I've spent a lot of time going through Harold Weisberg's archives, and there's a tremendous amount of old articles and newsletters preserved there. The Search feature is pretty poor, so here are some links. Hope there are no copyright issues.

An article Harold Weisberg wrote for the National Enquirer, which apparently wasn't published. It's mostly about the Bremer attempt on George Wallace, but it covers other cases as well.
http://jfk.hood.edu/Collection/Weisberg%20Subject%20Index%20Files/N%20Disk/National%20Enquirer/Item%2035.pdf

"Is some tight conspiracy - some supersecret SMERSH-like cabal - knocking off our political leaders? We can't know - and we don't. But were it the case, the first effort of the conspirators would be to hide all evidence pointing to them - even to their existence.

With the recent attempt on the life of Presidential aspirant George Corley Wallace, the old, haunting conspiracy question, inevitably comes up again. People want to know, but there really is no way to answer the question directly and responsibly. If the question is "Can it be?" then the answer is "Yes".

Going back to what for today is a primitive time, my own World War II experience in the Office of Strategic Services - forerunner of the CIA - I do know that we were expert in such matters. Assassination techniques even then were refined to the point where we had secretly printed, limited edition texts on how to kill without getting caught, without leaving traces. Simple and effective as were the assassination methd of 30 years ago, they are kidstuff compared to the real-life James Bondery of all modern intelligence services.

Do they kill? Almost certainly without exception - all of them. There is almost nothing all intelligence agencies do not do. CIA and military assassinations in Southeast Asia are no longer secret. The CIA's French counterpart, SDECE, long an international smuggler to finance itself, has been caught trafficking in heroin. With CIA active and tacit help, so have most Southeast Asian governments. Americans are their victims."

A synopsis of The AM/LASH Legacy - a novel by David Atlee Phillips, perhaps an attempt at a limited hang-out.

Tracy, the third item from the top of the photos of the building at Camp and Lafayette Streets in New Orleans shows a doorway numbered 529. It looks like it is on the Camp Street side. If it is part of that building, wasn't the Camp Street entrance 544 Camp Street? I can't make out where the Lafayette Street corner is, so could this be another building in Camp all together? If it is, shouldn't the number be an even number, not an iodd number?

Adele, I'm really not sure how the building was laid out, or how the addresses work in an old city like New Orleans. Some of the photos are not labeled, which makes it harder. You should look through the whole collection; I can't give you a direct link to it, but here's the path.

Wow Tracy. What a treat to see all these issues of Clandestine America. I was in law school during HSCA and my ex boyfriend AIB co-founder and member Harvey used to send me these. It was my lifeline to the hearings.
Lovely that Weisberg saved them. I have some, but have moved so many times since those heady days and much has been lost. I'd love to see Probe here too but that is Jim's call.

ps When Carl Oglesby was writing on this subject in 1992 he was also having some serious medical issues, and had come under the spell of Robert Blakey. It was very sad for me to see my dear friend suddenly spouting "Mob did it" bullshit. His medical condition was affecting his once beyond- great intellect. He did recover and in the years before his untimely death he no longer embraced the Mob views of Prof. Blakey.

I'm glad they've scanned Weisberg's files, but I wish they were organized a little better. Oh well, we can't have everything.

As for Oglesby, his YANKEE AND COWBOY WAR made it clear that he considered the "Mob" to just be one of the factions of the whole shadow government. I used to argue with Robert Harris that the "Mob" is not some organization completely separate from the rest of the government/corporate world/national security state.

Yankee and Cowboy war was such an important book. Only got one printing.
Back in 06 Simkin at the Ed forum was scanning it so that it would be free to all. With Carl's permission and approval.
Sadly he ceased about one third into the project.

Weisberg was always careful not to "speculate" about who the conspirators were, but in his unpublished manuscript for Whitewash VI, he finally came pretty close:

"How can mature people consider what we have just seen and not wonder if there had been a military conspiracy to get rid of the President or a multi-faceted conspiracy that required the burning of those autopsy materials as soon as it was known that Oswald was killed and there would be no trial at which the autopsy materials would have to be produced and subjected to cross examination?"

"Aside from the grossest improprieties in taking over a medicolegal function required to be completely independent, especially when that is an inquest into how a President was assassinated, can this threatening, this ordering of what must be left out or altered, do other than feed conspiratorial belief about the involvement of the military in some kind of plot?"

"That a "red" was the assassin was automatically widely accepted, particularly by the major media during those days of the "cold war" that Kennedy was trying to end."

http://jfk.hood.edu/Collection/Weisberg%20Subject%20Index%20Files/N%20Disk/National%20Security%20Agency/Item%2005.pdf

So secret, so sensitive is the NSA mission and so highly indoctrinated are its personnel, that the Agency, twenty years after its creation, remains virtually unknown to those employees outside the intelligence community. The few times its men have been involved in international incidents, NSA's name has been kept out of the papers.

Nevertheless, the first American killed in Vietnam, near what became the main NSA base at Phu Bai, was an NSA operative. And the fact that Phu Bai remains the most heavily guarded of all U.S. bases suggests that an NSA man may well be the last.
