Phil: What is your source for that quote? Keepng in mind that Gonzalez was one of the first driving forces behind HSCA, I have never accepted the reasons for his leaving. Seems too superficial given his early drive- (early 70's)- and committment. We understand what happened to Richard Sprague, HSCA's first Chief Counsel, largely from Gaeton Fonzi's account in The Last Investigation. Fonzi addresses Gonzales' departure as well, but all accounts have left me with many more questions than answers. Your post adds one more question.

I had always hoped to travel to San Antonio and try to interview Gonzales about this matter. Work and other committments prevented such. I wonder if he ever discussed this with his son of the same name.
Is anyone aware of any books or articles where Gonzales' bares his soul on his role in and exit from HSCA? Especially their bs findings, under cover-up artist Blakey.

It is my profound hope that Stone- or someone- makes this book into a film.
The one thing I would have added regarding the "why it matters" would have been to tie it in more to today, connect the dots from Jerry Ford, Warren Commissioner. (and evidence tampering criminal), to President, appointing Bush head of CIA, leading to Reagan Justice Dept. ignoring HSCA's proposal that they investigate CIA (etc.) role in the coup,
down to W and where we are now: Preemptive wars, very, very far from the peace that JFK had forged. Douglas masterfully proves once and for all that had JFK lived there would have been no war in VietNam, that the Cold War was over. No wonder bookstores are not selling this book. Thank God for Amazon and of course Andy, from whom I will purchase more copies of this book when we are in Dallas for the conference. When I learned that Jim Douglas would be keynoting that sealed the deal for me to make it this year.

I hope Obama makes time to read this book. It may change his life. And if he were to act accordingly, it could also end it.

In my search I found this pull quote on line but not in the several book indexes I checked.

I see that its appearance on the Palamara page under the Underwood entry does not attribute the source to be Underwood.

I have reread Fonzi twice and haven't clarified Gonzalez' role between Sprague and Blakey.

I see Gonzalez' three-page Foreword in the 1992 revised edition of Weberman/Canfield's Coup d'Etat in America. Paragraph Two:

"I had tried to dissuade the White House schedulers from including Dallas on the itinerary because of the climate of hate which prevailed there at the time against the President. But then Democratic Governor John Connally told us in the Democratic Congressional delegation the purpose of the trip was to raise funds for the 1964 Presidential election. So, after San Antonio, I continued with the Presidential party to Houston and then to Dallas where the President died."

The pull quote re "taken care of" remains unattributed, tantalizingly so.

I had years ago tired of seeing the supposed Yamamoto "sleeping giant" quote used as genuine, so sought to find the instance of his having said it--and every road led to the 1970 film Tora! Tora! Tora!

Clearly one Democrat congressman had concerns for the president. I think the question I've sensed Charles positing is, "Was the Chicago kabuki for the purpose of numbing the victim before the sting?"

Gonzalez remained a skeptic at least through his 1992 Foreword, having been first moved to doubt by items he enumerates: 1) Agnew matter 1973; 2) Watergate hearings 1974; 3) and the retrospective:

"Also, I couldn't understand how an 'expert gunman' like Oswald could miss his target when he had a clear shot at General Edwin Walker shortly before November 22, 1963."

Myra i think memory here :willy: it refers to a wrong assumption re the mototcycle escort in dallas that was cut back and or the fact imo that he had supposedly told the ss not to ride on the back of the limo as hill did and others many times before him.the lnrs such as mcadams use it to try to prove their point that he...cut back his own security and WAS THEREFORE RESP..:motz:.not those who were in charge of such.and did re the ss as they also cut back the number of dpd motorcycle escorts in dallas they told their ,ss men not to ride on the back of the limo..i will have a look tomorrow there is the doc...within vince's work it is there..that jfk did not.. The ss bosses did...so for now..
