Quote:Tear Down This Myth: The Cry For Freedom In Our Time
Dean Hartwell, author of "Dead Men Talking: Consequences of Government Lies," "Truth Matters: How the Voters Can Take Back Their Nation" and, "Planes without Passengers: the Faked Hijackings of 9/11," writes:
Most people believe the myth that Osama bin Laden planned and orchestrated the attacks of 9/11. Stating and re-stating this untruth has become a convenient way for our leaders to steer the public away from the real perpetrators of the crimes of that day and for continuing an unending battle called the "War on Terror."
Relative to the importance of the myth in creating the gestalt of 9/11, consider the following. Philip Zelikow, Condi Rice's buddy and joined-at-the-hip partner in crime, had a very interesting speciality during his Harvard pursuit of his PhD. It was in the creation and maintenance of public myths. You will recall Mr. Zelikow as the Executive Director of the Commission, and the person who controlled the Commission staff, and who wrote the outline of the findings before the Commission convened. The "Independent and nonpartisan" executive director - who was the most (perhaps the only) influential part of the commission, and who was a part of George W. Bush's transition team. That guy. Can't imagine how the Commission concluded that the network bobbleheads got it exactly right even before the towers became smoking rubble.
This is extremely relevant to our efforts to shake off the false mythology of 9/11 that was seemingly surgically inserted into the spellbound and gape-jawed faces of the American people on Sept. 11, 2001. It was scripted, and dozens of talking heads of all stripes were poised and eager to start spinning it, even before the towers started their "Las Vegas Dive" into their own basements. Bin Laden had been primed as the over-arching boogieman in 1993 on the same patch of real estate. Mr. Spitzer and Mr. Cherthoff went to great lengths to connect the blind sheik to Bin Laden, and the bombing in '93 connected Bin Laden and WTC Attack in the minds of those who paid attention. But there was not enough carnage and blood to hold our attention. This time, with thousands dead or in peril, Bin Laden was on everyone's lips within minutes of the second aircraft strike, and the myth grew and took root.
9/11 was by no means the first time a myth had been created around a very public event of great import. The death of President Kennedy on Nov. 22, 1963 was subject to the same process of identifying a "patsie" - Lee Oswald then, 19 hijackers in 2001, and spinning what has become almost a liturgy of assassination myths around him - The mythical Lone Gunman. This worked so well in that case that they tried it again twice in 1968 with Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King.
Even today, when we have so many good, non-mythical accounts of the murder of JFK, (the best of which, is in my opinion, hands down, Jim Douglass' "JFK and the Unspeakable - Why He Died and Why It Matters") there is still an industry around writing false accounts of Dallas, 1963 that blithly disregards the findings of the Select Committee on Assassinations who concluded that there was a conspiracy around Kennedy's death and more than one gunman. There is even a "museum" dedicated to preservation of the official myth in Dallas - the School Book Depository at Dealey Plaza where only materials reinforcing the official myth need apply. It's staffed by a former investigator, Gary Macke, who allegedly sought the truth about the assassination, but who, as he candidly admitted to Jesse Ventura, took this job as curator and had to preserve and protect the myth as part of his job description. He knows he is peddling bullshit but - hey, it's a living! As long as there is Vince Bugliosi and the History Channel, the myth will continue to be reinforced.
Such is the power of myth. Do not disregard it. It carried the Greek and Roman Gods into the 21st century, but now it does more prosaic and much dirtier work.
