Seriously, the intent of the rumor-spreading was to damage your reputation and your bona fides as a teacher, writer, and researcher. It also was a direct attempt to wreak havoc on your ability to earn a living.
Also, the timing of this libel is of keen relevance.
IMMEDIATELY TAKE SCREEN CAPTURES OF THE ACCUSATIONS, INCLUDING THOSE MADE IN PRIVATE E-MAILS.
But by all means do NOT take my word on any of this. Get yourself a good barrister, or solicitor, or whatever in hell they produce at the Inns of Court.
