Where it's possible a civilian or two could be very familiar with a range of firearms, particularly in Texas, it's altogether a different story to have them weigh in on their expertise some 200 feet away (a good point).
That said, since Mr. DiEugenio has initiated this interesting thread, the more we read and glean from the events at 10th & Patton, the more we experience/understand the widening gap between what we are being told happened as oppose to what really happened. Mr. Reech's input further illustrates that.
We may never ever know the actual truth, but it is encouraging that some critical-thinkers are examining this case in the new millennium.
One of my chief concerns is why would the decedent's best friend, Carl Amos Mather, seek immunity before testifying before the House Select Committee on Assassinations ---->
What are the odds that Mather--a CIA government contractor w/Collins Radio--would have a best friend (a JFK look-alike @ Tippit) killed on the same day as President Kennedy? There's more to what we have been told and what really unfolded at 10th & Patton, and the reasons Why.
What was Mather afraid of? Why did he feel compelled to seek immunity? What was Mather hiding? Did he help lure his best "friend" to his demise at 10th & Patton?

The Mather story is important and needs more investigation. But Tippit was not a JFK lookalike by any
stretch. Late pictures of him were suppressed by the WC and rarely circulated, but I have two in my book INTO THE NIGHTMARE,
and you can see some online, including autopsy photos; the WC volumes include only two pictures of Tippit,
from 1952 and 1957, probably to prevent more witnesses from commenting on his activities in 1963, but the earlier photos
don't resemble JFK either. And the idea that Tippit's body was switched for JFK's -- the point of this false theory -- is ludicrous and unsupported by any evidence.
