Joe Paterno has reached out to a prominent Washington criminal defense lawyer to represent him in the Penn State sex abuse case, a source close to the case told NBC News.
J. Sedgwick Sollers, who once represented President George H.W. Bush in the Iran-Contra affair, was contacted by Paterno's advisers on Thursday. But Sollers has not yet met with Paterno, and a formal retainer agreement has not been signed.

Just when you thought the Penn State child sex-abuse scandal couldn't possibly get any worse, we may have just scratched the surface. Joe Paterno being fired could be just the start of arguably the biggest downfall in the history of college athletics.
Pittsburgh radio personality Mark Madden, who penned a column for the Beaver County Times back in April of this year named "Sandusky a State secret," a column which foreshadowed the recent scandal which has absolutely gutted those of us in the Penn State family, was a guest on the Dennis & Callahan Morning Show on WEEI sports talk radio out of Boston on Thursday morning. During his appearance, Madden, who has been mostly right regarding this issue from the very start, dropped what can only be called a bombshell, an announcement which could mean far more than the end of Joe Paterno's career.
Madden stated that two "prominent columnists" are currently investigating a rumor that Jerry Sandusky's Second Mile Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed to serve underprivileged youths, was "pimping out young boys to rich (Penn State) donors." Madden went on to say that Jerry Sandusky was told by those running the show at Penn State football that Sandusky had to retire after allegations made in 1998 that the defensive coordinator was guilty of "improper conduct with an underage male." Sandusky, thought by some to be Joe Paterno's successor at the time, abruptly and somewhat shockingly retired from coaching in 1999.
It actually gets worse. Madden went on to say "When Sandusky quit, everybody knew; not just at Penn State. It was a very poorly kept secret around college football, in general. That is why he never coached in college football again and retired at the relatively young age of 55, young for a coach." Madden also called the Second Mile Foundation "the perfect cover" for Sandusky's scheme.
I want to be absolutely clear about a few things. These reports, as of the writing of this piece, are coming only from Mark Madden, and they are currently only rumors and speculation. With that said, Mark Madden has been mostly correct about a grand jury investigation which was sealed until very recently.

April 10, 2008 -- Former GOP county official videotaped hundreds of trysts with male escorts
Former Republican Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Commissioner Bruce Barclay was charged in court documents of secretly filming sexual encounters with male prostitutes at his Monroe Township home, his Mechanicsburg business, and his West Palm Beach, Florida home. The Carlisle Sentinel reported that Barclay had secret cameras installed in the bathroom, bedrooms, an "indoor recreational area," radios, motion detectors, and intercom systems. Barclay was found to have recorded between 100 and 500 sexual encounters in his two homes and business.
Barclay resigned on April 2, 2008, as county commissioner after a State Police search of his home.
The incident was not the first to shake up the Pennsylvania capital area. On March 12, 2008, former Pennsylvania State Trooper Kevin Coleman, Sr. was charged with aiding a female prostitution ring operating in Harrisburg. Coleman was charged with preventing prostitution at a Harrisburg truck stop but, instead, arrested a rival prostitution ring's hookers in return for sexual favors from a prostitute working for the ring boss Coleman was protecting.
Barclay engaged the services of a Harrisburg Internet-based gay escort service called "harrisburgfratboys.com." A 19-year old male identified in a police complaint by the initials "W.M." said he was flown twice by Barclay to West Palm Beach. Police are also investigating a March 30 rape charge brought against Barclay.

