In many ways it is all surreal, then and today. The truth is difficult to reckon with for a lot of folks.

Regarding LSD, recall Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters, how Tom Wolfe held them at arm's length, of course he wouldn't take the drug--it would tarnish his vaunted objectivity, yet the impression was left that there was nothing substantial here, all sweetness and light, no darkside potential.
Marks' Search for the Manchurian Candidate presents a CIA pooh-poohing that much was accomplished, and of course we were assured by Gottlieb it was closed in 1973, parking lot emptied.
