The character played by Mel Gibson in Conspiracy Theory (1997) and that played by Will Smith in Enemy of the State (1998) are arresting for the truths they glimpse of which the ordinary populace are ignorant.
Certain realities exist below the feelies and soma holidays of the brave new world, yet we must remember that those whom the gods wish to destroy they will first make mad.
When I first read Lifton, I told our friend with service in military intelligence how it was outrageous that Liebeler so obstructed justice.
The reply gave me an eyeopening introduction to all the seeming Matrix-like existence where there is no descriptive "wet" for the fish swimming in it:
"We know the Liebelers. We had dinner with them. They're very nice people." This from one who described Kennedy as "very dangerous."
Plausible denial was written into statute shortly after the Truman-era creation of the C.I.A. in 1947.
Robert Wilcox posits that Patton was intentionally killed, partly for the latter's dangerous knowledge of some 25,000 Allied POWs sacrificed to the Soviets on some altar of realpolitik chicanery.
I would suggest that today is not the first appearance of masters of evil illusion and manipulation, that Sun Tsu was advising warlords on the practice over two millenia ago.
We have been in that Twilight Zone postulated by Huxley and Orwell-Blair, and must find our way through its deadly labyrinth.
For the religious, there is no ultimate earthly victory over evil. And as John Kennedy advised us, on Earth God's work must truly be our own.
For the nonreligious, the battle may be ethical (too philosophical?) or populist (e.g., Long March), yet that end may be a Great Firewall of China barring access to freedom.
We are not a spark of life in the universe to be some hive's worker.
Even the philosopher allowed that we are a thinking reed.
Madness may be a means of escape, but the work remains.
