Ahmed Wali Karzai, half brother to the Afghan president and one of the most powerful men in the country, has been killed by one of his own bodyguards.
"I confirm that Ahmad Wali was killed inside his house," Zalmay Ayoubi, a spokesman for the governor of Kandahar province, told the Reuters news agency.
Wali Karzai was shot dead by Sardar Mohammad, a bodyguard who regularly visited him, another member of the security team told Al Jazeera.
Mohammad shot Wali Karzai in the stomach and chest as he emerged from a bathroom and was then shot and killed by other bodyguards, the man said.
Wali Karzai was the head of the Kandahar provincial council, but his power extended far further in Afghan business, politics and security. He has been described in various media reports as a "warlord" involved in drug smuggling and as a paid asset of the Central Intelligence Agency.
"He was effectively the super governor of southern Afghanistan," said Al Jazeera's James Bays, who met Wali Karzai on multiple occasions and has reported extensively from the country.
Bays said the Taliban was "almost certainly" responsible for Wali Karzai's killing, which comes two weeks after a spectacular attack by the hardline Islamic movement on the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul that left 19 people dead.
In response to Karzai's killing, police mobilised a massive response in Kandahar city, according to Kabul-based journalist Matthieu Aikins, who spoke to a resident. Checkpoints were "locked down," helicopters hovered overhead, and the road to the hospital, where Wali Karzai's body was taken, was blocked off, Aikins wrote on Twitter.
Ehsanullah Amiri, a TOLO news producer, wrote on Twitter that a journalist from his network was reporting that Wali Karzai's killer was being held in the hospital.
Rumours of Wali Karzai's involvement in Afghanistan's opium trade have circulated in Afghanistan for years. In 2008, the New York Times reported that the White House, State Department and Central Intelligence Agency had received reports that linked him to the drug business and that they tried to convince Hamid Karzai, the president, to move his brother out of power.
A year later, the Times reported that Wali Karzai had received regular payments from the CIA for the previous eight years, in part to fund an Afghan paramilitary force that operated at the CIA's direction.
"[Wali Karzai's] assassination is a big loss for the president as he helped hold the greater Kandagar region togetherm," Saad Mohseni, the director of the large media group that owns TOLO, wrote on Twitter.

Ahmed Wali Karzai, Brother of Afghan President, Killed by Trusted Guard
July 12th, 2011
I don't know if this assassination has anything to do with Ahmed Karzai's links to heroin trafficking, but here's an excerpt from a 2008 New York Times piece that's pretty interesting
( http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/world/...han.html):
When Afghan security forces found an enormous cache of heroin hidden beneath concrete blocks in a tractor-trailer outside Kandahar in 2004, the local Afghan commander quickly impounded the truck and notified his boss.
Before long, the commander, Habibullah Jan, received a telephone call from Ahmed Wali Karzai, the brother of President Hamid Karzai, asking him to release the vehicle and the drugs, Mr. Jan later told American investigators, according to notes from the debriefing obtained by The New York Times. He said he complied after getting a phone call from an aide to President Karzai directing him to release the truck.
Two years later, American and Afghan counternarcotics forces stopped another truck, this time near Kabul, finding more than 110 pounds of heroin. Soon after the seizure, United States investigators told other American officials that they had discovered links between the drug shipment and a bodyguard believed to be an intermediary for Ahmed Wali Karzai, according to a participant in the briefing.
The assertions about the involvement of the president's brother in the incidents were never investigated, according to American and Afghan officials, even though allegations that he has benefited from narcotics trafficking have circulated widely in Afghanistan.

The half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai was assassinated by a trusted local security official Tuesday, a political killing that was immediately claimed by the Taliban and makes grimly clear the vulnerability of Afghan officials as the United States prepares to reduce its military presence.
Ahmed Wali Karzai head of Kandahar's provincial council and widely considered the most powerful man in southern Afghanistan was meeting with tribal elders and politicians in his heavily fortified home in downtown Kandahar city Tuesday morning, according to two people at the house at the time.
Sardar Mohammad, a longtime confidant and commander of the police post near Karzai's ancestral home, arrived and requested a private discussion, officials said. Karzai and Mohammad left for another room, and soon three gunshots rang out.
Agha Lalai Destegeri, the deputy provincial council chief, said he rushed in to find Karzai shot in the head, chest and hand.
Karzai's other guards entered the room and shot and killed Mohammad, officials said. A bleeding Karzai was driven by his entourage a short distance across town to Mirwais Hospital, but he did not survive, Destegeri and other Afghan officials said.

