Mr. Dean: I have read much about you in "General Walker" by Dr. Caufield. You might even know him.
My one big question to you is "did the Mormon Church found the John Birch Society?" As you may have seen, my statistical factor analysis puts the John Birch Society with 5% loading which is higher than "LBJ-Hoover" (4%) and "military industrial complex". (4%) As I remember, Spartacus Educational says that the Mormon Church invented the JBS but most other sites vehemently deny it.
My own personal opinion is that we could do worse than having a Mormon in terms of religious affiliation. Their big advantage is that they were started here and don't have any conflict of interests vis a vis other countries or other parts of the world. They also, as I understand it, don't have a clergy that has financial interests to interfere in government. They have never tried to get in my bubble personally. Can't say that about others. Finally, I have read the story of Joseph Smith in Illinois and there seems to be a lot of genuine fervor and committment behind their beliefs. Unlike some others, they do get a lot of converts as I understand it. I could be wrong.
They did have a very bad experience in Illiinois back in the day however. Back in the 1840's they wanted the legal right to pass their own laws separate from the Illinois Legislature. Unfortunately for them, the evil Governor Ford (a fan of vigilante lynchings) turned against them. Not a good thing for them. The rest is history.
PS. They have a terrific geneology website FamilySearch which has been quite helpful to me personally.
