Background on the Jim Garrison Papers
Earling Carothers "Jim" Garrison was the District Attorney for the City of New Orleans, Louisiana from 1961 until 1973. He investigated and prosecuted Clay Shaw for conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy and he was portrayed in Oliver Stone's film, JFK. The JFK Collection contains three series of records relating primarily to Garrison.
- Lyon Garrison donated approximately 16,000 pages of his fathers papers to the Collection. This series is arranged alphabetically by subject and consists of records kept at the home of Jim Garrison pertaining to his investigation of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. The records include information pertaining to Garrison's prosecution of Clay Shaw, as well as other subjects or individuals connected to the assassination, the trial of Clay Shaw, or of interest to Garrison.
- The official investigative records produced by Garrison as New Orleans District Attorney were provided to the Collection pursuant to a subpoena served to the current District Attorney of New Orleans, Harry F. Connick, Sr. This series contains records in a variety of media-- including textual, photographic, and audio/visual.
- Pursuant to subpoena, the Assassination Records Review Board also acquired for the Collection the original transcripts from the Orleans Parish Grand Jury Special Investigation conducted by Garrison.
For questions about these records or copying information, please write to the Special Access and FOIA Staff at the National Archives at College Park, Room 6350, 8601 Adelphi Road, College Park, MD 20740-6001, or call (301) 837-3190, or e-mail: specialaccess_foia@nara.gov.