Bodyguard who killed Karzai's brother was trusted CIA contact By Julius Cavendish in Kabul, 16 July 2011, http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/...14580.html
Quote:The bodyguard who assassinated President Hamid Karzai's brother had been working closely with US Special Forces and the CIA before he was recruited by the Taliban, raising fears over the Islamist movement's increasingly sophisticated intelligence apparatus which has managed to threaten the inner circles of power in Afghanistan.
Sardar Mohammad, who shot Ahmed Wali Karzai at his home in Kandahar City on Tuesday, also held regular meetings with British officials, and had two brothers-in-law serving in a CIA-run paramilitary unit, the Kandahar Strike Force, the Washington Post reported yesterday.
Yet evidence is emerging that the Taliban recruited Mohammad who was believed to be a friend, confidant and trusted lieutenant of Ahmed Wali Karzai in an infiltration of the Afghan government's security apparatus.
"Our investigation shows that for the last three months he was acting out of character, not normal, erratic," said Mahmoud Karzai, another Karzai brother. "He wasn't sleeping, he was nervous, he was getting phone calls in the middle of the night, and our information shows he made a trip to Quetta [in Pakistan] and met with some Taliban. His father was a mullah. So all these things combined, plus the Taliban claim of responsibility... but our preliminary investigation indicates this was the work of the Taliban."
Security analysts say that, if true, it shows not only the problems facing the Afghan army and police as they start taking control of the country from Nato, but also how sophisticated Taliban intelligence operations have become.

Christer - good find.
You've got to love the interpretation of these facts (my bold):

Of course the alternative interpretation is that bodyguard Sardar Mohammad was still CIA/British intel. :mexican:

Afghanis, no matter what their political or religious feelings/beliefs are all highly patriotic and pro-independence, free from all foreign domination of any kind. Many of the fighters, intel agents, and others are double, triple and more-agents. How they act at any time is some combination of how they have been maneuvered/forced and their own internal beliefs for how best to have a free-Afghanistan, IMO. They got rid of the Russians and will do the same with the NATO/USA/UK invaders. Sadly, they will pay a very high price for this totally unnecessary imperialist venture. We back the wrong sides, and the people know it. They also know our real motives....more than do the Sheeple at home.
I could see provocations being run by Western Intelligence, to make their opposite numbers look bad. This is all part of the games played in Deep Politics. On most of these individual killings, the motives - real motives - will likely not ever be known to us. On the aggregate, the picture is much clearer.

Gimme a Break: The CIA Asset Turned Taliban Bodyguard Assassin?!
Saturday, 16. July 2011
Spin the Spin to Get the Spun Story Un-Spun
I said I was not going to waste time writing about the Ahmed Wali Karzai assassination story and let the stenographers in our media spread the preapproved nonsense. I wrote my piece and provided you with my own humble two cents, and I was ready to move on:
…on the other hand, once things sour, when those liabilities begin to surpass the asset and the profits, you'll see the media rush and begin swarming around the no-longer-a-favorite Kingpin. Then comes a short period of silence, and after that Bam: You have an assassinated, murdered, suicide-d, or disappeared Old Kingpin case. Alas; no surprise there since this is how these Kingpins ultimately meet their end- this one supposedly' by the currently fashionable enemy: the Taliban. I promise you won't be hearing a single word about this in a few days and forever-The Langley Way.
…
The entire scenario of a Taliban-Turned confidante bodyguard didn't sit well with me; way too Langley. When you get a chance read a bit about the assassination of Vietnam's Diem Brothers, and then you'll understand what I mean when I say Too Langley.'
Anyhow, this morning I read the following headline: Bodyguard Who Killed Karzai's Brother Was Trusted CIA Contact :
The bodyguard who assassinated President Hamid Karzai's brother had been working closely with US Special Forces and the CIA …
Everything made sense up to this point, but then came the following sentences:
…before he was recruited by the Taliban, raising fears over the Islamist movement's increasingly sophisticated intelligence apparatus which has managed to threaten the inner circles of power in Afghanistan.
…
Utter nonsense; that is, if you start adding 2 and 2 and another 2, and then check the result against the one presented to you by the media. Let's add up a few twos here:
-We know that Ahmed Wali Karzai was a CIA operative and trusted asset for years.
-We know that the CIA relationship- aka working arrangement soured with Ahmed Wali Karzai around 2008, so he was outed by Langley.
-We know that Ahmed Wali Karzai had a pretty good relationship with a certain group of Taliban figure-heads and was pro dialogue with the Taliban.
-We know that Ahmed Karzai's bodyguard, Sardar Mohammad, spent years as a CIA trusted asset and US ally.
-We know that Karzai's Bodyguard was a well-know Taliban Foe and played an important role as a snitch reporting on Taliban and helping with their arrest.
Here is what the above twos add up to:
The known Taliban Foe CIA Asset assassinates former CIA Asset-Operative whose relationship with the CIA had soured, and who had relationships and dialogue with certain Taliban figureheads.
And here is the add up by the media:
The bodyguard turned out of the blue into a Taliban and assassinated former US operative who turned out to be a drug kingpin Ahmed Wali Karzai.
Now it is your turn. Please go ahead and do the math.

Petraeus is moving from Afghanistan to CIA as I write.
