I can't tell you how shocked I was 20 years ago when I saw my first tattoo by choice on a Jewish man. Many of the people I knew growing up had these tattoos and most had had them removed. I had never seen any other kind. But my neighbour was from Israel and his parents were Iraqi and Yemeni and had no history of this unlike all the Ashkenazis I grew up around. I've seen many tattoos on young Israelis since but it still gives me the creeps. Especially knowing how most of the tattoo parlors are run by neo nazi types around here at least.
