What we are perhaps seeing is two different factions backing two different horses. It might even be more complex than just two factions. Of course this take an already undemocratic process and makes it infinitely more undemocratic. Just another reason to never vote for one of the two wings of the American Business As Usual Party. And, another reason to realize that democratic participation is an ongoing job and NOT just something you 'do' once every one, two, or four years on election day - especially when that process is so greatly controlled and manipulated!
Sowing confusion (and thus taking control) via dichotomy is the name of the game and it never fails to work - despite its ancient pedigree, especially in America.
You would think people by now would see the pattern, but they don't. They don't want to. It's a collective thing - willingly overlooking one candidates criminal mores but not the other.
You have two presidential candidates who are facing criminal charges days before Americans vote one of them into office. Two presidential candidates who favour the 1% who will fuck over the 99%. And yet the 99% squabble and claw at each other to justify voting for their desired candidate
No wonder the world looks on with a combination of amusement and horror.
Intelligence and common sense has fled.
The shadow is a moral problem that challenges the whole ego-personality, for no one can become conscious of the shadow without considerable moral effort. To become conscious of it involves recognizing the dark aspects of the personality as present and real. This act is the essential condition for any kind of self-knowledge.
