Just to note....there are now two threads that contain parts of the discussion on this matter...so it is a bit confusing if one doesn't read each. One is here - and it is long, and only the more recent posts address this most directly - but the entire thread is germane.

"Civil disobedience is not our problem. Our problem is civil obedience! People are obedient in the face of poverty, starvation, stupidity, war, and cruelty. Our problem is that grand thieves are running the country. That's our problem!" - Howard Zinn

R.K. Locke Wrote:I have also lost track of the argument here.
To be clear, I think the idea of LBJ as a sponsor is absurd, and that Mac Wallace was not on the 6th floor of the TSBD. There would be absolutely no need for him to be there, and no need to further implicate LBJ by the presence of a single fingerprint. If anyone can present a compelling argument to the contrary then I'm all ears.
The only plausible explanation I can come up with to plant Wallace's fingerprint would be to have something assassination related to hold over LBJ's head if he were to go astray...

So, the question of Darby's certification goes unanswered for the moment.
Nice try, but as earlier mentioned, even if they were to answer whatever your questions were - that would possibly NOT answer the real question[s]. However, an answer to if he ever was a qualified member, would go some way. Remember also, there was a second print expert; however, what I've been told about him, which I can not share, is at complete odds with what Joan Mellen stated about him. Let's just say, I have been told both men were made to be very afraid and lives were tampered with. More I can't say - though I was informed. Again, I hope this full story can sometime be told - as several major players are dead and those that aren't, in the end, are not as important as the truth of dirty-tricks/covert operations/disinfo-ops and the coup d'etat we had in the USA. I will tell you this: I have been told by several persons in a position to know, both were eminently qualified - although one's status may have been 'changed' to discredit...a typical 'op'.

This is really getting a little nutty. Especially with this last go round with Peter and Drew. (I really don't know what Peter is talking about in that last post.)
Computer print checking is now the state of the art in that field. Because it goes far in eliminating human error and bias.
The error could be just carelessness or it could be the constant of wanting to do what the client wishes, which is always a danger. As was the case with Gus Russo and his "expert".
If Darby was working from copies, then that may explain why he made an error, if he did.
But why criticize Joan if she does not reveal her expert at this time? She has talked about this in Pittsburgh and did not reveal her expert, and she did the same in Dallas. She is clearly saving it for her book and I have little doubt she will go into great detail there.
There was always a problem with this since, as Duke Lane noted, it was not done out in the open. It was done very quietly behind the scenes; and then it was announced as if it were a fait accompli, including going down to Dallas and getting in front of TV cameras, and doing the same on national TV. Again, I blame that idiot Nigel Turner for this. He should have been at pains to give this the most thorough and professional going over before putting it on television.
But what do you expect from the guy who gave us Judy Baker, Tom Wilson, and Barr McClellan?
If I ever met the guy I think i'd slug him.

I'm delighted to explain my actions. Mellen claims that she received "inside information" from IAI files that Darby was not "certified" as a print examiner, as stated in Darby's affidavit accompanying Darby's findings. I emailed the designated lawyer for IAI's board and asked her to disclose the same information to me, if the company's policy permitted. As you can see, she declined to do so.

I don't think that is what she was saying.
I think she is saying that he had not renewed his certification, not that he was never certified.

This is what she said:
"One day the latent print examiner called me with some other information. He had contacts at the headquarters of the organization that certified examiners and they went into the file of Nathan Darby. They discovered a note in the file. Not only was Nathan Darby not certified when he swore on that affidavit that he was, but there was a note in his file stating that should he request re-certification, that certification would be denied."
Her meaning seems pretty plain to me.

If he had to request re-certification, then he was once certified.
So what she is saying is that he had not renewed at at the time.
I mean this happens a lot. I am a teacher, the last time I had to renew my credential, I missed the deadline. So my principal had to call me in, and get me to of the classroom and send me downtown to renew my credential. The next day I got back into the room.
BTW, was Darby retired at the time that he did this? Or was he still working in law enforcement?

Retired.
From his affidavit.
- My name is A. Nathan Darby. I am a resident of Austin, Texas, and I am fully competent to make this affidavit.
- I have been active in law enforcement for many years, starting with the Texas Department of public Safety as a State Trooper in 1938. I then served with the Austin, Texas Police Department from October 1940, and including my military service, I was with the Austin Police Department until my retirement in August 1979. During that period of service, I rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. I am presently an expert in fingerprint identification, and I hold the designation of Certified Latent Fingerprint Examiner (#78-468), which is issued by the Internal Association for Identification, pursuant to the attached Exhibit DAN #1.
- I first became interested in fingerprint work in 1942. My direct work in fingerprint identification began soon after, during my military service. I joined the U.S. Army in October 1943 and graduated from Officer Candidate School as a lieutenant in February 1945. I was immediately put in charge of preparing a fingerprint identification system for the Philippine Commonwealth. For my work of setting up their Central Fingerprint Bureau, I was awarded the Philippine Military Merit Medal, the Philippine Commonwealth's highest non-combat award for foreign military personnel. The United States Army also awarded me the Army Commendation Medal. This achievement was further recognized in the 1946 textbook, Lectures in Fingerprints by Fred C. Luchico, then Chief of the Identification Division with the Department of Justice, where he states that I "provided a modern, current, and complete fingerprint file for the Philippine Commonwealth." By 1946 I had risen to the rank of Captain. When my tour of Duty was completed in the Philippines, I returned to the Austin Police Department in November 1946.
- On 1 January 1948 I was promoted to sergeant and assigned to the Identification Section of the Austin Police Department. On 7 July 1953 I was promoted to lieutenant. In 1956, I was made supervisor of the four employees of Identification and Criminal Records Section of the Austin Police Department. At this time I handled the classification of 176,000 cards and expanded the section to fourteen employees, training and supervising all personnel. In 1970, I worked on advanced record-keeping with the Kodak Miracode system and developed the fingerprint and photograph coding method for the system. During this time I also served on the board of directors of the Texas Division of the International Association for Identification. I hold an Advanced Certificate in Law Enforcement and an Instructor Certificate from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement. I have been a member of the Texas Division of the International Association for Identification since November, 1946.
- Since 1949, I have testified in numerous cases in the State and Federal Courts about fingerprint identification. This testimony included the preparation of latent charts as exhibits. There was never a mistrial or appeal based on my testimony. Attached is Exhibit DAN#2. This exhibit shows the opinions of two District Judges, Travis County, Texas regarding my testimony experience.
Ahimsa….may you live in a world of non-forcefulness.
