From what I have read you are correct on this David.
The relationship between France and Israel was not just based on Algeria though, it was also based upon the Suez crisis which I think was in 1956.
The combination of the two of course centered on a desire to thwart the growing power of Nasser in the Arab world.
Everyone agrees that Dimona owes itself to France. It was after that the two split apart and Israel was on its own in this regard.
