The policeman is being investigated by anti-corruption detectives, Portuguese TV station TVI reported.

National Republican Guard (GNR) officers searched the apartment and area around the McCanns’ holiday flat in Praia da Luz before the investigation was taken over by the Judicial Police.

The GNR was later criticised for destroying potential clues by trampling through the crime scene, contaminating the area.

The television station, which did not name the corporal under investigation, said several payments were made into two accounts in the officer’s name “shortly after Maddie’s disappearance”.

The TV channel said the policeman denied knowing anything about the money and suggested his name may have been used without his know-ledge to open the accounts.

Police sources said he is known as an honest officer.

Costa Lima, spokesman for the GNR, told newspaper 24 Horas: “We have not opened any investigation into any officer involved in the Maddie case, nor do we have knowledge of any other body investigating anyone.”

Madeleine, now six, disappeared while on a family holiday on the Algarve.

Her parents Gerry and Kate, both 41, doctors from Rothley, Leics, have launched a campaign to find her.

How does one not know about a huge deposit into one's bank account?

£100k eh? That's a serious bribe.

Current UK reports are focusing on Raymond Hewlett, a known predatory paedophile, who was allegedly in the Algarve at the time.

The former Scots Guardsman, trawlerman and fairground worker has been repeatedly jailed for a series of violent sexual offences against young girls.

Once featured on a Crimestoppers list of most wanted paedophiles, he is currently wanted for questioning by British police forces for the indecent assault of a young girl more than 30 years ago.

Several years ago Irish officers investigating a series of attempted abductions were seeking Hewlett, who had been posing as an undercover police officer to search for young girls or befriend their families to gain access to children.

Hewlett is one of 38 paedophiles known to have been - or still be - in the Algarve when Madeleine vanished from her holiday apartment in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007.

Paedophile Raymond Hewlett has allegedly said he saw Madeleine McCann twice before she vanished.

The Briton, 62, has previously insisted he was miles from Praia da Luz in the Portuguese Algarve when the three-year-old went missing in May 2007.

But yesterday he reportedly implied he had been close enough to see Maddie's distinctive flaw in her right eye

However, if the Portuguese investigating police officer was really paid £100,000, then poor Madeleine McCann wasn't simply fodder for scum like Hewlett.

£100k would be protection money for the kind of corrupt power networks that Joel van der Reijden investigates at his crucial and courageous site:

That's my take too Jan.

Not an individual paedo but a very powerful and influential group were responsible. Like the Portuguese paedophile group that reaches to the highest echelons of Portuguese society that includes senior members of the government, police, media, judiciary and on and on.

Ditto Jersey, ditto Belgium, Ditto Northern Ireland, Ditto Islington in London, ditto Washington in the good' USA, ditto NATO headquarters in Brussels. The list goes on and on.