WMR has learned that Harrisburg is the center of an investigation of the use of male and female prostitutes, including underage teens, by a number of leading state officials. The probe extends through the State Police to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and into the executive departments of Governor Ed Rendell, including Rendell's own office.
The investigation by Maryland US Attorney Tom DiBiagio of prostitution rings in the Baltimore Police Department and the administration of Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich also had links to Pennsylvania, according to information received by WMR. Baltimore Police Commissioner and later- Maryland State Police Superintendent Ed Norris was convicted of using police funds to procure prostitutes from the Pamela Martin agency of Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Palfrey went on trial on April 7 in US District Court in Washington, DC. Palfrey's defense is expected to call Louisiana Republican Senator David Vitter as a witness after he admitted he was a client of the escort service. Palfrey maintains, with a high degree of credibility, that the high-profile and Republican nature of her service' clients led to her being selectively prosecuted by the Justice Department.
DiBiagio was the first US Attorney fired by George W. Bush's Justice Department after the November 2004 election. On December 3, 2003, DiBiagio's Assistant US Attorney, Jonathan Luna, was found in a creek off the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lancaster, east of Harrisburg, stabbed to death 36 times. Police investigators entertained the theory that Luna stabbed himself with his own pen knife. Luna was reportedly investigating Ehrlich and GOP lobbyist Jack Abramoff for being clients of the Pamela Martin escort agency at the time of his death.

Tom Corbett and the Sandusky case

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett is scheduled to attend Friday evening's Penn State University Trustees' emergency meeting. It is an unusual appearance for the Governor, and the circumstance of the meeting, the sordid child molestation charges against Penn State coaching legend, Jerry Sandusky, is also unusual.
Why the Governor would impose himself on such a meeting has not been explained. But his interest in going to the meeting raises questions about Corbett's previous role or non-role in the Sandusky case.
In 1998, according to the recently released two-year grand jury report into the charges, the then Centre County District Attorney, Ray Gricar, had reviewed allegations against Sandusky, including a police report of two conversations secretly recorded by police of Sandusky admitting to the mother of an 11 year-old boy inappropriate behavior with her son.
Despite this, and additional evidence from a "lengthy" internal investigation by Penn State into Sandusky, District Attorney Gricar, with a reputation for rectitude and integrity, decided not to press charges against Sandusky.
A reasonable question is whether a straight-arrow DA like Gricar, a Republican, when confronted with an unprecedentedly explosive case involving a major Pennsylvania institution and personage, would turn to a superior to confer on the case. A person to whom Gricar might naturally turn would be the Pennsylvania Attorney General. In 1998, the Attorney General of Pennsylvania was D. Michael Fisher, a Republican in the Tom Ridge administration
Gricar stayed in office for several years after the first investigation. As the grand jury report has pointed out, there were other eye witnessed accounts of Sandusky sexually assaulting young boys during those years, between 1998 and 2005.
It is again reasonable that reports of those incidents reached District Attorney Gricar. In 2004, the Attorney General for the state of Pennsylvania was current Gov. Tom Corbett.
With mounting evidence against Sandusky, did Gricar confer with the Attorney General Corbett about prosecution of Sandusky? The Governor should answer that question.
In 2005, District Attorney Ray Gricar went missing and his body nor a trace of his existence has been found. His hard drive on his computer was destroyed.
The charges against Jerry Sandusky are sickening and unfathomable. But if there was a squelching of these crimes years ago, directed at the highest levels of state law enforcement, that is equally disgusting and should be investigated thoroughly.

