Where do you think the Brazilian's got all those routines from in the first place Magda?

When I wear my shocking pink polo shirt, bright lemon trousers, white shoes and Irish green cap on the first tee, it is customary to execute a crip walk followed by a pop, tick and hit and rounded off with a bunkhouse bounce. After that I have to go and sit down for 10 minutes and drink a large lemonade. Obviously.

Meanwhile, I am very disappointed that what I thought was Jazz, wasn't.

Consequently, I've done some additional research...

So, let's hit it!

Magda,

Thank you for that Sarah Vaughan recording!
I first heard her remarkable voice when I was in
college at the U of Chicago, and listening to
Dave Garroway's radio program of jazz music
at midnight as he promoted Sarah Vaughan,
a local Chicago talent. She was at the beginning
of her career then.

And I met her at a nightclub where she was
performing when I was on a date with a jazz
musician who knew her. Her voice was so
melodious even when she spoke....

Thank you, Magda. Yes, I guess those times and places were interesting and historic in many ways, although at the time I didn't notice that. It was the post-war period and there were many changes happening, such as the realization that we were part of a larger community than just the US - there was the rest of the world. All sorts of social rumblings of civil rights and women's movements were straining to bring the earlier efforts of the 19th Century to completion, a still an ongoing process. Popular music was having its own revolution, and new jazz forms were coming into being with new musical scales, new uses of instruments, new voices. The jazz musicians were playing what I would call 'protest' music against the established traditions of life in America. That was Be-Bop and modern jazz played by talented and sophisicated musicians, many of whom were trained in classical music, but played jazz for a living and for the joy of it.

And may I add a list of songs by Sarah to which you can listen, to the wonderful selections you provided?

http://www.whosdatedwho.com/tpx_56233/sarah-vaughan/songs

Jim, it's a very long list, and I thought you might enjoy having access to it, along with Magda's selections.

Such an affront as Hegel and Blavitsky and Hate requires an antidote.

While looking through some of my music for some thing suitably tacky to post for the Max Bygrave vid I came across this. I should have used this in response to Jan's 'Scary Monsters and Super Creeps' by Bowie instead of Lily Allen. It is a Chilean group playing in the US in 1986 but the song was written in 1975. They were still in exile as their music was banned by Pinochet and their friend and fellow musician Victor Jara was murdered by the military for his music. The word Malembe refers to a Voodoo god. For the workers and good honest people it is a good god but for the bad people of the world it is a bad god. The song is basically an incantation to the god to give it to the generals in Chile and fascists everywhere. Anyway, it is great fun and catchy and I like Malembe, both the song and the Voodoo god
Rough translation for the non Spanish speakers:
Here I bring my Malembe
to give it hard and strong,
to these four generals
that have caused so much death.

Malembe, Malembe,
Oh, Malembe, Malembe.
To finish Malembe, Malembe.
For traitors, Malembe, Malembe.
For the fascists, Malembe, Malembe.
For gorillas, Malembe, Malembe.

Malembe is a good thing
for fair and honest
but it is evil and pernicious
for all evil.

Malembe is alive
it is in workers
there will be no escaping momio (mummies is colloquial for reactionaries)
when they fall traitors.

Here is another Ozzie classic. I was going to post this after your Itsy Bitsy Tiny Polka Dot Bikini video but good taste prevailed. It's morning now and I haven't yet had my tea so I am posting it now. It is our very own Sir Robert Helpmann. Doyen of the ballet and opera and high camp and best known for his partnership with Margot Fonteyn in the Sadler's Wells ballet company. Here he totally out of character and unconvincingly doing a surfer song and dance. Maybe he was broke and needed the cash. But can't imagine it was a big earner for him some how:
