Aye Jan, something really important is being messed with.
Were I to hazard a guess I would say that the Collective Unconscious is being forcibly manipulated. My guess is that some of the 'knowledge' Hubbard received from the Thule Gesellschaft related to techniques of this manipulation.
Carl Jung and one or two of his closest colleagues used a technique he termed Active Imagination. Jung has never written about this by the way. But his dear friend and later Housekeeper (after his wife Emma died) Barbara Hannah, did write about it. But you'd be damn hard pressed to find out anything about it now.
This is not the place to go into detail about this, but suffice it to say that it utilized a relaxed state (a meditative state perhaps) to achieve a state of consciousness that could then access the Unconscious while remaining in a conscious state. The difference, and it is a very important difference, is that the person using this method remains conscious throughout.
L Ron Junior also speaks of his father's use of Magick (a Crowleyian spelling btw) and stresses the importance of this Magick inHubbard's system. And, futhermore, he explains that this Magick is combined with the application of pain, drugs S&M etc. because "Dad" was "in a hurry". This very clearly identifies the fact that Hubbard senior was on a "Will to Power" journey. Simply Google Jung and the words "will to power" and you can readily see what is meant by this term in a psychological sense.
Trevor Ravenscroft, in his book "Spear of Destiny" discussed the reasons for these in a hurry techniques of pain, drugs and S & M in regard to the Nazis and, in particular, the Thule Gesellschaft:
"indulgence in the most sadistic rituals awakened penetrating vision into the workings of Evil Intelligences and bestowed phenomenal magical powers."
Which I suppose sums up the Nazi's and L. Ron's motivations very clearly.
If I had to make a guess, I would guess that MKULTRA and the other programmes you mentioned were directed towards developing a technological/material approach to Crowley's and Hubbard's Magickal techniques.
That's just my guess of course. But I reckon it is a good 'un. :o