How child-porn case led to Hershey School

William Charney Jr. walked into the federal courthouse in Harrisburg 10 days ago and was sentenced to more than seven years in prison. The charge: possession of almost 700 images and 40 videos of child pornography.
A vile crime in any circumstance, it is particularly chilling in the case of Charney. The 43-year-old, married and the father of two children, was responsible for the residential life of about 800 teenage students and was living on the campus of the Milton Hershey School for impoverished children. Between 2001 and 2008, Charney and his wife, Mollie, were the house parents for about a dozen boys, living in student homes with them.
Tipped off by America Online, the FBI had cause to move quickly when it first became aware of Charney in late 2009. "Let me know if you ever want to make it happen with one of my boys, they're always available," said one e-mail sent to Charney, who used an alias screen name.
Charney is the second child-sex offender uncovered at the Hershey School in recent years and the latest in a string of sexually charged issues to confront the school's administration and its Board of Managers. It comes as the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office is investigating multimillion-dollar expenditures by the school of funds meant to sustain the institution and expand its enrollment.
Before the Charney case, the most publicized of the sexual improprieties was the school's decision in 2010 to settle the claims of five former students who said they had been sexually abused by Charles Koons 2d, a serial molester who gained access to the campus through his mother, a part-time house parent. Though a mother of a boy warned the school about Koons in the late 1990s, Koons continued to visit the campus.
In 2007 and 2006, two teachers, one male and one female, were prosecuted in separate cases for having sexual relations with students.
On a matter of sex among students, a 2005 letter became public this month in a federal lawsuit that described an incident in which four students were caught engaging in sex during a school-sponsored vacation to an amusement park in Ohio. A year after the 2004 incident, the vice president for residential life, Peter Gurt, is said to have joked about the situation during a school social event.
Gurt, now the school's chief operating officer, referred to a boy as having had "the best ride in Ohio" with the girl, the letter said. The letter called the comment shameful. It was signed by a group calling itself "Concerned Employees" and sent to the Board of Managers in 2005. The letter was contained as an exhibit in the lawsuit by former student Cosme Cesar Escudero-Aviles, who contends he was unjustly expelled in unrelated incidents.
The free school is the nation's biggest and wealthiest boarding school for needy children, with $7.5 billion in assets and 1,850 students. It is about 90 minutes west of Philadelphia and enrolls students from throughout the United States, with many of them from Pennsylvania.
The crimes of Charney and Koons and the other incidents raise questions about student safety and the quality of oversight at a school that markets itself as an enriching boarding-school experience for impoverished children. Hershey spends about $110,000 a year per student, according to its nonprofit IRS tax filing, more than the nation's most expensive and elite prep schools.
Hershey School spokeswoman Connie McNamara said the institution vigilantly protects the children and "as soon as the School became aware of the allegations against Mr. Charney, we took immediate action. We cooperated fully with authorities and we received assurances that our students were not involved."
She said that none of the pornographic images involved Milton Hershey School students and that Charney took a lie-detector test that confirmed what the government had told the school.
McNamara said the school has policies for both staff and students that prohibit inappropriate use of the Internet. "We have Internet filters in place, and anything categorized as pornography is blocked on our network," she said.
The school's Board of Managers issued a statement in response to questions: "Milton Hershey School is a safe place for children. No school is without isolated instances of problems and they are heartbreaking when they occur. We do everything humanly possible to prevent them and we learn from them if they do occur. But those isolated instances are not the story of the Milton Hershey School. The story of the Milton Hershey School is the story of a safe environment for children to grow and learn.
"Student safety is of paramount importance to our staff, our administration, and this Board," the statement said. "It is at the heart of what we do, and we take that responsibility seriously. While we continually assess our practices, we are confident that we have the most stringent protections in place."
The managers said they had the "full faith and confidence in the School's leadership."
Under investigation The matters being investigated by the attorney general include the institution's 2006 purchase of a private, money-losing golf course north of Hershey for $12 million, two to three times the course's appraised value.
Although the Hershey School said it purchased the golf course in part as "buffer land" for student safety and future expansion, it opened the golf course to the public and built a $5 million restaurant/bar on it.
James H. Lytle, professor in the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania, said unexpected events were bound to happen at a large boarding school. However, he said, "I'm not comfortable with the number of incidents, and I am particularly uncomfortable with the comments on senior night."
The remark attributed to Peter Gurt, Lytle said, was "close to cause for dismissal for me, or at the least a lengthy suspension without pay." He said the comment would be "way beyond the bounds of appropriate behavior. . . . It indicates a wink-and-a-blink culture at the school."
F. Frederic Fouad, president of the nonprofit group Protect the Hershey's Children Inc., which has criticized the institution, said: "The problem with this school is a leadership that does not prevent these incidents in the first place and then is forced repeatedly to react on the latest outrage. There's no doubt that the well-being of the Milton Hershey School children is not being optimally protected."
