Earlier in this thread I noted the line in the Daily Telegraph about Gareth Williams that: "The 31-year-old was seconded from GCHQ to work on top-secret systems to defend British banks and transport infrastructure from cyber attack and to eavesdrop on terrorist communications."
I don't consider it much of a leap to suppose that Williams may have learnt, and even been given access to, instances of money laundering - either by criminal structures or for British/American national security purposes.
Here, in the Murdoch-owned Sun's version, is a more detailed account of the territory that Carroll and Coutts were involved in.
It's self-interested, claiming the paper's own proprietors were "targeted", but still a glimpse of sorts behind the veil:

If supersmart young cyberspook Gareth Williams tapped into this tangled web, was confronted by evidence of immoral and nefarious actions sanctioned by top politicians and/or his intelligence agency employers, and had the strength of character to decide to expose such immorality, then MI6 had a big problem.
Despatching PC Plod from Scotland Yard to "discover" an MI6 corpse decomposing in a North Face bag in a New Rodina bath in an MI6 safe house is pretty embarrassing for SIS.
It suggests panic, and loss of control of events.
However, exposure of immoral and illegal operations conducted through secret financial channels at the heart of the British banking establishment, perhaps in direct collusion with overtly criminal organisations, would be much more embarrassing.
Maybe terminally so for certain prominent figures....
