Hyde Family in the CIA and USAID

When Ruth Paine was 15 years old, she preached [sic] with a traveling Bible school. Ruth Paine told the Warren Commission: "I was asked to be a leader, a teacher with a traveling Bible school. We went to three different small towns in Indiana and Ohio, and taught young children. I led songs and games and read stories." Ruth Paine became a Quaker while attending Antioch College in 1951 and was a delegate to two conferences of the Friends World Committee in England in 1952. She graduated from Antioch College in 1955. In 1993 Ruth Paine described herself as a financial contributor to the Friends World Committee.

RUSSIA/UNITED STATES EXCHANGE PROGRAMS

According to the Warren Report:
"In 1955 Mrs. Paine was active in the work of the North American Young Friends Committee, which, with State Department cooperation, was making an effort to lessen the tensions between Soviet Russia and the United States by means of ...exchanges of young Russians and Americans. It was during this period that Mrs. Paine became interested in the Russian language. Mrs. Paine participated in [and arranged] a Russian-American student exchange program...Ruth Paine was the "convener or clerk" of the East-West Contacts Group of the North American Young Friends Committee which was established in 1955. She has corresponded, until recently, with a Russian schoolteacher." [WR p285]

Ruth Paine told the Warren Commission:

Paine: It was at this conference, toward the later part, arising out of a discussion of the need for communication and more of it between the United States and the Soviet Union, by no means the bulk of business of this conference, but a small committee of interested people, was working on this matter.

Jenner: Are these interested young people?

Paine: These are all young Friends.

Jenner: And you were then of what age, 1955. Twenty-three?

Paine: Yes...This was at the time that plans first began for encouraging an exchange of young people between the Soviet Union and the United States, and I became active with the committee planning
that, and from the planning there was an exchange, three Soviet young people came to this country and four young Quakers went to the Soviet Union... The Committee worked on: "Organization of pen pal correspondence between American and Soviet young people." In 1958 Ruth Paine was involved in a Russian/American exchange program on a leadership level. [Friends Journal 4.26.58]

ANALYSIS

Another Quaker group, the American Friends Service Committee, sent a delegation to the Soviet Union in 1955. The American Friends Service Committee was very much on the Left. The Friends World Committee soon sent a delegation to the Soviet Union. The CIA had an interest in "cultural exchange programs."

CIA DD/P Richard Bissell stated:

"Exchange of person programs...are more effective if carried out by private auspices than if officially supported by the United States Government." [Marchetti Cult of Intell. p52]

The SSCIA reported that from 1964 to 1974

"the FBI identified over 100 intelligence officers among the approximately 400 Soviet students who attended universities as part of an East-West student exchange program. Also, in this program's 14-year history, more than 100 American students were the target of Soviet recruitment approaches in the USSR." [SSCIA For. & Mil. Intell. V1 p164]

What was the story behind the Friends World Committee?

Ruth Paine answered negatively when she was asked if she had been aware of any intelligence community interest in student exchange programs. She stated:

"The Soviets that came over were real party-line types, very doctrinaire."

Ruth Paine was asked to name the State Department official who was involved with her program. She responded, "I haven't a clue, but you know they were working on cultural exchange at that point. Trying to make a crack in the Iron Curtain." Michael Paine stated, "I remember reading about that kind of thing in The Times and finding it so frustrating that a genuine effort to try to get person-to-person contact was being subverted by the government there.".......

I posted this back in January in response to an individual who was gushing with enthusiasm in reaction to Ruth granting him an audience at her Santa Rosa residence......

Would she talk "seriously" with someone who finds it troubling that DeMohrenschildt left Dallas on April 14 after allegedly teasing Oswald with, "Lee, how could you have missed the shot?" and eleven days later, on 25 April, have met in NYC with Tom Devine, who was posing as an investment banker, and "independently" on that same day, with Devine's best friend from Rochester, a man who knew that DeMohrenschildt's party included an undercover CIA asset posing as a secretary, and Devine's friend Dryer, himself, posing as a kenaf farmer?

Ruth Paine is to be encountered to be challenged, not petted, stroked, and flattered. Did Bill ask her how well she got to know her parents' close friend who was rooming in her parents' house in New York in the 1930's, and dining with them in the 1950's?

Reagan and Shaheen were both born in Tampico, IL, pop. 600, just a couple of years apart. When Bob Gates was questioned in his DCIA senate committee appointment confirmation hearing, his answers related to questions about John Shaheen's business partner, Roy Furmark, are a real hoot. By that time, Shaheen had died of cancer, along with Bill Casey.......