McNamara, the spokeswoman, said that all staff at the school undergo state and federal background checks upon hiring and that the checks are repeated periodically throughout an employee's tenure.
School officials, she said, are confident they are "following - and exceeding - best practice in the area of student safety after having benchmarked other residential schools. We have continued to review our practices in recent years."
The century-old Hershey School was founded by Milton and Catherine Hershey as an orphanage and school, and is financed by profits from Hershey chocolate bars and Reese's peanut butter cups. It is governed by four interlocking boards, the most powerful of which is the board of the Hershey Trust Co. that controls its finances.
LeRoy S. Zimmerman, a state Republican heavyweight and a political ally of Gov. Corbett, now heads the Hershey Trust Co. board. Zimmerman is a former two-term attorney general, the first of an unbroken string of elected Republican attorneys general in Pennsylvania who have regulated the Hershey charity since the early 1980s.
Zimmerman joined the charity in 2002 with the support of then-Attorney General Mike Fisher and has earned $1.9 million in compensation through director fees on Hershey-related boards.
The Attorney General's Office is now headed by Corbett appointee Linda Kelly. Nils Frederiksen, spokesman for the office, did not return e-mails and a phone call last week asking how the Charney case might affect the ongoing investigation into the charity's financial dealings.
Heidi Havens, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Middle District of Pennsylvania, said there was no evidence from its investigation that Charney victimized students in his role as a house parent or later as the school's associate director of home life for the senior division.
Charney's attorney, Dennis E. Boyle of Camp Hill, said the school was concerned that Charney might have molested its students and asked him to submit to a lie-detector test. Boyle said in court documents and at the sentencing that Charney passed the test. McNamara said in an e-mail that Charney volunteered for the lie-detector test and the school accepted the offer.
Delayed action Before the Charney case, the most recent experience for the school in a sex-related case was that of Koons.
Although he was not arrested until 2008, Koons was brought to the attention of the school and the Derry Township police in the late 1990s when the mother of a former student said in an affidavit that her son had been molested in the 1980s.
A police and school investigation was launched in 1998 but abandoned without explanation in April 1999. Koons was eventually nabbed by the police in Middletown Borough.
Koons was prosecuted for cases that did not involve Hershey School students. Nonetheless, Hershey paid $3 million to settle the claims of five former students. McNamara said the molestations were at least 20 years old.
The Hershey School employee assigned to look into the Koons allegations in the late 1990s, Beth Shaw, has not explained why the investigation was dropped, allowing Koons to continue to visit the school. Shaw remains one of the institution's highest-paid administrators as executive director of student support, according to the school's latest IRS tax filing.
In a two-year span, there were two cases of teachers having sex with students.
In 2007, part-time drum instructor Michael T. Culp, 30, admitted having consensual sex with a 16-year-old Hershey School female student he was driving to her home in New Hampshire, according to a police report. The two stayed overnight at a Days Inn in Windsor, N.Y. Court records in New York show Culp was charged with disorderly conduct, sexual misconduct, and endangering the welfare of a child and fined $250. The school fired him.
In 2006, Derry Township police arrested English teacher Brianna K. Said, 30, and charged her with having a sexual relationship with a 17-year-old male student. After she pleaded no contest to a charge of corrupting a minor, a Dauphin County judge sentenced her in September 2006 to two years of probation and a $500 fine, according to court records. The school said it terminated Said's employment after learning of the relationship.
Peter Gurt's purported remarks date to 2005 but resurfaced with the recent lawsuit, filed in the same courthouse in which Charney was sentenced.
In 2004, a group of Hershey School students and staff traveled to the Cedar Point amusement park in Ohio for a school-sponsored vacation. While at the park, four students - three males and one female - were caught engaging in sexual activity, according to the letter in the federal lawsuit filed by Escudero-Aviles.
Students, teachers, and staff on the tight-knit campus heard about the incident, and a year later it became the topic of conversation at Senior Recognition night, an annual convivial gala for graduating students. In a speech at the alumni house, Gurt told the group of seniors that one of the boys in the class who participated in the foursome had "the best ride in Ohio," according to the letter that the Concerned Employees group e-mailed to the Board of Managers on May 26, 2005.
"Women are offended! 'You had the best ride in Ohio' is no way to describe a sexual act with a woman," stated the letter, which contained other accusations of inappropriate behavior.
A 2005 graduate who witnessed Gurt's comment said that he didn't consider it disrespectful because "everyone knew what was going on" at the park and Gurt was implying that those caught were "knuckleheads. . . . We laughed hysterically about it because some of the kids involved were in our class."
On Friday, school spokeswoman McNamara said the Board of Managers "took this allegation very seriously and hired an outside attorney to conduct a thorough investigation of the matter. Beyond that, we do not comment on personnel matters."
Gurt did not return a phone call or e-mail for comment.
McNamara said the Board of Managers received another letter "during this same time period, signed by more than 50 house parents at the Milton Hershey School who contradicted these allegations."
In the Hershey organizational structure in 2005, the house parents were managed by Gurt. According to the school's latest nonprofit tax filing with the IRS, Gurt earned $314,295 a year.
Case against Charney Charney might not have been caught if it had not been for a new federal law, the Protect Our Children Act of 2008, that provided for Internet operators to report child pornography on their networks.

