My guess is that after getting a B.S. at the expense of the U.S. Army, he went on to get advanced degrees at the Army University and then to the Army's Medical School at Walter Reed--all at military's expense.
He was set to deploy to Afghanistan the day after the shooting and was going through the pre-deployment medical and paperwork when something happened. He stood up in the cubicle he was in while being interviewed, it is said, and began shooting.
I actually get our local news on the same TV stations that service the Fort Hood area. My aunt called and told me about the shooting two hours after the stations had begun broadcasting. At that time they were talking about 2, maybe 3 shooters, and advising everyone to stay inside because it was not knows what was happening and where potential shooters could be. Two others were arrested and never to my knowledge ever identified.
