I am learning an enormous amount about pulling back from the guns to the men of power far removed.
Charles' recurrent allusions to levels or tiers of sponsorship and facilitator provides the perspective.
Zirbel, McClellan, Caro and others have addressed the agency of Johnson. Mark North and Tony Summers have looked at Hoover. Dulles and Angleton have been delved somewhat.
I had been getting the feeling so many had been playing the Blind Men and the Elephant game, wherein each appendage was described—perhaps each was held to be the cerebral cortex.
Even the elephant droppings, the report of the Warren Commission, the Clarke Panel, the HSCA, the so-wonderful fairy tales of Posner, Bugliosi et al have been treated as holy relics.
James Douglass cited Kennedy, having just read Seven Days in May, responding to a question, could it happen in America.
He replied in the affirmative, if a president had a Bay of Pigs, then compounded that error with another and another.
Douglass posits no fewer than five by my count: Bay of Pigs, missile crisis, atomic test ban, American University speech, NSAM 263 withdrawing from Vietnam, detente with Khruschev, demarche with Castro. More than three? Than five?
And though Zirbel asks, cui bono, for whose benefit, let us address who resented, who was threatened.
In my view, many name the Pentagon generals, LeMay, Lansdale and others; they wanted a nuclear preemption, a strongly forward prosecution of the Cold War.
CIA. Kennedy fired Dulles, Cabell, vowed to shatter it into a thousand pieces and scatter it to the winds. NSAM 55 sought to put it back within statutory parameters.
Was it not closest to these that the prime motivation arose? Are they not central to those who make it their destiny to decide who governs and who profits.
Johnson was the quintessential ambitious and unscrupulous politician and the heir apparent to the coup. He stood to be removed from the ticket and face jail over the Bobby Baker and Billy Sol Estes scandals. He would be a willing handmaiden.
Hoover was Johnson's neighbor and friend, loathed the Kennedys, was friendly with organized crime, vehemently anticommunist, stood to be retired January 1, 1965. He, too, would be a willing accessory.
Would Dulles be high in the ranks of those carrying out the coup. And Angleton had had Oswald tracked for years per John Newman.
Oswald was a doubled agent since age twelve per John Armstrong. Oswald was the designated patsy.
Ruby had to silence Oswald. Ruby was in business with and under orders from organized crime.
Marcello had been deported by Robert. He would be a willing accessory. Giancana and Nicolletti and Roselli—all of these were involved in the Cuban Castro attempts, and bore a grudge against the dangerous younger Kennedy. They would be willing accessories.
But who would order the body hijacked and returned to Washington, manipulate the autopsy and its photographic and x-ray record, who would manipulate the official investigations, who would sabotage the Garrison trial, and purge the Archives to this day.
Only the greatest possible confluence of official power could accomplish all of this.
I often return to the pathetic end of the so-powerful noble Senators and the People of Dallas, SPQR.
Johnson March 1968 “I will not seek” downed by Cronkite the intelligence busboy; King April 1968 down with a CIA operative at his elbow; June 1968, RFK (who Waldron-Hartmann make omnipotent) down by an MK-ULTRA second gun; then the triumph of the bottlers convention and all of that “Bay of Pigs” stuff—downed by a CIA sabotage of the Watergate fiasco.
Hoover heart attack 1972; Johnson Heart attack 1973; Nixon “effective noon tomorrow” 1974; Ford “base of the back of the bottom of the foot of the nape of the edge of the neck” gone in the 1976 electoral victory of Mr. Clean Peanut whose Turner trick or treated the Agency Halloween 1977 by 820 case officers.
Somebody had been replacing governments globally before Johnson was stuffing box 13.
Now it was written by the playwrights on the nicely available score of Johnson's vice presidency, Connally's Texas, Cabell's Dallas, Ruby in Dallas, Byrd's Depository and Zapruder's film, and Dealey's Plaza, and Welcome to Dallas.
And someone worked real hard to provide the botched Mexico City veil (of the Seven Veils) to go with the Castro veil and the Soviet veil, and the Mob veil, and the Johnson veil, and the Secret Service veil, and the Hoover-FBI veil, and the oil men veil.
But the tail didn't wag the elephant.
In Utah a gigantic NSA to balance Ft. Meade's behemoth. It dispatched the 35th president and its prime directive is what. What is served by unlimited power.
Or whom. The whom did it.