The Inquirer is withholding the screen name of the second e-mailer because of the graphic images associated with it on a Google search.
Two days later, the second e-mailer wrote to
matthew343@aim.com: "Sure, here you go, i think i've already shown you zack's pics, right? these are the two new ones. let me know if you ever want to make it happen with one of my boys, they're always available."
Less than an hour later, the second e-mailer added that he might need to trade for pictures.
Matthew343@aim.com responded: "i am up for trading." The traded pictures were graphic and contained images of young boys engaged sexual activity, according to court documents.
AOL informed the online CyberTipline, and the FBI eventually located Charney on the Hershey campus. One piece of evidence leading the FBI to him was his Hershey School e-mail.
The FBI raided Charney's campus home Feb. 12, 2010. A year later, the U.S. Attorney's Office in central Pennsylvania announced it was charging Charney with one count of receiving and distributing child pornography, and he pleaded guilty this April. Hershey spokeswoman McNamara has said the institution removed Charney from his positions when it became aware of the investigation in early 2010.
Boyle, Charney's attorney, wrote in the Oct. 14 sentencing memo that Charney was a decorated military veteran, family man, and a victim of sex abuse as a child. Charney secretly began viewing homosexual pornography five or six years ago and advanced to child pornography, according to the memo.
Charney was suicidal when he was caught and he is remorseful, Boyle said, noting that his wife has stuck by him. "It's a difficult case because Mr. Charney is truly a good man," the attorney said in court. Boyle said Charney had a compulsion and would download the images and then delete them.
Daryl F. Bloom, the assistant U.S. attorney handling the case, said Charney had cooperated in a government investigation. Parts of the case remain sealed. The U.S. Attorney's Office would not comment on the second e-mailer.
Federal Judge Sylvia Rambo told Charney at his sentencing Oct. 20 that there were factors that contributed to leniency but that she was troubled by a check that Charney wrote to meet a teenage boy. Boyle said in court that the meeting was never held.
Speaking to the judge, Charney said: "The shame was overwhelming and I didn't know what to do about it. . . . I apologize for my actions. I wish there was something more I could do."
Charney must report to a federal prison Nov. 29 to serve his time.

PA Attorney General Tom Corbett ignored complaints about misuses of $7 billion Hershey Trust as far back as 2007. The question is whether Corbett owes too much to his political allies including Hershey Trust chairman Leroy Zimmerman to investigate them fairly. Corbett has significant conflicts of interest w leadership of the Trust who sponsor fundraisers for his campaign in the millions. The Trust exists for one purpose - to provide a boarding school for as many needy kids as funds allow. However, they used their for profit subsidiary HERCO to serve their own purposes. The Inquirer pointed out that HERCO has paid less than 0.002 percent of their revenues to support the school in recent years, even though the school owns 100% of HERCO. HERCO controls the hotels, amusement park, campground, etc.

