The loyalty of MP's to the Party over and above their loyalty to their Constituents is one of the principal problems of the current model of democratic representation. It is loaded in favour of the Party in power and thus makes the government an "elective dictatorship" -- in the words of Lord Hailsham former Master of the Rolls.

And unless or until this changes so that Members of Parliament are only answerable to their Constituents, Blighty will continue to be run by cabals of power and influence.
