Consciente de la carga que tiene para el país el movimiento creado en 1970 por el abogado Pablo Rodríguez Grez, el periodista Manuel Fuentes Wendling acaba de publicar sus Memorias secretas de Patria y Libertad (Grijalbo, 1999), con abundante información sobre el grupo de extrema derecha, que él integró en calidad de secretario general de Propaganda.

Mientras para algunos Patria y Libertad era un grupo de jóvenes -mayoritariamente del barrio alto- que en jeans, camisa blanca y zapatillas salió a las calles a combatir el marxismo, premunidos con nunchacos y bombas molotov; para otros se trató simplemente de una asociación sediciosa y terrorista.

Entre los personajes que aparecen mencionados en el libro como cercanos al movimiento están Enrique Campos Menéndez, Jaime Guzmán -quien se hizo cargo del frente juvenil en sus inicios, pero se alejó cuando el grupo adoptó políticas paramilitares-, María Olivia Gazmuri y el empresario Roberto Thieme.