Obama considering ex-UNL chancellor for secretary of education, reports say

As President-elect Barack Obama selects his cabinet, a former Cornhusker has found his way into consideration.
Graham Spanier, chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln from 1991 to 1995, has been named one of five leading prospects for secretary of education, according to an Atlantic Magazine political blog.
"Right now it's pure speculation," said Lisa Powers, director of public information at Pennsylvania State University, where Spanier has been president since he left UNL. "Obviously it's quite a flattering honor to have (Spanier) mentioned for this position."

Judge Who Set Unsecured Bail For Jerry Sandusky Is a Second Mile Volunteer
When Jerry Sandusky was initially arraigned, as previously reported by Sara Ganim, prosecutors requested $500,000.00 bail and that Sandusky be required to wear a leg monitor. District Judge Leslie Dutchcot, however, ordered that Sandusky be freed on $100,000.00 unsecured bail. She ordered that Sandusky be freed and pay nothing unless he failed to show up for a court hearing.
Judge Dutchcot has quite the professional resume. In addition to her duties as District Judge, she is of counsel to the firm Goodall & Yurchak. It speaks to the small town nature of the county, I suppose, that the firm's URL is "centrelaw.com." According to her profile, Judge Dutchcot has been named the State College Lawyer of the Year, completed a "Leadership" program and has served as a counselor at Centre County Law Enforcement Camp Cadet, Inc.
Of course, also according to her profile, Judge Dutchcot is a volunteer for Sandusky's group, The Second Mile. Sandusky turned himself in the morning of November 5, a Saturday, at Judge Dutchot's Centre County office. He was released, under the aforementioned terms, shortly thereafter.
Attorneys often serve charitable foundations in their pro bono capacities, or just volunteer in their spare time, so there is nothing weird about that. It just seems that, given the nature of the charges, the small town atmosphere and her relationship to Second Mile, Judge Dutchcot should have recused herself from being involved with this process. Or, that could be precisely why she did not.

The Penn State football pedophilia scandal will not stop at the Penn State campus in State College bit will have ramifications throughout Pennsylvania. The Penn State scandal already involves the current Republican Governor of Pennsylvania, Tom Corbett, and his two predecessors, Democrat Ed Rendell and Republican Tom Ridge.
Corbett is guilty of the same ethical and possibly criminal violations that plague ousted Penn State football coach Joe Paterno. Like Paterno, who was more concerned about his near-godly status as Penn State's football coach for over 40 years than in the plight of molested children, Corbett, as Pennsylvania Attorney General since 2004, sat on issuing indictments in the Penn State and The Second Mile foundation pedophile case until after he was elected governor in 2010.
Corbett had a chance to act quickly when the case of child molestation involving Paterno's former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky came to his attention in 2009. Although Corbett convened a grand jury to examine evidence in the pedophilia scandal, speed of action to prevent continuing molestation by Sandusky and perhaps others was not Corbett's major priority, but becoming governor was. Corbett postponed action against Sandusky and perhaps others until after his election and the scandal had another two years to metastasize into a scandal of epic proportions.
Corbett as governor is also a member of the board of trustees of Penn State. Corbett has a major conflict of interest owing to his previous status as Attorney General, current governor, and trustee of Penn State. Corbett should recuse himself as a Penn State trustee and, perhaps, this rumored GOP vice presidential candidate in next year's election should consider resigning as governor. Corbett's involvement as trustee and past Attorney General is also complicated by the fact that two past Penn State officials, Vice President Gary Schultz and former Athletic Director Tim Curley, have been indicted on charges of failing to report child abuse and perjury before the grand jury. Schultz retired in 2009 but returned to his old position temporarily in September, while Corbett, knowing full well of the problems with Schultz, was serving as a university trustee. Curley's and Schultz's attorney fees are being paid by Penn State, with Corbett as a trustee of the university -- another ethical conflict on the part of Corbett.
Corbett, as Attorney General, could have certainly seen through the conflict taking place after the 2007 election for Centre County magistrate Leslie Dutchcot and the outset of the grand jury probe of Sandusky. A registered Republican, like Sandusky and Paterno, Dutchcot ran in the May 2007 Democratic and Republican primaries, winning the Democratic primary and coming in third in the GOP race. She won the general election but the fact that she was on both ballots and was a donor to Sandusky's Second Mile charity and volunteered her services to the organization raises all sorts of red flags, but not to Attorney General Corbett, who may have been more interested in propelling the career of a Republican who won the Democratic primary than in seeing justice done.
Dutchcot, rather than recuse herself from the arraignment of Sandusky on 21 felony counts of sexually abusing eight boys over a 15-year period, granted the accused serial pedophile $100,000 unsecured bail, in other words without any cash, and allowed him to return to a home that adjoins Lamont Elementary School in State College. Dutchcot's involvement with rescuing Yorkshire terriers does not appear to extend to rescuing abused children, especially from the likes of her associate Sandusky.
Second Mile, in business since 1977, is also accused by some sports columnists of pimping out young boys for sex to deep-pocketed donors to the charity. Pittsburgh sports talk radio host Mark Madden said "I hear a rumor that there will be a shocking development from the Second Miles Foundation … That Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors." Two prominent columnists were reported by Madden to be working on the story.