A Yes. 8 Q Can you describe what that relationship was? 9 A They were extremely close personal friends.- They 10 were both very much involved in Republican politics. They 11 were very much involved in the William J. Donovan Foundation 12 or the OSS, the Office of Strategic Services, which is an 13 all members who were in that service, and they would meet and I 14 have dinners and present awards out. A He did special things like when the company got into financial trouble, Newfoundland Refining Company, Casey and Shaheen and I went to Kuwait for about a week or 10 days trying to interest KNPC, Kuwait National Petroleum Company, owned by the government, to become a partner in Newfoundland Refinery, to invest funds to revamp the refinery so that we could use 100 percent Kuwaiti crude. .... He was an advisor when Shaheen had problems, and you know, but that was my longest involvement with Casey on that trip. Q Place that time for me, will you please? A 1975 or 1976, let's say. Q So this would be just before the time that you left? A Yes. You got to know Casey best, I guess, on the trip to Kuwait; is that correct? A Well, I knew him all these years through Shaheen, you know, and you got to know more and more, and of course I J was- Shaheen 's heir apparent, okay, and so I would see Casey a lot and lots of times I wouldn't see him, you know. Q Let me move you into the period 1984, 1985. To ^ what extent were you in contact with Casey in '84-85? .....

(Roy Furmark's 1987 testimony excerpted above reminds me of the WC testimony of Nancy Perrin Rich, but she was less vague. Furmark stated that Shaheen spent $16 million on his failed NYC newspaper start up,The New York Press.

IN 1972 Shaheen was quoted in the NY Times saying the purpose of the newspaper was to support president Nixon.)

Chotiner said that O'Brien, Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 1968, still had some dues to pay from the 1960 election that Nixon had lost to Jack Kennedy......

In 1951, a sharp increase in diplomatic tensions was seen by the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) as the precursor to war. A greater volume of communications required a stronger system, and CIA Director Walter Bedell Smith hired McClelland as chief of CIA communications, a position known as "Assistant Director, Communications", on September 10, 1951.[SUP][4][/SUP] There, McClelland oversaw the technical development and implementation of a secure global communications system.[SUP][4][/SUP] He served the CIA for 14 years until his death in Washington, D.C. in 1965.[SUP][19] ....[/SUP]

Lt. Col. J. Elroy Mccaw : "Elroy served at Army Air Forces Headquarters in the Pentagon as Executive Officer and Special Assistant to General (Harold M.) McClelland, head of USAAF communications. He was also McClelland's liaison to OSS.."

Mccaw became chairman of Rand Development in 1968.

The family moved to Seattle in 1953. In 1969, John McCaw died suddenly. Facing lawsuits claiming all but $20,000 of his $12 million estate, Mrs. Garrison spent years resolving the company's finances, enlisting the help of attorney William H. Gates Sr.
She saved the business, and her sons took the helm, creating McCaw Cablevision & Cellular Communications. She remained as chairman emeritus.
In 1994, the family sold the company to AT&T for $11.5 billion......

One story has him making a secret journey to Russia to install a weather station to assist British pilots. Many suspected that Elroy for many years stayed active in intelligence work as an operative for the CIA.

In 1965, Nixon was in Moscow on an unplanned trip, he received a Soviet visa in Helsinki in just three hours. He was accompanied by and representing John M. Shaheen.


Shaheen's sister is married since the 1940's to broadcast journalist Hugh Downs. Shaheen honeymooned at Marathon Key, FL in 1951 with Henry J. Rand and Dan T. Moore. Moore's sister was Luvie Moore Abell Pearson, wife of syndicated columnist Drew Pearson. They all cameto Florida at the invitation of their friend, Dr. George W. Crile, Jr., Skull & Bones, 1928. Crile's son George III worked for Pearson and Anderson and then for 31 years, CBS News and 60 Minutes.

The document revealing White House knowledge of Casey's Madrid trip was among records released to me by the archivists at the George H.W. Bush library in College Station, Texas. The U.S. Embassy's confirmation of Casey's trip was passed along by State Department legal adviser Edwin D. Williamson to Associate White House Counsel Chester Paul Beach Jr. in early November 1991, just as the October Surprise inquiry was taking shape......

......Longtime Arafat confidant Bassam Abu Sharif said that in mid-1980, he met in Paris with John Shaheen, a friend to both Ronald Reagan and Reagan's campaign chief, William J. Casey. Abu Sharif told me that Shaheen, a former U.S. intelligence officer of Lebanese origin, extended a Republican offer of improved U.S. relations with the PLO if the Arafat-led organization would assist in persuading the Iranians to delay the hostage release until after the November 1980 elections.

Shaheen, who died in 1985, has long been a central figure in the so-called "October Surprise" case, allegations that Republicans sabotaged Carter's hostage negotiations as a way to ensure the 1980 election of Reagan as president and George H.W. Bush as vice president. Though Abu Sharif and Arafat have previously discussed the Republican overture, they had refused to identify the Republican intermediary until now.....

Roy Furmark's name is mentioned literally countless times in Robert Gates failed February,1987 Senate, DCI confirmation hearing. Shaheen is never spoken of.:

This was the first thing that we had ever seen that suggested there might have been some possibility of a diversion. It was very shaky stuff. What you had was an analytical judgment by Allen with no concrete evidence, and as I point out again in this seven or eight-page memorandum, his concern about this is expressed in one sentence and it doesn t even mention the contras, but simply the possibility of a diversion to other U.S. projects. And we had this call from Furmark, that the Director took from Furmark. It was at that point that we told Allen to lay all this out in a piece of paper that we then passed to Poindexter when we saw it on paper.
