with caution and doesn't tread too far into the realm of secrets that, for valid reasons, should be kept as such.
"Secrets are the coin of the realm of government. It's what people trade to get what they need, whether that's access or other information. Because there's not a penalty to over classification, you get this built-in inflationary pressure where the currency of classification gets debased," says Connelly. Releasing this pressure is clearly one motivation for the Bradley Mannings and Edward Snowdens of the world, he notes. But the Declassification Engine and other forms of more measured accountability could work, too.

Mae Brussell was my mentor and my friend for over 15 years before her death in 1988. She was a California housewife who was deeply affected by the assassination of President Kennedy and she began to clip papers and study it from the start. Eventually, she would compile over 1,800 pages of cross-reference indexing of the Warren Commission Report and 26 volumes of evidence. She clipped 15 daily newspapers, read over 150 periodicals a month, and over 500 books a year breaking down the ongoing illegal, covert and deadly activities of an invisible government that took charge of America in the aftermath of the successful coup d'etat of November 22, 1963.

I first contacted Mae after the Watergate break-in. I had been studying the JFK assassination since 1967. I recognized all five of the names in the newspaper of the men arrested that night, since they had been part of the Bay of Pigs and some of them testified to the Warren Commission. All of them had ties to the CIA. Two weeks after the break-in, Mae got out the first issue of her "Conspiracy Newsletter" in Paul Krassner's The Realist magazine, with her groundbreaking article, "Why Was Martha Mitchell Kidnapped?", outlining the command structure of the Watergate crimes all the way to the White House. She included a second piece about President Nixon's connection to the Nazis. I called her immediately since we were on the same track. That led to years of phone calls and sharing new items in the news.

Mae did a radio show called "Dialogue Conspiracy" and later "World Watchers International" every week for over 17 years. She had over 6,000 books on real history, 42 four-drawer filing cabinets filled with her clippings by category, hundreds of video and audio tapes, and thousands of pages of her own notes and source sheets. She exposed the movement of thousands of Nazi war criminals, scientific and weapons experts and spies into the United States and around the world after WWII and their role in the Cold War and the Military Industrial Intelligence Complex that grew here along with permanent war. I subscribed to her show on weekly cassettes and started a group to listen to them called "Brussell Sprouts". Mae once said she should not say she was a researcher but a psychic, then everyone would love her. She was good at predicting things from the trails she followed. She passed Rose Kennedy a note in Los Angeles on June 1 telling her that the forces that killed John were moving on Bobby Kennedy. Three days before the Chappaquiddick incident, Mae warned Mary Joe Kopechne's parents that she would be killed. Astounding unless you understand the connections Mae's indefatigueable research unearthed.

Mae's work was ahead of its time and some of her tapes still resonate in current events and operations. Her files are the best assassination research collection and anti-fascist collection in the world. I inherited them briefly after her death on her request that I found the Mae Brussell Research Center in Santa Cruz, CA and continue her work. Due to financial obstacles and lots of personal obstruction by others who knew her, I eventually was forced to abandon the project. The files went into storage for decades. The most recent owner put out feelers for a new home for them, and then suffered a stroke. Mae's family has agreed to have the files archived at the W. R. Poage Legislative Library at Baylor University in Waco, TX which houses the research files of Penn Jones, Jr., Dick Russell, Robert Cutler and many other JFK assassination experts.

Ben Rogers, the archivist at the Poage Library, has the equipment, the students and the expertise to clean, organize and restore Mae's collection of materials and to digitize them for widespread use. The library has a limited budget, and needs to raise $6,000 to secure the materials, move and store them. I am working to help this happen. I feel personally responsible for the preservation of these files and have regretted my decision to let them out of my control for years. So far, I have raised $2,000 of the total. The balance is a very cheap price to restore the invaluable information that Mae's genius and hard work organized to understand modern history. Nothing like this archive exists.

THE PREFERRED WAY
There is NO preferred way to use this list. Some people send emails to their Congressional Representatives and CC (copy) all the media email addresses.
Other people prefer to BCC (Blind copy) the email addresses. The reason for this is because they want whoever is reading the email to actually READ what they have to say! With thousands of email addresses appearing BEFORE the actual message, it is less likely the Congressional staffer will ever read the email, therefore your email may NEVER be counted!
If you want to let your Congressional Representatives know that you have also emailed the media, you can now include the link to this page and write a p.s. at the bottom of your email telling them you have BCC'd the email to thousands of media people!

From old favorites like The Difficult Road to Mars: A Brief History of Mars Exploration in the Soviet Union and Wind Tunnels of NASA to experimental work like Aerospace Food Technology and Life in the Universe: Proceedings of a conference held at NASA Ames Research Center Moffet Field, California, June 19-20, 1979, this is one of the best collections of space arcana you're likely to find.
Who could resist Exploring Space With a Camera? Or Rockets and People, the autobiography of rocket designer Boris Chertok and a key history of the Soviet space program?
These books were placed online over the last decade, so some of the formatting leaves something to be desired. Many of the works have been broken up into tiny pieces, forcing one to click through page after page. But this is a singular information repository, a storehouse for our fascination with flight.
What these works also show is how central the space program made and found itself during the 20th century. NASA could convene PIllsbury and the chefs on nuclear submarines to talk about food. Computing and solar energy were both pushed along by NASA's interest. The Space Race was a proxy skirmish in the Cold War. And, of course, all sorts of ideas from the era leaked into the way NASA thought about things: freedom and America and gender and aesthetics and the future.
Oh, and don't miss a personal favorite, We Freeze to Please: A History of NASA's Icing Research Tunnel and the Quest for Safety. A page turner.

Who could resist Exploring Space With a Camera? Or Rockets and People, the autobiography of rocket designer Boris Chertok and a key history of the Soviet space program?
These books were placed online over the last decade, so some of the formatting leaves something to be desired. Many of the works have been broken up into tiny pieces, forcing one to click through page after page. But this is a singular information repository, a storehouse for our fascination with flight.
What these works also show is how central the space program made and found itself during the 20th century. NASA could convene PIllsbury and the chefs on nuclear submarines to talk about food. Computing and solar energy were both pushed along by NASA's interest. The Space Race was a proxy skirmish in the Cold War. And, of course, all sorts of ideas from the era leaked into the way NASA thought about things: freedom and America and gender and aesthetics and the future.