On April 15, 2005, Centre County district attorney Ray Gricar, turned up missing when his car was found locked and abandoned near the Susquehanna River in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. Gricar, who had been Centre County's district attorney for 20 years, declined to prosecute Sandusky in 1998, when the first charges surfaced about sexual misconduct with minors. In July 2005, Gricar's lap top computer was founs by fishermen in the Susquehanna, minus the hard drive. Two months later, the hard drive was found near the river bank but too badly damaged to retrieve information. In 1996, Gricar's brother, Roy, was reported missing in Dayton, Ohio after his abandoned car was discovered. He had recently been fired from his job at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. A few days later Roy Gricar's body turned up in the Great Miami River. No traces of his brother Ray have ever been found.
In 1998, when Sandusky was first investigated for inappropriate behavior with a boy, the Pennsylvania State Police reportedly warned the boy's mother not to speak to the press. The governor of Pennsylvania at the time was Tom Ridge, who was also a Penn State ex-officio trustee. Ridge was also a trustee when Penn State, in 1995, hired Graham Spanier, the Chancellor of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, as Penn State President. Spanier, a specialist on family sociology who hails from Cape Town, South Africa, remains a tenured Penn State professor. Spanier wrote an article on mate swapping and sexual "swinging" for the Archives of Sexual Behavior. Ironically, Ridge, the governor when Spanier was hired at Penn State, is now rumored to be in consideration for Penn State's next president.
Political conflicts-of-interest in Pennsylvania that involve child abuse are not confined to Republicans in State College or Harrisburg.
In September 2009, Luzerne County Pleas Court judges Mark Ciavarella, Jr. and Michael Conahan were indicted on federal charges in the "Kids for Cash" scandal. The judges were later convicted of accepting millions of dollars in cash kickbacks from two private, for-profit, juvenile facilities run by PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care for sentencing juvenile offenders to harsh sentences in order to ensure maximum use of the facilities. Youthful offenders who committed minor violations were handed out severe sentences. Hundreds of victims' sentences were later overturned but there were rumors of violence and sexual abuse committed on the youth at the private detention centers.
Luzerne County Democratic district attorney Jackie Musto Carroll said she took no action against Ciavarella because he raised no red flags in his sentencing practices. Musto Carroll's Republican opponent in the last election, Stephanie Salavantis, took issue with the incumbent's defense that she was unaware of Ciavarella's kickback scheme. Salavantis defeated Musto Carroll, whose uncle, former Pennsylvania state senator and U.S. Representative Ray Musto, was indicted in 2010 on federal charges of accepting kickbacks from an unnamed company.

April 10, 2008 -- "Former Republican Cumberland County, Pennsylvania Commissioner Bruce Barclay was charged in court documents of secretly filming sexual encounters with male prostitutes at his Monroe Township home, his Mechanicsburg business, and his West Palm Beach, Florida home. Barclay was found to have recorded between 100 and 500 sexual encounters in his two homes and business. Barclay engaged the services of a Harrisburg Internet-based gay escort service called "harrisburgfratboys.com." A 19-year old male identified in a police complaint by the initials 'W.M.' said he was flown twice by Barclay to West Palm Beach. Police are also investigating a March 30 rape charge brought against Barclay."
April 10, 2008 -- "WMR has learned that Harrisburg is the center of an investigation of the use of male and female prostitutes, including underage teens, by a number of leading state officials. The probe extends through the State Police to the Pennsylvania Supreme Court and into the executive departments of Governor Ed Rendell, including Rendell's own office. The investigation by Maryland US Attorney Tom DiBiagio of prostitution rings in the Baltimore Police Department and the administration of Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich also had links to Pennsylvania, according to information received by WMR. Baltimore Police Commissioner and later- Maryland State Police Superintendent Ed Norris was convicted of using police funds to procure prostitutes from the Pamela Martin agency of Deborah Jeane Palfrey. Palfrey went on trial on April 7 in US District Court in Washington, DC. Palfrey's defense is expected to call Louisiana Republican Senator David Vitter as a witness after he admitted he was a client of the escort service. Palfrey maintains, with a high degree of credibility, that the high-profile and Republican nature of her service' clients led to her being selectively prosecuted by the Justice Department."

Ironically, Rendell is now being considered to be the next president of Temple University in Philadelphia, proving that, for Ridge and Rendell, inattention and conflicts-of-interest pay off in the end.
The fallout from Penn State has universities and colleges across the nation checking their records for indications of child abuse and other sex scandals. The Citadel is now embroiled in a scandal involving child sexual abuse by a summer camp counselor. Past gay-oriented sex parties at Duke and the University of North Carolina involving then Duke basketball and football player Reggie Love reportedly cost him his job as President Obama's "body man." De facto White House chief of staff Pete Rouse, upon hearing of potential problems regarding Love at Duke and UNC and on the heels of the scandal at Penn State, forced Love to leave the White House staff immediately, even over the objections of Obama.

Reuters) - Penn State says alleged child sex abuser Jerry Sandusky is "not welcome" on its campus, but the university so far has no legal recourse to keep the former assistant football coach away.
In her bail ruling, Judge Leslie Dutchot ordered the former defensive coordinator not to have any contact with minors, witnesses or alleged victims.
The ruling placed no restrictions on his travel. Sandusky's lawyer, Joe Amendola, advised Sandusky and his wife to take a trip ahead of the next legal proceeding to clear his head, he told CNN.
In effect, Sandusky is free to return to the Penn State campus, something school officials are powerless to stop.
"Our legal counsel informed Jerry Sandusky that he is not welcome on our campus," Penn State spokeswoman AnneMarie Mountz said in an e-mail to Reuters on Wednesday.
Requests for information on a possible restraining order against Sandusky, or what officials would do if he tried to return to campus, were not immediately answered.
Nor was it clear if prosecutors would seek to alter Sandusky's bail conditions. Calls to the Pennsylvania attorney general's office were not immediately returned.
Sandusky, once considered a likely successor to legendary Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno, is accused of sexually assaulting eight boys over more than a decade.
A grand jury report detailing the accusations said that a graduate assistant with the football team witnessed Sandusky assaulting a boy in the showers of the football building on campus in 2002.
The allegations of sex crimes and their cover-up have rocked the university. The fallout ended the career of Paterno, who along with the university's president, was fired on November 9 by the board of trustees.
Sandusky professed his innocence on Monday, saying he is not a pedophile, but admitting he showered with young boys.
