All of the Eastern European countries are to varying degrees xenophobic and have an 'us' vs. 'them' mentality - sometimes down to the us being only family and close friends. I see it here in the Czech Republic where the few minorities are treated poorly and most foreigners are not welcome to most of the population. They have little history of immigrants, but that is NOT true for parts of Hungary nor for Romania.
Sadly, Some of these countries had collaborationist fascist governments during WW2 and the Nazi period. Some of this viewpoint is still very much in evidence. For Hungary, the relevant past, in short is the following:
The Arrow Cross Party (Hungarian: Nyilaskeresztes Párt Hungarista Mozgalom, literally "Arrow Cross Party-Hungarist Movement") was a Hungarist party led by Ferenc Szálasi, which led a government in Hungary known as the Government of National Unity from 15 October 1944 to 28 March 1945. During its short rule, ten to fifteen thousand civilians (many of whom were Jews) were murdered outright, and 80,000 people were deported from Hungary to various camps in Austria, mostly Gusen and Mauthausen.
